Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TeamphotoSA\">TeamPhotoSA<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When the <strong>Western Province (WP) u18A<\/strong> side of 2019 won the <strong>SASHOC Inter-Provincial Tournament<\/strong>, they did it on the famous <strong>Pape&#8217;s AstroTurf<\/strong> at<strong> Maritzburg College<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Province boys dominated Pool B, finishing atop the standings, before edging out <strong>KZN Coastal A<\/strong> 3-2 in the semifinals to set up a title decider against <strong>KZN Inland A<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a close and heated contest, they defeated Inland A 3-2. That triumph was the start of something special for the men in blue and white.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since winning in 2019, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Province<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has successfully defended the title three times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They will enter this year&#8217;s tournament, set to once again be hosted on Pape&#8217;s Astro at <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maritzburg College, in search of the inter-provincial crown for a fifth straight time. When their run of unbroken success began six years earlier, none of the 2025 team&#8217;s players was yet in high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It may sound like a fairytale, but the Western Province boys will feel, given the venue for the tournament, as if the stars are aligning for them as they seek to extend their dominance of South African schoolboy hockey. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The tournament runs <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">from <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">30<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> June <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to 5<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> July,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the WP selectors have named a star-studded outfit to be coached by the experienced <strong>Jody Erasmus<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Erasmus, who has been part of the winning <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">train<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sacs-shows-class-to-get-one-over-paul-roos-in-epic-cape-derby\/\">South African College High School (SACS)<\/a><\/strong>,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">takes over the coaching reins from <strong>Bryce West<\/strong>, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will serve as an <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">assistant to both the WP u18A<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and u18B sides, and as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the technical director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">West offers a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wealth of experience after leading <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Province to glory in last year&#8217;s tournament in Bloemfontein, which they won after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/western-province-claims-back-to-back-sashoc-national-week-titles\/\">defeating Boland A 3-2<\/a><\/strong> in the final.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Six players who were part of that winning effort return to the squad. Four of them are from SACS: captain <strong>Jo le Roux<\/strong>, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/theunis-stars-for-sacs-vs-bishops-bosch-and-fairmont-dominate\/\">Reece Theunis<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Aiden Hughes<\/strong>, and the dangerous <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/we-are-proud-kraai-family-jubilant-as-litha-reaches-100-caps-for-sacs\/\">Litha Kraai<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Joe Gitlin, <\/strong>from <strong>Reddam House <\/strong><\/span><strong>Constantia,<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <strong>Wynberg Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> captain, <strong>Zach Gibbon<\/strong>, have also cracked the nod again.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50788\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50788\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/DSC_9533-b-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"The Western Province u18A team celebrating their SASHOC National Week win. Photo: <strong>TeamPhotoSA<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Those returning players have, not surprisingly, been making their mark this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The four SACS boys have been ripping it up. <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Roux and Hughes have matured well over the year, while <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kraai and Theunis have taken their games to the next level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gitlin has been Reddam&#8217;s standout performer in a very good season for the school, while Gibbon remains a difficult problem to solve for any opposition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Other SACS representatives include <\/span><strong>Matthew Lassen<\/strong> and <strong>Zach Redfern<\/strong>, who both played for the WP u18B side last year. <strong>Mohlodi Maseko<\/strong>, who represented the u16A team in 2024, has been promoted straight to the senior side.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> is represented by <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Daniel Fisher<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joshua Beattie<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thomas Gordon. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Aiden Topper,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from <strong>El Shaddai Christian School<\/strong>, who ran out for the Province u18B team in 2024, makes the step up to the u18A side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WP has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been drawn in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the pool of death, Pool A.
