Photo. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1112887890870984&amp;set=pcb.1112893037537136\">Maritzburg College on Facebook<\/a><\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the mid-year exams looming, football action around the country is winding down, with several schools in the Eastern Cape, Free State, and Gauteng having played their last matches for the first half of the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siya Pongco<\/strong> rounds up recent action in the<strong> East London High Schools Football League,<\/strong>\u00a0the <strong>Magnificent Wednesday Schools Football League,<\/strong> the <strong>Mangaung Schools Football League,<\/strong> as well as various derbies and friendly matches.<\/p>\n<p><strong>B-Block BWFLA High Schools Soccer League (East London)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fixtures for the East London High Schools Soccer League will be put on hold during the forthcoming examination period, which meant that only match was played last week, with <strong>Dale College<\/strong> claiming a victory after a series of defeats.<\/p>\n<p>Dale headed into their clash with Westbank High in mid-table, below their usual lofty status, but they pulled off a hard-fought and morale-boosting 2-1 win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magnificent Wednesday Schools Football League\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, in the Magnificent Wednesday Schools Football League, <strong>Virginia High School<\/strong> and <strong>Harmony High School<\/strong>, in circuit nine, produced exceptional performances, but <strong>Reatlehile Secondary School<\/strong>, unfortunately, failed to appear for their match against <strong>St Anne&#8217;s Technical High.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Virginia High, who went into their match in second place in the standings, one point behind St Anne&#8217;s, powered their way to a resounding 6-1 victory over <strong>Meloding Secondary School<\/strong>. St Anne&#8217;s, meanwhile, was awarded a 2-0 walkover win over Reatlehile, which kept them ahead of the <strong>Absa <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/absa-wildeklawer-has-a-new-champion-virginia-high-school\/\">Wildeklawer champion<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In a second meeting between the teams, Harmony High defeated <strong>Marematlou Secondary School<\/strong> 2-0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mangaung Schools Football League\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Free State&#8217;s Mangaung Schools Football League, there was limited activity on Friday, but some teams were able to catch up on fixtures that had been scheduled for earlier in the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Petunia Secondary School<\/strong> rolled to a 4-2 win over <strong>Kagisho Secondary School,<\/strong> while <strong>HTS Louis Botha<\/strong> recorded a 2-0 win over <strong>Sand du Plessis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In a high-scoring contest, <strong>Kyrios Independent School<\/strong> picked up a 5-3 victory over <strong>Bainsvlei Combined School.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenges, Derbies and Reunion fixtures<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74205\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74205 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Bafana_Bafana_Technical-Team_Grey_College-400x348.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"348\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left to right: Vincent Tseka (Team Manager), Monde Hlatshwayo (Director of Football, Grey College), Hugo Broos (Bafana Bafana Head Coach), Braam van Wyk (Headmaster, Grey College), and Helman Mkhalele (Bafana Bafana Assistant Coach). Photo. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=736759785348305&amp;set=a.228474959510126\">Grey College on Facebook<\/a><\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Saturday, <strong>Grey College<\/strong> welcomed East London&#8217;s <strong>Selborne College<\/strong> for matches in squash, rugby, hockey, and football.<\/p>\n<p>On the football field, Grey decisively defeated Selborne 4-1.<\/p>\n<p>Renowned in South African schools&#8217; football, Grey College showcased their exceptional skills to continue a strong season which has seen them excel in the Mangaung Schools Football League and secure a place in the final 16 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/shootouts-big-scores-and-all-out-action-in-the-curro-halala-cup\/\"><strong>Curro Halala Cup. <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Grey College had the honour of hosting the <strong>Bafana Bafana<\/strong> technical team, including the national team coach <strong>Hugo Broos<\/strong>, which surely provided Grey with a good boost ahead of their showdown with Selborne.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, <strong>Maritzburg College<\/strong>, celebrating the school&#8217;s Reunion Weekend, faced the challenge of an Old Boys&#8217; team.
