Photo&#8217;s:<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sacshockey\/?hl=en\">SACS Hockey<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jontythomas88\/?hl=en\">Jonty Thomas<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For many years, <strong>South African College High School (SACS)<\/strong> considered their hockey rivals to be the traditional southern suburbs&#8217; schools, <strong>Wynberg Boys&#8217; High<\/strong>, <strong>Bishops<\/strong>, and <strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, that has drastically changed over the past four years because of their newfound rivalry with<strong> Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, don&#8217;t get me wrong, fixtures against the southern suburbs&#8217; schools still get the respect they deserve, but the hype and buzz is through the roof when PRG comes to town or SACS travels to Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n<p>This week will be no different when the two schoolboy hockey giants square off in a <strong>Hyundai Friday Nite Lights<\/strong> game at the <strong>Maties AstroTurf<\/strong>, in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n<p>The massive match will be broadcast <strong>LIVE<\/strong> on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/supersportschools.com\/\">SuperSport Schools App<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>DSTV Channel 216<\/strong>, and the<strong> SABC Plus App<\/strong>. Pushback is at<strong> 19:45<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of our extensive coverage, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong> hockey writer Avuyile Sawula takes a look at five key talking points you should know about ahead of the crunch clash.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The coaches&#8217; battle: Baker vs Holmes\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Culture vs Tactics<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One of the most interesting aspects of this match will be the battle between the coaches, <strong>Michael Baker (PRG) <\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <strong>Sam Holmes (SACS)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They have a different style of coaching, but both get the best out of their teams, week in and out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his first-ever interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Baker described himself as &#8220;a coach who believes in building culture&#8221;,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">while the calm and relaxed Holmes has been labelled a &#8220;mastermind tactician&#8221; by some of his players. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While the rivalry is between the schools, it&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> important to note,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as well,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that we&#8217;re experiencing the teams to be a reflection of their coaches<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Since arriving at PRG at the start of 2024, Baker has faced Holmes more than any other coach in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hockey Semi-Final - SACS vs Paul Roos - Hibbert Shield - 2 May 2025\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YVJazNWnOXk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To date, their teams have played against each other four times, and two of those were at the <strong>Hibbert Shield<\/strong>, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the other two took place in the Western Cape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SACS has won two of the four meetings, with PRG claiming victory once, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the other ended in a pulsating <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/all-square-as-paul-roos-vs-sacs-decider-ends-in-a-stalemate\/\">2-2 draw<\/a> <\/strong>last <\/span>year, in July. The last meeting between the sides was a nail-biter, won by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sacs-to-tackle-paarl-gim-in-hibbert-shield-final\/\">SACS 5-4 on penalties after their semi-final clash at the Hibbert Shield, in May, ended 3-3<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will it be the culture cultivated by Baker that <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">will triumph<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">or<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will the SACS boys successfully put to work the tactics shared by <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Holmes?<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73641\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73641\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-73641\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/494815758_700810645730200_2817853178829346547_n-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Litha Kraai will look to bring his A-game for SACS against Paul Roos. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100089898161073\">Irma Ferreira SPORT &amp; EVENT photography<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Discipline will be crucial<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The fewer cards, the better<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When we previewed the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/tied-at-1-1-its-time-for-paul-roos-and-sacs-to-settle-the-top-team-debate\/\">Paul Roos vs. SACS clash last year in July<\/a><\/strong>, one of the things we mentioned was the importance of discipline from both teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It turned out that the discipline in that high-takes clash was awful, to say the least. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both sides were reckless in their tackles, they <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">talked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> back to the umpires on numerous occasions, and, as a result, yellow <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and red cards were dished out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PRG <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was forced<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to play the majority of the clash with a man down after <strong>Louan Van Zyl <\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was given <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his marching orders early on. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/player-feature-reece-theunis-sacs\/\">Reece Theunis<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/video-interview-litha-kraai\/\">Litha Kraai<\/a><\/strong>, of SACS, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were also shown<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> cards. It was messy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After the game,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/all-square-as-paul-roos-vs-sacs-decider-ends-in-a-stalemate\/\">both coaches lamented the poor discipline<\/a><\/strong> that had cost their sides an opportunity to secure a win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This year will be no different. The stakes will be high. There will be electricity in the air. Discipline will be one of the most <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">important<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> aspects of the game. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cool, calm and relaxed heads will be needed, especially with PRG&#8217;s home supporters sure to be make their presence known<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Physicality levels will, also, be high, which was evident in the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hibbert Shield semifinal. Both sides will need to be careful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a neutral, I would love to see a tightly contested clash <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">where the treatment of umpires is of a high <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">standard,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> especially after the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/lets-fix-this-hockey-problem-together\/\">South African Hockey Association (SAHA) released a memorandum<\/a><\/strong> about the problem of the mistreatment of officials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It will be a heated <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">clash. That&#8217;s for sure. B<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ut<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> both coaching groups will need to preach the importance of discipline all week long. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/janco__photography\/?hl=en\">Janco Saunders<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Players must step up\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Time to prove a point<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Instagram posts, WhatsApp stories, and motivational quotes will mean <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very little<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the minute the teams make contact with the AstroTurf on Friday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All that will matter for the players is showing up, balling out, and putting their best foot forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Big games <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are made<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for big players, and each side will need their leading stars to bring their A-game from the get-go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For the home side, their defence will be key, and at the back, <strong>Tylor Carter<\/strong> will <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be tested,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">so<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> he&#8217;ll need to exert his influence.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Carter, along with <strong>Jeandre Van Zyl<\/strong> and <strong>Danesh Titus<\/strong>, has steered the PRG ship well this season, but SACS poses a different challenge to any other team Paul Roos has faced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another player who needs to step to the fore is Paul Roos skipper <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/swanepoel-joins-rare-paul-roos-century-club-at-hibbert-shield\/\">Christo Swanepoel<\/a><\/strong>. He&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">played a massive role as the midfield maestro for his side, and he&#8217;ll be aiming to boss proceedings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Up front, <strong>Matthew Cardoza<\/strong>, <strong>Caleb Cilliers<\/strong>, <strong>Callum van Oudtshoorn<\/strong> and the reliable <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reuben Gouws will key the PRG attack. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For SACS, many are expecting, rightfully, Litha Kraai to lead their challenge. But Reece Theunis is a dangerous player who will also want to prove a point against a quality side. He has\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been deadly in front of goal this season and he&#8217;ll be keen to take the form he has shown against others into the showdown with PRG.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Mohlodi Maseko<\/strong> is another player who has sparkled for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SACS.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The little magician has enjoyed a great start to his first-team career, and he&#8217;ll want to keep up his playmaking against a well-drilled unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SACS has had to make a change at goalkeeper, with their first-choice, <strong>Ethan October<\/strong>, ruled out of the contest after sustaining an injury in their 9-1 win over <strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With October sidelined, <strong>Lorenzo Virisimo<\/strong> took over in the goalbox in their 10-0 win over <strong>DF Malan <\/strong>last time out. Photo: Janco Saunders<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Set-piece accuracy will be key<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Shorty\u2026..&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While fans at the ground would love to see a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">flurry<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of field <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">goals,<\/span>\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the reality is that set <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">pieces<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will play a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> role in the clash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The modern game has evolved in a way that teams rely on set-piece opportunities to make the difference in tight contests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both PRG and SACS have, however, scored most of their goals this season from open play, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that doesn&#8217;t mean they don\u2019t value short corners or spend hours trying to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">perfect drag<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> flicks or <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">cook up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> variations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SACS has three flickers in Kraai, Theunis, and skipper <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Jo le Roux<\/strong>. All are tried and tested \u2013 and they&#8217;ll be ready to fire on Friday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PRG, meanwhile, is still trying to find its groove at PC time. They were blessed with <strong>Reuben Sendzul<\/strong> as their specialist flicker in 2024. This year, in his absence, they&#8217;ve taken on more <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">variations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Those variations have worked well, but they also have, in <strong>Reuben Gouws<\/strong>, someone who can score by going the direct drag flick route. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73644\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73644\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-73644\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SACS-v-Bishops-2-3-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"The SACS team for 2025 lined up. Their meetings have been nail-biters.<\/p>\n<p>Are they among the best three teams in the country? According to statistics, yes, and by statistics I don&#8217;t mean the controversial rankings that spark debates in school corridors and staffrooms.<\/p>\n<p>These sides have proven time and again that they deserve all the hype they receive, and that&#8217;s because of everything they&#8217;ve done on the turf.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the rankings will be a massive talking point this week, but they will mean little once the umpire&#8217;s whistle signals the start of play on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>This article is titled: &#8220;The Battle for Schoolboy Hockey Supremacy&#8221; because the team that wins this one will have the upper hand heading into their second meeting in term three.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no place to hide ladies, and gentlemen.
