Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/debbiadcockphotography\/\">Debbi Adcock Photography<\/a><\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Only four teams were able to book their spots in the quarterfinals of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/big-guns-on-song-on-opening-day-of-saints-invitational\/\">St Stithians College Water Polo Invitational<\/a><\/strong> on Friday, day two of the tournament, in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>After topping their respective pools, <strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/strong>, <strong>South African College High School<\/strong> <strong>(SACS)<\/strong>, <strong>St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda<\/strong>, and <strong>St Stithians<\/strong>, marched into the last eight.<\/p>\n<p>They will, however, have to wait until 09:30 on Friday morning to find out who they&#8217;ll face for a place in the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bishops Diocesan College<\/strong>, <strong>Hilton College<\/strong>, <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong>, and <strong>Kearsney<\/strong> <strong>College<\/strong> all finished second in their pools, meaning they&#8217;ll have to win a cross-pool playoff match to reach the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>There was plenty at stake on Friday after the event <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/big-guns-on-song-on-opening-day-of-saints-invitational\/\">got off to a cracking start on Thursday<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Pool A, Rondebosch and Bishops continued their dominance, scoring big wins over <strong>Michaelhouse<\/strong> and <strong>Pearson High<\/strong>, respectively. The Cape Town rivals then met to decide first place in the group.<\/p>\n<p>It was a nail-biting <strong><em>Bish\/Bosch<\/em><\/strong> clash, with coach <strong>Jared Wingate-Pearse&#8217;<\/strong>s Rondebosch side making their intentions clear from the get-go.\u00a0They quickly rushed to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, thanks to a <strong>Kieran Bennewith<\/strong> brace.<\/p>\n<p>Bishops responded in the second chukka through<strong> James Malan<\/strong> and <strong>Christo Le Roux<\/strong>. That wasn\u2019t enough, though, as <strong>Zack Labuschagne<\/strong>, <strong>Noah Reiback<\/strong>, and<strong> Jason Warneke<\/strong> netted to make it 5-2 to &#8216;Bosch at the halftime break.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Waterpolo - Affies vs St Andrew&amp;apos;s College - Saints Senior Waterpolo Festival - 17 Oct 2025\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zk5qn3Lfit8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second half was all about Rondebosch despite an attempted late comeback by coach<strong> Jabulani Sibiya&#8217;<\/strong>s Bishops&#8217; boys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nathan Corlett<\/strong> added his name to the scoresheet before Bennewith made it seven and completed his hat-trick in the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Young<\/strong> and <strong>Matt Fenn<\/strong> led a late charge for Bishops, but it had come too late, and <strong>Dante Moore<\/strong> joined the scoring action before Rondebosch sealed an 11-8 win with strikes by Labuschagne, Warneke, and Reiback.<\/p>\n<p>There was another decider in Pool B between St John&#8217;s and SACS. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/debbiadcockphotography\/\">Debbi Adcock Photography<\/a><\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the opening two chukkas, there was very little to separate the sides, with St John&#8217;s narrowly ahead by 4-3 at the break.<\/p>\n<p>Their goals came from braces by <strong>Luke Shipway<\/strong> and <strong>Christopher Chapman<\/strong>, while <strong>Ben Bigara<\/strong> netted two, and <strong>Luca Orgill<\/strong> scored from five metres out for SACS.<\/p>\n<p>The second half was tightly contested, and the goalkeepers, <strong>Seth Hopkins<\/strong> and <strong>Oskar Stahljans<\/strong>, were frequently called into action.<\/p>\n<p>After a long period with no goals, <strong>Simon Mussett<\/strong> made it five for St John\u2019s before Bigara completed his hat-trick.<\/p>\n<p>The Johannesburg side got their sixth through <strong>Fu-Nam Chen<\/strong> in the fourth chukka, but SACS scored twice through Bigara to snatch a thrilling 6-6 draw.<\/p>\n<p>With that share of the spoils, SACS finished on top of Pool B on goal difference.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Waterpolo - Pearson High School vs King Edward VII - Saints Senior Waterpolo Festival - 17 Oct 2025\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vb8-3BYsTfI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>First place in Pool C was decided when St David&#8217;s defeated Hilton 11-7.<\/p>\n<p>The Sandton-based side had overwhelmed<strong> Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> 9-4 earlier in the day, while Hilton brushed off <strong>Woodridge College<\/strong> 10-1.<\/p>\n<p>It was, however, St David\u2019s who made a bright start, firing into a 2-0 lead in the first chukka before Hilton fought back to trail only 4-5 midway through the contest.<\/p>\n<p>In the second half, coach <strong>Dean Whyte<\/strong>&#8216;s St David&#8217;s side upped the ante and outscored Hilton by six goals to three in the remaining two chukkas.<\/p>\n<p>For a second day running, there were valiant contributions from <strong>Luke Laporte<\/strong>, <strong>Matthew Peacock<\/strong>, <strong>Cooper Haworth<\/strong>, and <strong>Danilo Giuricich<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85149\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85149\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-85149\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Saints-proress-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"The hosts, St Stithians, drew 5-5 with Kearsney on day two of the Saints Stayers but progressed to the last eight after finishing atop Pool D. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/debbiadcockphotography\/\">Debbi Adcock Photography<\/a>.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day&#8217;s proceedings ended with a Pool D fixture between the hosts, <strong><em>Saints<\/em><\/strong>, and the defending champions, Kearsney College.<\/p>\n<p>Saints hadn\u2019t lost a single game up to that point, but Kearsney had been stunned by <em><strong>Affies<\/strong><\/em> earlier in the day, with the Pretoria school claiming a 10-8 win.<\/p>\n<p>In the opening chukka, Kearsney looked sharp and they edged ahead. St Stithians came out firing in the second chukka, however, which brought them a slender 4-3 halftime lead.<\/p>\n<p>It was end-to-end stuff in the second half, with coach <strong>Nic Rodda<\/strong>&#8216;s Kearsney snatching back the lead.<\/p>\n<p>Coach <strong>Michael Stewart<\/strong>\u2019s team talk heading into the fourth chukka worked like a charm, though, as Saints grabbed an equaliser to level the game at 5-5.
