{"id":82001,"date":"2025-09-02T06:28:59","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T04:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=82001"},"modified":"2025-09-02T06:28:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T04:28:59","slug":"a-high-scoring-gdl-weekend-but-sundowns-and-galaxy-draw-goalless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=82001","title":{"rendered":"A high-scoring GDL weekend, but Sundowns and Galaxy draw goalless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-29547\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gauteng-development-league-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"Gauteng Development League (GDL)\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gauteng-development-league-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/gauteng-development-league.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The weekend&#8217;s <strong>Gauteng Development League (GDL)<\/strong> action delivered many goals, but the log leaders, <strong>Mamelodi Sundowns<\/strong>, were held to a goalless draw by <strong>TS Galaxy<\/strong>, at Alex Stadium, on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>It was a big match for &#8216;<em><strong>Downs<\/strong><\/em>, who are in the thick of the title race alongside <strong>Highlands Park, Randburg AFC, Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA)<\/strong>, and <strong>SuperSport United<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the lead-up to the weekend&#8217;s GDL fixtures, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/\"><strong>SuperSport Schools Plus<\/strong><\/a> spoke with the u19 coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sundowns-coach-bergman-emphasises-effort-ahead-of-ts-galaxy-clash\/\"><strong>Kristopher Bergman<\/strong><\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He discussed the importance of fighting for every point in the GDL and emphasised that there are no gimmes in the league. TS Galaxy, he said, was a formidable team. He was right on the money as the sides settled for a share of the spoils and one point each.<\/p>\n<p>RESA, another of the title contenders, was held to a 2-2 draw by <strong>East Rand Athletic Club<\/strong> on Saturday.\u00a0SuperSport United, meanwhile, decisively defeated bottom of the table Elspark United Academy 5-0 at <strong>Curro Sagewood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a dominant outing from SuperSport, who opened their account through <strong>Orifha Maubelo <\/strong>off an assist from <strong>Thokozani Mabena<\/strong>. Maubelo struck again to make it 2-0. This time, he was assisted by <strong>Tlotliso Makgai<\/strong>, who was again involved and set up <strong>Tshiamo Selemela<\/strong> for SuperSport&#8217;s third.<\/p>\n<p>The exceptional Makgai made it a hat-trick of assists by aiding <strong>David Stober<\/strong> to score a fourth goal, and Stober made it a brace to complete the scoring, with <strong>Mpho Nteu<\/strong> laying on the scoring chance.<\/p>\n<p>Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/exclusive-this-group-has-been-terrific-randburg-afc-coach-lauds-his-players\/\"><strong>Skhosiphi Mgobhozi&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> team from Randburg AFC picked up a 2-0 victory over the <strong>University of Pretoria (Tuks)<\/strong>, with <strong>Jason Oliver<\/strong> and <strong>Onaishe Nyasvimbo<\/strong> netting to tighten up the intensifying GDL title race.<\/p>\n<p>The reigning champions, <strong>Highlands Park<\/strong>, had a hectic schedule, playing on both Saturday and Sunday, but they demonstrated their championship pedigree by emerging from that challenge with full points.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the <em><strong>Lions of the North<\/strong><\/em> edged out <strong>Joburg City<\/strong> 1-0, with <strong>Daniel Waisman<\/strong> scoring the match-winner. Then, on Sunday, they returned to the field and scored a 3-0 win over Tuks, who went down for the second time on the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In other matches, <strong>Jomo Cosmos<\/strong> played to a 1-1 draw to take points off of high-flying <strong>Kathorus Hyper Academy<\/strong>, who have been on <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/kathorus-lights-up-gdl-season\/\"><strong>an impressive winning streak<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>Sabelo Makhanya<\/strong> scored the only goal for <em><strong>EzeNkosi<\/strong><\/em>, while <strong>Ayabonga Dlamini<\/strong> found the back of the net for Kathorus.<\/p>\n<p>In a thriller, <strong>Rockefvs <\/strong>and <strong>Panorama FC<\/strong>, went end-to-end in an entertaining 3-3 draw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The School of Excellence<\/strong>, which has seemingly lost its edge in recent seasons, bagged a heartening win. Last week, they had suffered a heavy 1-4 defeat against <strong>Kaizer Chiefs<\/strong>.
