Photo: <strong>Pius Nkosi<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <strong>South African<\/strong> u17 boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 teams showed glimpses of their potential on the opening day of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sa-u17-teams-and-fixtures-for-the-2025-dato-mirnawan-cup\/\">Dato Mirnawan Cup<\/a><\/strong>, in Malaysia, on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The annual international tournament, hosted by the <strong>Malaysian Hockey Federation<\/strong>, runs through to Sunday, 9 November, in Kuala Lumpur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s an u18 event, but the <strong>South African Schools Hockey Association<\/strong> <strong>(SASHOC)<\/strong> has sent national u17 sides to it over the past three seasons in an effort to build for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The boys&#8217; team opened their campaign against the <strong>Australian Crocs<\/strong>, while the girls took on <strong>Queensland<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">BOYS&#8217; RECAP<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beginning with a morale-boosting win was the goal for the SA u17 boys and they fulfilled that goal by beating the Crocs 2-0. After a fifth-place finish in 2024, it was an encouraging start for coach <strong>Justin Collins<\/strong>&#8216; charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was all South Africa in the early going, with skipper <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/maseko-entrusted-to-lead-sa-u17s-at-dato-mirnawan-cup\/\">Mohlodi Maseko<\/a><\/strong> opening the scoring in the first minute. <strong>Thandanani Zuma<\/strong> made it 2-0 eight minutes later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From there, South Africa held on for the win despite having to weather several promising attacks from their opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I think the first half was really good from the boys,&#8221; captain Maseko told team manager <strong>Pius Nkosi<\/strong> after the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We put them under pressure and created a lot of opportunities for ourselves. Towards the second half, we started playing around too much and made some mistakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t create as many chances but, overall, I think it was a good shift from the boys to win the game 2-0.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maseko and his team will take on the <strong>Malaysia Tigers<\/strong> in their next game on Monday at <strong>12:00 SAST<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86082\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86082\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-86082\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SA-u17-girls--400x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The SA u17 girls showed fight and character but went down against Queensland in their opening match of the tournament. Photo: <strong>Thando Ndlovu<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">GIRLS&#8217; RECAP<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was not the best of starts for the girls\u2019 team, who went down to a 1-3 defeat against <strong>Queensland<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The South African side was on the back foot early on and conceded three goals in the first half. However, after the halftime break, they showed character and fight to pull a goal back with\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hudson-park-star-mayekiso-eager-to-don-sa-colours-in-malaysia\/\">Busiwe Mayekiso <\/a><\/strong><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">from<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> Hudson Park High<\/strong>, opening the team&#8217;s goal-scoring account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite the loss, co-captains <strong>Katherine Sickle<\/strong> and <strong>Ella Bowyer<\/strong> said they remained optimistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I think the girls played well and dominated the game. We were just unlucky with the score, but we will keep pushing for the days to come,&#8221; Sickle told team manager <strong>Thando Ndlovu<\/strong> after the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The team really feels good, even though the score didn&#8217;t go our way.
