{"id":82275,"date":"2025-09-04T17:48:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T15:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=82275"},"modified":"2025-09-04T17:48:51","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T15:48:51","slug":"gauteng-schools-champions-league-kicks-off-with-a-bang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=82275","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng Schools Champions League kicks off with a bang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-29496 \" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Football-Schools-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Ball\" width=\"443\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Football-Schools-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Football-Schools.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/>The eagerly awaited third edition of the <strong>Gauteng Schools Wednesday Champions League<\/strong> kicked off on Wednesday at the <strong>Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre in Krugersdorp.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The league features a four-week period of intense participation from high-performing schools in the Gauteng province, who compete in three sporting codes: football, netball, and volleyball.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/clapham-high-school-lifts-the-absa-wilderklawer-soccer-tournament-title\/\"><strong>Clapham High School<\/strong><\/a>, won the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/ibercup-winners-crowned-champions-reactions\/\"><strong>Iber Cup South Africa<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/clapham-high-school-lifts-the-absa-wilderklawer-soccer-tournament-title\/\"><strong>Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament<\/strong><\/a>. They also went back-to-back as the champion of the Gauteng Schools Wednesday Champions League football competition.<\/p>\n<p>In the girls&#8217; football category, <strong>Jabulile Secondary School<\/strong> achieved back-to-back titles.<\/p>\n<p>The Gauteng Schools Wednesday Champions League is a proud initiative of the <strong>Gauteng Provincial Government, <\/strong>and its aim is to advance the development of school sports by focusing on increasing participation and creating opportunities for talent identification in school sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boys&#8217; Competition\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, in the boys&#8217; football competition, Clapham High kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against <strong>Ibongo Secondary School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was an unexpected start for the champions, who are accustomed to dominating their opponent. Ibongo, though, stood firm and were relentless in their efforts as they came away with a share of the spoils.<\/p>\n<p>While Clapham was held to a draw, the <strong>School of Excellence<\/strong> soared, beating <strong>Mokgome Secondary<\/strong> 4-0 and <strong>Rutasetjhaba Secondary School <\/strong>3-0.<\/p>\n<p>Well beaten in their first outing, Mokgome regrouped and rebounded well, to hand Ibongo a 2-0 defeat in their second march.<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of the tournament, <strong>Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sport School<\/strong> also excelled. They opened with a 3-0 victory over Rutasetjhaba and followed that with a hard-fought 2-1 win over <strong>Thuto Lefa Secondary School<\/strong> to come away with a full haul of six points.<\/p>\n<p>In their second match, Thuto Lefa played to a 1-1 draw with <strong>Je Malepe Secondary School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girls&#8217; Competition\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Clapham High&#8217;s boys&#8217; team made a stuttering start to their campaign, their girls&#8217; side had no such problems, rattling the back of the net to the tune of 15 goals on the opening day without conceding.<\/p>\n<p>They began their assignments with a 3-0 win over <strong>Jabulile Secondary School <\/strong>and then hit top gear in a 12-0 shellacking of <strong>Randfontein High<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Khanya Lesedi Secondary School<\/strong> got off to a difficult start, sharing a 1-1 draw with <strong>Buhle BemFundo <\/strong>before falling 1-2 to Jabulile Secondary.<\/p>\n<p>Randfontein High, apart from their one-sided loss against Clapham, was also beaten 4-0 by <strong>Zithobeni Secondary School<\/strong>.
