Former Blitsbok and manager of the SA 7’s Academy, Marius Schoeman, attended a couple of last year’s tournaments. His own tournament the Marius Schoeman 7’s tournament at his alma mater, Paarl Gimnasium, formed part of the series.

There are 11 tournaments in the series with the highlight being the Champion of Champions tournament which will again be hosted by Camp Discovery just north of Pretoria. Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch was crowned champions during last year’s inaugural series.

During the Champion of Champions tournament all the champions of the individual tournaments during the series as well as a few “wild card” teams will be invited.

The first tournament of this year’s series was hosted by Jim Fouché in Bloemfontein and was won by Grey College. Hoërskool Rustenburg and Glenwood High School of Durban will host the next tournaments on 17 and 18 August.

The tournament organiser is Darryl Weir. He is well-known in sevens circles and was also an integral part of the @lantic Sevens Series which played a major developing role in Blitsbokke like Branco du Preez, Hoffman Maritz, Cecil Afrika and Justin Geduld.

According to Weir, it is great to have a local partner like Twizza being a proudly South African brand, onboard. With rugby 7s being a very successful and transformed sport, having a dynamic partnership is great to be able to further improve the brand of 7s rugby and provide as many young players as possible with the opportunity to play 7s rugby.

The High School 7’s Series tournaments:

17 & 18 August – Hoërskool Rustenburg (u15 & u18)
17 & 18 August – Glenwood (u15 & u18)
24 & 25 August – Pionier (Vryheid) (u15 & u18)
1 September – Noordheuwel in Krugersdorp (u18)
7 & 8 September – Durban High School (u15 & u18)
7 & 8 September – Marius Schoeman 7s at Paarl Gim (U15 & U17)
8 September – Diamantveld in Kimberley (u15 & u17)
14 & 15 September – Bergvlam in Nelspruit (u15 & u18)
21 & 22 September – Merensky in Tzaneen (u15 & u18)
12 & 13 October – Brandwag in Benoni (u15 & u18)
19 & 20 October – Champions of Champions (u18, Camp Discovery Pretoria)

South Africa’s premier schools’ sevens series, the High School 7’s Series, has partnered with the country’s first official Proudly South African soft-drink, Twizza. During last year’s series there were 108 different schools that participated with more than 1250 players taking part in the competition.
