BOYS\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Durban High School (DHS)<\/strong>, newcomers to the Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport<\/strong>, laid down a marker on Friday, day one of the competition, by posting a perfect five wins from five outings, including a 5-2 victory over the defending champion, Hilton College<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

With its shoot-from- anywhere-on-the-court format, hockey 5s is an exciting all-action affair. It invites teams to try out new ideas and to explore their flair, and those are ingredients that are ideally suited to DHS’s game. They lapped it up and enjoyed themselves. Newcomers to the tournament, they may be, but School <\/strong><\/em>quickly made themselves at home.<\/p>\n

In an always-meaningful clash, Hilton and Michaelhouse<\/strong> met in an early morning game, with ‘House<\/strong> <\/em>edging a tight contest 2-1.<\/p>\n

Last year’s runner-up, Garsfontein<\/strong>, put together an impressive opening day, bagging four wins, including a 5-2 defeat of their Pretoria rivals, St Alban’s College<\/strong>. They suffered one loss, but only after a penalty shootout against Hilton after their game had ended 5-5.<\/p>\n

Michaelhouse dropped only one match, falling 2-5 to DHS, and they needed a penalty shootout to get past Kearsney<\/strong> after their clash ended 4-4, but they’re in the running to make further noise on day two.<\/p>\n

GIRLS<\/b><\/p>\n

The defending champion, Danville Park Girls’ High<\/strong> endured mixed fortunes on Friday, winning two and losing two, while\u00a0St Mary’s DSG, Kloof<\/strong>, 2024’s runner-up, kept a clean record, with wins over Ashton<\/strong> and Epworth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Maris Stella<\/strong> picked up two one-goal wins but lost out on a penalty shootout against Danville.<\/p>\n
