Twenty teams from across the country will assemble at Cape Town’s Wynberg Boys’ High<\/strong> this weekend for the prestigious u15 Ian Melliar Cup<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual event <\/span>runs<\/span> from 25 to 28<\/span>\u00a0September<\/span>, with <\/span>matches being played<\/span> at the Wynberg <\/span>Boys’<\/span> High and Junior School Pools.<\/span><\/p>\n

The teams have been divided into four <\/span>groups of five, with the defending champions, Rondebosch Boys’ High<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, in Pool B.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cape outfit won the title in 2024 after dominating Clifton College<\/strong> in the final, winning 10-2<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Standing in the way in their group will be Glenwood House,<\/strong> from George, KZN’s Maritzburg College<\/strong>, and the Gauteng duo of Pretoria <\/strong><\/span>Boys<\/strong>\u00a0High<\/strong> (PBHS)<\/strong> and St <\/strong><\/span>David’s<\/strong> Marist Inanda<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

‘Bosch<\/strong> <\/em>was outstanding at last <\/span>year’s<\/span> tournament, going unbeaten through their pool assignments and in the playoffs. They faced\u00a0<\/span>Glenwood House, PBHS and St David’s and<\/span>\u00a0scored<\/span> a combined <\/span>whopping<\/span> 33 goals in those three outings.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019ll<\/span> be favoured to go all the way once again. Their quest for back-to-back titles begins against St <\/span>David’s<\/span> on day one at 16:00.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pool A, meanwhile, will <\/span>be contested<\/span> by Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Seunskool<\/strong> (Affies)<\/strong>, Grey High<\/strong>, Hilton College<\/strong>, Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong> (PRG), and the hosts, Wynberg Boys’ High<\/strong><\/span>. Based on last year’s performances, it’s likely to be a tightly contested group.<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of those five teams, <\/span>it was <\/span>Wynberg who finished the highest in 2024, in fourth, while Hilton was right behind them, in fifth place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul Roos and Grey High finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while Affies will be aiming to improve on their 11th place finish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pool C is wide open.\u00a0<\/span>Bishops<\/strong>, the champions of 2023, will fancy their chances of getting the job done against a Cape Town Invitational<\/strong> side and Reddam House Constantia<\/strong>. They also take on Kearsney College<\/strong> and Selborne College<\/strong>, with the East London school returning to the event after a <\/span>year’s<\/span> absence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last <\/span>year’s<\/span> silver medal winners, Clifton College, who are in good early season form, are in Pool D. They’re up against a <\/span>Buffalo City Invitational<\/strong> team, Paarl <\/strong><\/span>Boys’<\/strong>\u00a0High<\/strong>, South African College High School<\/strong> (SACS)<\/strong>, and the formidable St <\/strong><\/span>John’s<\/strong> College<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clifton showed impressive grit when they made the final last year after finishing third in their pool with three wins, a loss and a draw.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the quarterfinals, they edged out Kearsney 6-5 before downing Wynberg 7-6 in the semi-finals to sneak into the title deciding game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those tight playoff wins caught up to the Durban boys in the final, but they’ll draw inspiration from their performances as the aim to go one step further this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament commences with two matches at 14:00 when Paarl <\/span>Boys\u2019<\/span> High and SACS meet at the Wynberg <\/span>Boys’<\/span> High Pool, while Wynberg tackles Paul Roos at the Junior Pool.<\/span><\/p>\n
