Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Wynberg.IanMelliarCup\"><strong>Wynberg&#8217;s Ian Melliar Cup Waterpolo Tournament on Facebook<\/strong><\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dominating almost all of their opposition, with a strong defence and moments of individual brilliance, <strong>Rondebosch <\/strong><\/span><strong>Boys&#8217;<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>\u00a0High<\/strong> claimed the <strong>Ian Melliar<\/strong> <strong>Cup<\/strong> for a second successive year in Cape Town on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;<em><strong>Bosch<\/strong> <\/em>was clinical throughout the tournament and completed an impressive run with a convincing 13-6 win over <strong>St <\/strong><\/span><strong>John&#8217;s<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> College<\/strong>\u00a0in the final at <strong>Wynberg <\/strong><\/span><strong>Boys&#8217;<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> High&#8217;s Top Pool<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The side, coached by the experienced <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Etienne le Roux<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> headed into the tournament as the favourites, having gone all the way in 2024, before continuing to stack wins in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rondebosch, though, got off to a rocky start when they fell to a shock 4-5 loss to <strong>St <\/strong><\/span><strong>David&#8217;s<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> Marist Inanda<\/strong> on the opening day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They quickly put that defeat behind them and, on day two, thumped<strong> Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> 7-2 before scoring 13 goals against <strong>Glenwood House<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They went on to net 15 unanswered goals against<strong> Maritzburg College<\/strong> to set up a playoff match against<strong> Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong> (PRG).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Once again, it was one-way traffic, with Rondebosch breezing past PRG 13-3. In the quarterfinals, they took on <strong>Clifton College<\/strong> and came away with a 12-7 victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That was a vital victory over a dangerous side, with Clifton having already beaten <strong>SACS<\/strong> and St John&#8217;s. Later, they also beat St David&#8217;s. In the end, the &#8216;Bosch loss was the only defeat suffered by the Durban side.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By the quarterfinals, coach Le <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Roux&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> side had hit their stride, and they looked well-nigh unstoppable. In the semi-finals, though, they were made to dig deep for a 9-7 win over <strong>SACS<\/strong>. St John&#8217;s, meanwhile, handed Wynberg a 10-5 loss to qualify for the final.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was neck-and-neck in the early exchanges of the title game. However, &#8216;Bosch started to pull away in the latter parts of the contest to win going away. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83941\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-83941\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/54817494555_8100d80837_o-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Wynberg.IanMelliarCup\">Wynberg&#8217;s Ian Melliar Cup Waterpolo Tournament on Facebook<\/a><\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> am immensely proud of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">team&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> performance,&#8221;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Roux told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/watersports\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong> after the title game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;W<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e had a really bad start to the tournament, with the team having their first loss ever. We had to dig deep to reset and get back to our game and win the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he boys showed incredible maturity to be able to accept a loss, learn from it, and then perform, which was the key to our trophy [success].&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Roux said a productive off-season had allowed his team to prepare well for the challenges that awaited in the fourth term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That off-season included, for some, a tour to Montenegro in July.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After that, they took on daily sessions from August, with a key focus being on implementing a strong defensive system to help the players get used to the style of water polo Le Roux wants to employ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> would describe our style as a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8216;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">suffocation&#8217;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">way to play,&#8221;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the coach explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;W<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e place a lot of focus on limiting mistakes on defence, which makes it incredibly hard for teams to score past us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;A<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">s the game continues, the<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">opposition tends to panic when they cannot score goals. Defence is an absolute key for us, and the boys executed it very well. We conceded very few goals, which then, also, built the base for our attack<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83942\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-83942 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/54817564199_73e97f84ae_o-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Wynberg.IanMelliarCup\">Wynberg&#8217;s Ian Melliar Cup Waterpolo Tournament on Facebook<\/a><\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Roux also lauded his team&#8217;s cohesion. &#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> think the entire team performed really well together, and as a team, we are always stronger,&#8221; he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here were some excellent performances all round from all the players. I am glad that some of the boys &#8211; <strong>Ross Webber<\/strong>, <strong>Nathan Corlett<\/strong>, <strong>Ross Briers-Danks<\/strong> and <strong>Blake Galpin <\/strong>&#8211; were recognised for their playing by being selected for the team of the tournament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;T<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here were some individual awards &#8211; Best Defender, Blake Galpin, and MVP, Nathan Corlett.
