When the Northern Gauteng u18A<\/strong> <\/span>girls’<\/span> team arrived at last <\/span>year’s<\/span> SASHOC National Week<\/strong> in Bloemfontein, few expected them to make waves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They were not considered to be among the <\/span>favourites. T<\/span>hey <\/span>were overlooked<\/span>, and perhaps that<\/span> “<\/span>underdogs”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>tag played to their advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the guidance of coaches <\/span>Sinoxolo “Essex” Mbekeni<\/strong>\u00a0and Suzanne Strydom<\/strong>, the highveld outfit surprised <\/span>and edged out KZN Inland A 3-2 on penalties <\/a><\/strong>to secure a place in the final.<\/span><\/p>\n

They faced off against their cross-Jukskei rivals Southern Gauteng A<\/strong> in the title-deciding clash. A fiercely contested match finished 2-2, but Southerns claimed the title 4-3 on penalties<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Northerns just missed out on gold, but they made their mark during that campaign. Now, in 2025, they’ll be aiming to go one step <\/span>further.<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>year’s<\/span> tournament will be hosted<\/span> at St <\/strong><\/span>Anne’s<\/strong> DSG<\/strong>, in Hilton, and runs <\/span>from 30 June to 5 July<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There will be continuity on the leadership front, with coach Essex returning. He’ll <\/span>be assisted by Kriekie Van Wyk<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 16-strong squad includes players from <\/span>Curro Hazeldean<\/strong>, Ho\u00ebrskool Garsfontein<\/strong>, Waterkloof<\/strong>, Menlopark<\/strong>, Affies Meisieskool<\/strong>, Pretoria High School for Girls<\/strong>, CBC Mount Edmund<\/strong>, and Midstream College<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is, though, a new-look team, with only <\/span>Andrea Groenewald <\/strong><\/span>and Okuhle Ntshaba <\/strong>remaining from the 2024 lineup. <\/span>Despite having to work with a much younger side, coach Mbekeni said <\/span>he’s<\/span> excited to see what his girls can produce.<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span><\/strong>I<\/span>t’s<\/span> very exciting to be coaching the Northerns u18A girls’ side again,”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he told SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>I<\/span>t’s<\/span> always a great challenge to compete at a national level.\u00a0 <\/span>It’s<\/span> a very different side to last year, <\/span>but<\/span> it’s<\/span> always exciting to work with different players and try to get the best out of them<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Schoolgirls’<\/span> hockey in Pretoria has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons, making selection for national tournaments more challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n

While trying to pick the best possible side, the selectors have looked <\/span>at<\/span> combinations, strengths, and the X-factor.<\/span> Essex feels <\/span>the Northerns’ squad possesses <\/span>a good blend of those traits.<\/span><\/p>\n

“S<\/span>election is always difficult for Northerns,”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he acknowledged. “<\/span>W<\/span>e are blessed to have <\/span>very good<\/span> players across the region and a wide variety to choose from, <\/span>and<\/span> it’s<\/span> always tough. However, I feel we’re <\/span>rewarding players that have done well throughout the year<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on narrowly missing out on gold in 2024 in Bloemfontein, coach Essex admitted coming so close only to be tripped up at the final hurdle after a penalty shootout still hurts. This year, though, he recognises the challenge will be different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>I<\/span>t\u2019s<\/span> still a bitter pill for us to swallow,” he said, “b<\/span>ut this is a new year and a different tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

“W<\/span>e first need to work on qualifying for the semi-finals before looking at the final or winning the tournament<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Northerns will aim to emulate their free-flowing playing style from 2024. <\/span>They’ll<\/span> be captained<\/span> by Mia Pretorius<\/strong>, who will <\/span>be assisted<\/span> by Andrea Groenewald and <\/span>Lisa-Marie<\/strong> Grey<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

They kick off their campaign against Border A<\/strong> on Monday, 30 June, at 13:10.<\/span><\/p>\n
