Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/StAndrewsCollegeMakhanda\/photos_by\">St Andrew&#8217;s College Media Team<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The small town of Makhanda, formerly known as Grahamstown, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">will come to a standstill this weekend when <strong>Kingswood College<\/strong> hosts <strong>St Andrew&#8217;s College <\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <strong>The Diocesan School for Girls (DSG)<\/strong> in the annual K-Day derby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In fact, it&#8217;s a five-day sporting extravaganza that sees the three schools compete against each other in hockey, squash, netball, rugby, chess, golf, music, and the arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The campuses will be buzzing with activity, and among the most highly anticipated events will be the first team hockey fixtures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The boys&#8217; clash between St Andrew&#8217;s and Kingswood takes place <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on Thursday, 12 June, at 17:15. The girls&#8217; sides meet <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on Saturday at 13:15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ahead of those clashes, we take a look at the teams&#8217; current form, past results, and what they&#8217;ll need to do to get one over on their fierce rivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74953\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74953\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74953\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Kingswood-vs-SAC-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Kingswood will want to cause an upset against St Andrew's College on K-Day. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KingswoodCollegeGrahamstown\/photos_by\">Kingswood College Media Team<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">St Andrew&#8217;s vs Kingswood<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">St Andrew&#8217;s enters the derby as the favourites to win it, and some would suggest they should win comfortably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The side, led by coaches <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Dean Ferreira<\/strong> and<strong> Reece Buchan<\/strong>, has enjoyed a stellar season, despite some disappointing results in May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their last outing resulted in a 7-0 whipping of <strong>Cambridge High <\/strong>in East London. <strong>Luke Mason<\/strong> scored a brace in that clash, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the other goals <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were netted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by <strong>Daniel Meihuizen<\/strong>, <strong>Sid Fishlock<\/strong>, <strong>Greg Rodwell<\/strong>, <strong>Angus Glen<\/strong> and the skipper, <strong>Connor McNamara<\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before that win, St Andrew&#8217;s suffered narrow losses against <strong>Grey High <\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <strong>Selborne College<\/strong> &#8211; both ended 0-1 in favour of their opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coach Ferreira&#8217;s players are focusing on what&#8217;s in front of them, however, and they&#8217;re excited to be a part of the big clash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;K-Day is always a great occasion and something the players look forward to every year, so there&#8217;s some extra excitement around the fixture,\u201d he told<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\"> SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We are approaching it like any other game, and I would describe the team atmosphere as positive and exciting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Of course, there is a sense of tradition and pride around K-Day, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it&#8217;s just another opportunity for the team to play the sport they love together.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Securing a win <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">away from home won&#8217;t be easy for St Andrew&#8217;s, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> take on a Kingswood outfit <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> put together a pretty decent run in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Led by <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">coach<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> Jos\u00e9 Smith<\/strong>, the boys in red\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and black have been consistent, losing only six of their 24 matches<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the Eastern Province region, they\u2019ve beaten <strong>Pearson High<\/strong>, <strong>Westering High<\/strong>, and <strong>Victoria Park High<\/strong>, but they were well beaten by Grey High, going down 0-4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite his side being favoured to win, coach Ferreira said they won&#8217;t underestimate their rivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Kingswood have proven that they are a capable team this season, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> we expect them to bring plenty of intensity and energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Our goal will be to stay composed throughout the match, make good decisions with and without the ball, and avoid the frantic, emotional hockey that is typical of derbies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">St Andrew&#8217;s recorded a 2-0 win on K-Day last year, and they&#8217;ll be eager to keep their winning record against Kingswood intact.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74954\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74954\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Abigail-Holderness-for-DSG-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"DSG captain Abigail Holderness will play a massive role for her side against Kingswood College on K-Day. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100063566859973\">DSG Makhanda.<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DSG Makhanda vs Kingswood<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There is no doubt that the Kingswood first-team girls&#8217; side faces their toughest match of the season when they take on <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DSG.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That&#8217;s because their opponents are in scorching-hot form. They&#8217;ve played some outstanding hockey, resulting in a flowing, free-scoring game, which has seen them stack win after win against opponents within and outside of the province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Late last month, DSG laid claim to being the best team in the Eastern Cape after<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/dsg-are-the-queens-of-the-eastern-cape-after-conquering-collegiate\/\"> outplaying Collegiate Girls&#8217; High 4-1 in Gqeberha<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following that clash, they put on a masterclass and recorded a stunning result against <strong>Cambridge High School<\/strong>, powering their way to a jaw-dropping 22-0 victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On K-Day, they&#8217;ll face a Kingswood College team that has struggled to find form and consistency in 2025. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To date, they\u2019ve played 23 matches, suffered 12 losses, and won nine matches. The last time they took on DSG, in a pre-season friendly, DSG cruised to a 7-0 win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kingswood has gone down in their past two outings, but by a single goal only on both occasions, losing 0-1 to <strong>Union High<\/strong> and 1-2 to Pearson High.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coach Jason Maclachlan will have faith that his girls can pull off a massive upset on derby day.
