{"id":8550,"date":"2019-03-12T07:48:35","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T07:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rugby.supersportschools.com\/sacs-geared-up-for-tough-st-andrew-s-challenge\/"},"modified":"2019-03-12T07:48:35","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T07:48:35","slug":"sacs-geared-up-for-tough-st-andrew-s-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=8550","title":{"rendered":"SACS geared up for tough St Andrew\u2019s challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-8549\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 5px 0px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/rugby.supersportschools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/NewsGSACS.jpg\" alt=\"NewsGSACS\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>SACS, one of the oldest schools in South Africa, are gearing themselves up for an exciting trip to the Eastern Cape when they compete in the Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day in Grahamstown for the first time on Saturday (March 16).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Officially called South African College Schools, but far better known as SACS, the Cape Town outfit will take on local team St Andrew\u2019s College in the day\u2019s third last game and it should be a thriller between two schools with long and proud traditions in the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Founded in 1829, SACS <\/span>have<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> produced numerous international stars, perhaps the most famous being Springbok fullback and 2007 World Cup winner Percy Montgomery and Proteas batsman Peter Kirsten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The class of 2019, however, will have their sights firmly fixed on the challenge posed by the Grahamstown outfit, whose emphasis on running rugby should capture the visitors\u2019 attention from the outset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SACS coach Nick Maurer was in no doubt about the test which awaited them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSt Andrew\u2019s are a highly respected rugby school, renowned for their fight, fitness and skill levels,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are expecting a very tough battle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He added that touring was a big priority for SACS players and they were looking forward to making their debut in fresh surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe have heard great things about the Graeme Rugby Day and we are excited to have been invited. We are also looking forward to enjoying the legendary Eastern Cape hospitality!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The team will have the benefit of their headmaster\u2019s knowledge of rugby in the region, with former Queen\u2019s College principal Brendan Grant having coached the Grey High first team, as well as being deputy headmaster at Graeme for several years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maurer said they would be bringing a relatively inexperienced squad to Grahamstown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe have a few players who have some with <\/span>first team<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> experience from last year, but none who played more than 66% of the games,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSo we are quite an inexperienced squad, but we have many Grade 12s who are keen to prove a point and also some exciting youngsters coming in from last year\u2019s U16 division.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He said their preparations were on track and they were as ready as they could be for the 2019 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe have just concluded another comprehensive pre-season,\u201d said Maurer, \u201cand are content that we could not have done more to prepare the boys for the 2019 campaign.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SACS, one of the oldest schools in South Africa, are gearing themselves up for an exciting trip to the Eastern Cape when they compete in the Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day in Grahamstown for the first time on Saturday (March 16).
