Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TeamphotoSA\">TeamPhotoSA<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After years of heartbreak, middling results, and a failure to meet targets, the <strong>Eastern Province (EP) u18A <\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">girls&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> team heads into the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>SASHOC National Week<\/strong> aiming to rewrite history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">girls&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> edition of the national event takes place at <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>St <\/strong><\/span><strong>Anne&#8217;s<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> DSG<\/strong>, in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, from 30 June to 5 July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the u18 boys will be in action on the iconic <strong>Pape&#8217;s<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> AstroTurf<\/strong> at <strong>Maritzburg College<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All the action will be <strong>LIVE<\/strong> on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/\">SuperSport Schools App<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>DStv Channel 216<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With their local schools&#8217; teams having shown up strongly against top sides from other provinces this season, Eastern Province will feel they have a good opportunity to make their mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The girls in black <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and red have struggled in the past, and last year mustered only a disappointing ninth-place finish in Bloemfontein.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The year before, they finished sixth, and in 2022, they ended eighth. Their best finish in the past five years came in 2019, when they <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sneaked into the top four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their past history won&#8217;t be tested in Hilton, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eastern Province might be regarded as underdogs by some, and not that much has been said about them, but <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">their opponents in Group A would beg to differ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The reality is that EP has one of the strongest teams <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they&#8217;ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> had in many years at a national event, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they&#8217;ll<\/span> again <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be led<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by the experienced <strong>Geowynne Gamiet<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coach Gamiet and his selectors have named a star-studded squad with players who have been capturing headlines all season long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The lineup includes a whopping seven players from <strong>Collegiate Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>, a school that has excelled all around the country this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Representing the Gqeberha school will be <strong>Eden Oliver<\/strong>, <strong>Gemma Bower<\/strong>, <strong>Taryn Peltenberg<\/strong>, <strong>Ayanda Klass<\/strong>, <strong>Kate Brennan<\/strong>, <strong>Khazimla Nogalawe<\/strong> and the dangerous <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Kerrin Gillies<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Out of the seven, only Bower was part of the u18A side last year, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the rest, except for Brennan, played in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/eastern-province-wins-first-sashoc-week-title-since\/\"><strong>u16A side that won SASHOC National Week gold<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gillies was instrumental for EP in that team and scored five goals to finish among the tournament&#8217;s top goal-scorers, which she&#8217;ll be eager to replicate<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joining the Collegiate girls will be the experienced<strong> DSG Makhanda<\/strong> trio of <strong>Mik\u00e8 Holder<\/strong>, <strong>Jessica Stevens<\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/holderness-enters-into-dsg-history-books-with-100th-cap\/\">Abigail Holderness<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Holder and Holderness need no further introduction. They&#8217;re <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">both influential returning <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">players,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> looking to inspire their side and share their wealth of knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Westering High School<\/strong> will also be represented in the A-team by <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Linati Goniwe <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Inathi Ndlazi<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ndlazi made the step up to the A-side after she was selected to play in the u18B team last year. Her schoolmate, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Goniwe,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was part of the u16A team and has also <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been rewarded<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for her hard work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Woodridge College&#8217;s<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> Anna Kirsten<\/strong> is the sole representative from her school. She has played for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Woodridge&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> first team for three years and recently made her 100th appearance for the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Goalkeeper <strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rebecca Haswell<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from <strong>Pearson<\/strong>, makes the move up from the u18B team last year to the A side in 2025<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The squad <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is completed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kezia Abersalie<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> also a top karateka, from <strong>Alexander Road High School<\/strong>, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Amber-Rose Roth-Uren<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from <strong>St <\/strong><\/span><strong>Dominic&#8217;s<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> Priory School<\/strong>, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has represented EP since she was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">u13<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Eastern Cape side is drawn in a very tough Pool A.
