{"id":88118,"date":"2026-01-05T20:46:58","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T18:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=88118"},"modified":"2026-01-05T20:46:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T18:46:58","slug":"morkel-and-eldoraigne-clear-favourites-after-first-day-of-kovsie-smash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=88118","title":{"rendered":"Morkel and Eldoraigne clear favourites after first day of Kovsie Smash"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_88142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88142\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88142\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BZ8W3108-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Absolute Photos\/Dirkie Groenewald.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BLOEMFONTEIN &#8211; <strong data-start=\"207\" data-end=\"231\">Ho\u00ebrskool Eldoraigne<\/strong> has emerged as the early favourite after the opening day of the <strong data-start=\"303\" data-end=\"319\">Kovsie Smash<\/strong>, hosted by <strong data-start=\"331\" data-end=\"357\">Ho\u00ebrskool Fichardtpark<\/strong>, in Bloemfontein.<\/p>\n<p>Like much of the country, the City of Roses experienced persistent rainfall on the eve of the tournament and intermittent rain throughout the first day.\u00a0The conditions, however, did little to slow <strong data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"601\">Eldoraigne<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"601\">Benyael Morkel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He set the early pace with the bat, hitting back-to-back half-centuries to finish Monday&#8217;s games with 161 runs to his name.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"1042\">He scored 62 in a morning match against <strong data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"827\">Potchefstroom Volkskool&#8217;<\/strong>s stayers, which helped <strong><em>Eldos<\/em><\/strong> to a commanding 72-run victory. Then, in the afternoon, he followed that up with an even more dominant 99 not out against <strong data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"965\">Ho\u00ebrskool Sentraal<\/strong>. In both innings, Morkel struck at a run scoring rate in excess of 150.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1044\" data-end=\"1404\">Opening alongside him, <strong data-start=\"1067\" data-end=\"1081\">Vince Lotz<\/strong>, an experienced campaigner for the Centurion-based outfit, was also in fine touch, amassing a combined 83 runs across the two fixtures.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"1221\" data-end=\"1235\">Eldoraigne<\/strong> wrapped up their second match with another emphatic result, beating <em><strong>Tralies <\/strong><\/em>by 61 runs. Sentraal is one of three Bloemfontein schools competing in the tournament.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1406\" data-end=\"1639\">Another standout for <strong data-start=\"1427\" data-end=\"1441\">Eldoraigne<\/strong> was <strong data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1463\">Heinrich Klue<\/strong>, who became the first bowler to claim a five-wicket haul, knocking over 5\/13 to lead the way against Volkies&#8217;\u00a0youthful batting line-up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"2086\"><strong data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1659\">Janco de Lange<\/strong> was the cornerstone of <strong data-start=\"1683\" data-end=\"1707\">Ho\u00ebrskool Overvaal<\/strong>\u2019s two victories, which came against <strong data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"1760\">Ho\u00ebrskool Trio<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1787\">Goudveld Ho\u00ebrskool<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>De Lange, who clearly enjoyed the batting conditions at the <strong>Kovsies C Field<\/strong>, was the only batsman besides Benyael Morkel to record consecutive half-centuries on the opening day.<\/p>\n<p>He launched his campaign with a brisk 53 from 39 balls to steer his side to a seven-wicket win over the Trio.\u00a0His follow-up innings of 77 from 58 balls against <strong data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2153\">Goudveld<\/strong> was even more commanding and powered <strong data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2201\">Overvaal<\/strong> to the largest margin of victory margin on the day &#8211; a 74-run triumph.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2264\" data-end=\"2453\">De Lange&#8217;s influence extended beyond the bat. He also made telling contributions with the ball, finishing the day with five wickets, which included a splendid 4\/8 against <em><strong data-start=\"3908\" data-end=\"3919\">Gouties<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2455\" data-end=\"2912\"><strong data-start=\"2455\" data-end=\"2471\">Cobus Wilken<\/strong>, of <strong data-start=\"2475\" data-end=\"2489\">Jim Fouch\u00e9<\/strong>, left it late to return the best bowling figures of the tournament thus far. He was outstanding against <strong data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2628\">Merensky Landbou Akademie<\/strong>, capturing a remarkable 5\/8 to restrict the Tzaneen school to just 67\/9 from their 20 overs.<\/p>\n<p>In a comprehensive win over <strong>Witteberg<\/strong>, he snapped up 3\/7. That left him atop the wicket-taking charts at the end of the day with eight scalps to his name at a miserly cost of only 15 runs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"3376\">In addition to the aforementioned five-wicket hauls, the opening day also featured five four-wicket hauls, including <strong data-start=\"3020\" data-end=\"3034\">De Lange<\/strong>&#8216;s superb effort against Goudveld.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"3054\" data-end=\"3074\">Juvan van Tonder<\/strong>, of <strong data-start=\"3078\" data-end=\"3103\">Ho\u00ebrskool Lichtenburg<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"3108\" data-end=\"3127\">Sevreano Lackey<\/strong>, of <strong data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3144\">Duineveld<\/strong>, both returned figures of 4\/11. Van Tonder\u2019s spell was particularly significant as it enabled <em><strong data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3249\">Liggies<\/strong> <\/em>to defend a modest total of 76 after Lackey had ripped through Lichtenburg&#8217;s innings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3378\" data-end=\"3774\"><strong data-start=\"3378\" data-end=\"3392\">Transvalia<\/strong>, along with the 2025 runners-up, <strong data-start=\"3421\" data-end=\"3443\">Ho\u00ebrskool Kalahari<\/strong>, also finished the day unbeaten.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"3477\" data-end=\"3495\">Kriegler Botha<\/strong> raised his bat for a half-century (57) in <strong data-start=\"3538\" data-end=\"3554\">Transvalia<\/strong>&#8216;s opening 15-run victory over <strong data-start=\"3583\" data-end=\"3595\">Oos-Moot<\/strong> at the <strong>Kovsies Oval<\/strong> on Monday morning. <strong>Divan Knoetze<\/strong>, then, weighed in with 43 in a 30-run win over <strong data-start=\"3741\" data-end=\"3754\">Witteberg<\/strong> at the <strong>Tommix Oval<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3776\" data-end=\"4161\">For <strong data-start=\"3780\" data-end=\"3792\">Kalahari<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3794\" data-end=\"3810\">Louhan Noeth<\/strong> recorded the second-highest individual score of the day with 75 in a six-wicket victory over Goudveld.<\/p>\n<p>His effort was followed by a crucial 57 from <strong data-start=\"3968\" data-end=\"3991\">Strauss van Heerden<\/strong> as the Kuruman outfit edged out <strong data-start=\"4042\" data-end=\"4050\">Trio<\/strong> by three wickets in a tense encounter. <strong data-start=\"4069\" data-end=\"4078\">Noeth<\/strong> added a further 27 runs in that win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summarised scorecards\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day One &#8211;
