Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TeamphotoSA\">TeamPhotoSA<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When the <strong>Northern Gauteng u18A<\/strong> <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">girls&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> team arrived at last <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">year&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> SASHOC National Week<\/strong> in Bloemfontein, few expected them to make waves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They were not considered to be among the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">favourites. T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hey <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were overlooked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and perhaps that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">underdogs&#8221;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">tag played to their advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Under the guidance of coaches <\/span><strong>Sinoxolo &#8220;Essex&#8221; Mbekeni<\/strong>\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <strong>Suzanne Strydom<\/strong>, the highveld outfit surprised <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and edged out <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/northern-gauteng-as-cinderella-story-continues\/\">KZN Inland A 3-2 on penalties <\/a><\/strong>to secure a place in the final.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They faced off against their cross-Jukskei rivals <strong>Southern Gauteng A<\/strong> in the title-deciding clash. A fiercely contested match finished 2-2, but Southerns claimed the title <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/phume-and-dutton-shine-as-southerns-are-crowned-u18-champions\/\">4-3 on penalties<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Northerns just missed out on gold, but they made their mark during that campaign. Now, in 2025, they&#8217;ll be aiming to go one step <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">year&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> tournament will be hosted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at <strong>St <\/strong><\/span><strong>Anne&#8217;s<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> DSG<\/strong>, in Hilton, and runs <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">from 30 June to 5 July<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There will be continuity on the leadership front, with coach Essex returning. He&#8217;ll <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be assisted by <strong>Kriekie Van Wyk<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 16-strong squad includes players from <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Curro Hazeldean<\/strong>, <strong>Ho\u00ebrskool Garsfontein<\/strong>, <strong>Waterkloof<\/strong>, <strong>Menlopark<\/strong>, <strong>Affies Meisieskool<\/strong>, <strong>Pretoria High School for Girls<\/strong>, <strong>CBC Mount Edmund<\/strong>, and <strong>Midstream College<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It is, though, a new-look team, with only <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Andrea Groenewald <\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <strong>Okuhle Ntshaba <\/strong>remaining from the 2024 lineup. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite having to work with a much younger side, coach Mbekeni said <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> excited to see what his girls can produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> very exciting to be coaching the Northerns u18A girls&#8217; side again,&#8221;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> always a great challenge to compete at a national level.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a very different side to last year, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> always exciting to work with different players and try to get the best out of them<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Schoolgirls&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> hockey in Pretoria has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons, making selection for national tournaments more challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While trying to pick the best possible side, the selectors have looked <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> combinations, strengths, and the X-factor.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Essex feels <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Northerns&#8217; squad possesses <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a good blend of those traits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;S<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">election is always difficult for Northerns,&#8221;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he acknowledged. &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">W<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e are blessed to have <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">very good<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> players across the region and a wide variety to choose from, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> always tough. However, I feel we&#8217;re <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">rewarding players that have done well throughout the year<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reflecting on narrowly missing out on gold in 2024 in Bloemfontein, coach Essex admitted coming so close only to be tripped up at the final hurdle after a penalty shootout still hurts.
