Photo: Brad Morgan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>Durban Girls&#8217; College<\/strong> <strong>(DGC)<\/strong> first water polo side has enjoyed an incredible start to the season under the leadership of head coach <strong>Peter Lavett<\/strong> and captain<strong> Lara Mervis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They began their campaign by winning the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/durban-girls-college-are-kzn-top-10-water-polo-champions\/\">KZN Top 10 Girls&#8217; Water Polo Tournament<\/a><\/strong> in home waters earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>DGC was dominant, dictating play from start to finish in an unbeaten run which culminated in a 10-2 win over <strong>St Anne&#8217;s Diocesan College<\/strong> in the final.<\/p>\n<p>A week later, the Durbanites\u00a0 journeyed to Cape Town to contest the <strong>Mackenzie Cup<\/strong>, which was hosted by <strong>Reddam House Constantia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>DGC headed into the event with a good history at the tournament, having won it in 2023, but they were defeated in the semi-finals in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>There were no mishaps this time around as coach Lavett&#8217;s girls brought their A-game and dominated their Pool, beating <strong>Herschel Girls School<\/strong>, <strong>Clarendon<\/strong>, and <strong>Glenwood House<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, they thumped<strong> DSG Makhanda<\/strong> 9-2 in the semifinals. They were made to work hard by Reddam House, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/reddam-beats-herschel-to-win-the-mackenzie-cup-in-home-waters\/\"><strong>the team that had ended their run in 2024<\/strong><\/a>, in the final, but they came through with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/durban-girls-college-downs-reddam-house-constantia-in-mackenzie-cup-final\/\">an 8-6 win over the hosts<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All of those outstanding achievements, however, are in the past, and DGC&#8217;s focus has shifted to the <strong>St Anne&#8217;s Water Polo Tournament<\/strong>, which runs from 26-28 September.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83664\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-83664\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/water-polo-dgc-peter-lavett-250925-400x278.jpg\" alt=\"Durban Girls' College water polo coach Peter Lavett. Photo: Brad Morgan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Coach Lavett spoke to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/watersports\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong> ahead of the tournament. &#8220;The mood in the camp is really high and focused on the tournament ahead,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All players have performed [well], and we are in a good space. At the Mackenzie Cup, we followed the game plan at all times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The players know their role in each position, and we play to the last whistle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DGC, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/reddam-constantia-crowned-st-annes-water-polo-tournament-champs\/\">seventh-place finishers in last year&#8217;s tournament<\/a><\/strong>, have been drawn in Pool B where they will face <strong>Roedean School<\/strong>, <strong>Rhenish Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>, and <strong>St Dominic&#8217;s Boksburg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lavett believes his charges are in for a difficult challenge: &#8220;We are in a really tough pool and need to be at our best,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But we need to beat everyone if we want to go all the way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Spectators can expect a fast, disciplined team that does not stop, with a solid bench that doesn&#8217;t slow us down at the end of a game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DGC&#8217;s quest for a third trophy will begin against St Dominic&#8217;s at 11:45 on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Catch the game LIVE on <a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/events\/68d418e2727585c6132bfb26\/\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DGC TEAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hannah Weinert, Inge Southey, Isabella Stephenson, Kayla Andrews, Josie Phillips, Bailey Bartlett, Lara Nel, Lara Mervis \u00a9, Riley Coetzee, Peta Mazery, Lia Janse van Rensburg, Jazlyn Moolman, Nthabiseng Mathibeli.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coach<\/strong> \u2013 Peter Lavett<br \/>\n<strong>Manager<\/strong> \u2013 Alexandra Robinson<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Durban Girls&#8217; College (DGC) first water polo side has enjoyed an incredible start to the season under the leadership of head coach Peter Lavett and captain Lara Mervis.
