{"id":8554,"date":"2019-03-14T06:50:57","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T06:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rugby.supersportschools.com\/graeme-rugby-day-set-for-explosive-action\/"},"modified":"2019-03-14T06:50:57","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T06:50:57","slug":"graeme-rugby-day-set-for-explosive-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=8554","title":{"rendered":"Graeme Rugby Day set for explosive action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-8097\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px 5px 0px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/rugby.supersportschools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/NewsGGraemeCollege.jpg\" alt=\"NewsGGraemeCollege\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>Some early skirmishes have taken place, but the Eastern Cape schools programme is set to explode into action when the annual Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day takes place in Grahamstown on Saturday (March 16).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Graeme organisers have again lined up a feast of entertaining matches for this popular tournament, with the top schools from the region all getting another chance to fine-tune their squads for the forthcoming season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition, rugby enthusiasts can look forward to a taste of Western Cape rugby as SACS are attending it for the first time. The Cape Town school will take on leading Grahamstown outfit St Andrew\u2019s in the 13.50 game on the Somerset field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SACS coach Nick Maurer said they were delighted to receive the invitation to a festival of rugby they had heard much about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe know we face a big challenge against St Andrew\u2019s, but we are looking to put in a committed performance which will hopefully bond us as a team going forward,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe want to expose as many of our players to the intensity and pressure of first team rugby which will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Should he be in attendance, as is likely, it will be something of a homecoming for SACS headmaster Brendan Grant, who spent several years as deputy headmaster at Graeme. His knowledge of Eastern Cape rugby should help to prepare the Cape Town side for the examination ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A youthful Graeme team, who received a sobering lesson against Framesby last week, will have a chance to show what they have learnt when they face Dale in the day\u2019s feature match at 16.10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coach Jonty van der Meulen has only two players back from last year\u2019s squad, so the team is on a massive learning curve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite including several players in the squad from the talented U16 group of 2018, it will take a while for them to adapt to the higher pace and skill levels of first team rugby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They will be thoroughly examined by a school which seldom field a poor side and are fresh off a 56-24 trouncing of Stirling in the Border Rugby Day last weekend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As usual, there are a number of cross-border fixtures on the programme, pitting EP schools against their Border counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Queen\u2019s College may face a tough encounter with Framesby, while East London\u2019s Hudson Park will be equally well tested by Grey High.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another fascinating game will be the 12.40 clash where the small, but always competitive, Marlow Agricultural pit their skills against East London powerhouse Selborne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The main curtain-raiser (15.00) should be a real humdinger when a promising Kingswood side attempt to lay down an early-season marker against Port Elizabeth rivals Pearson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Somerset field fixtures are:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8.00\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mary Waters v PJ Olivier<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9.10\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Port Alfred High v Muir<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10.20\u00a0\u00a0 Queen\u2019s v Framesby<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11.30\u00a0\u00a0 Grey High v Hudson Park<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">12.40\u00a0\u00a0 Marlow Agricultural v Selborne<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">13.50\u00a0\u00a0 St Andrew\u2019s v SACS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">15.00 \u00a0Kingswood v Pearson<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">16.10\u00a0\u00a0 Graeme College v Dale College<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some early skirmishes have taken place, but the Eastern Cape schools programme is set to explode into action when the annual Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day takes place in Grahamstown on Saturday (March 16).
