{"id":91011,"date":"2026-02-23T08:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T06:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=91011"},"modified":"2026-02-23T08:55:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T06:55:12","slug":"northwood-falls-as-michael-mount-crowned-st-johns-basketball-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=91011","title":{"rendered":"Northwood falls as Michael Mount crowned St John&#8217;s Basketball champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_91025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91025\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-91025 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Michael-Mount-400x255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Mount was crowned the champion of the 2026 St John&#8217;s College Basketball Tournament after defeating the two-time defending champion, Northwood, in the final. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/stjohnscollegeSA\"><strong>St John&#8217;s College on Facebook.<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unpredictability was a key feature of the <strong>St John&#8217;s College Basketball Tournament<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When the dust finally settled on Sunday, <strong>Michael Mount Waldorf School<\/strong> had claimed the u19 Category A title, while <strong>Maritzburg College B<\/strong> won the u19 Category B tournament, and <strong>Saheti School<\/strong> was crowned the champion in the u15 category.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Mount faced a challenging final against the defending champion, <strong>Northwood<\/strong>, who had also won the title in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>After falling behind early in the title decider, Michael Mount lifted their game, gathered steam, and, with some outstanding three-point shooting, charged past <em><strong>the Knights<\/strong><\/em>, on their way to a 65-55 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Mount had demonstrated their capabilities in the earlier rounds of the competition, which included beating previously undefeated <strong>St Charles College<\/strong> in the quarterfinals on Saturday before also ending <strong>King Edward VII<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>(KES)<\/strong> unbeaten run.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/all-star-trio-leads-kes-to-inanda-hoops-title\/\"><strong>KES had won the Inanda Hoops Classic Challenge in October 2025<\/strong><\/a> and had established themselves as a strong title threat at St John&#8217;s, but Michael Mount ended that dream with a heart-stopping 47-45 win.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Basketball Final - Northwood School vs Michael Mounte - St John&amp;apos;s Tournament - 22 February 2026\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NEgJ1CDudIE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Northwood&#8217;s path to the final was meandering, yet intense. In a stunning turn of events, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/defending-champs-stunned-on-day-one-of-st-johns-basketball-tournament\/\"><strong>the two-time defending champion lost twice on Thursday<\/strong><\/a>. That left them with no margin of error. They had to win every game they played from then on, and they rose to that challenge.<\/p>\n<p>After winning a tight play-in game against <strong>Pretoria Boys High<\/strong>, they eliminated <strong>St Stithians<\/strong> in the quarterfinals before ousting <strong>St John&#8217;s<\/strong> in the semi-finals in a rematch of the 2025 title game.<\/p>\n<p>In the bronze playoff, KES romped to a convincing 42-24 win over St John&#8217;s College.<\/p>\n<p>In the u19 Category B competition, Maritzburg College B claimed the title after a highly successful weekend for the <strong><em>Red, Black<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>White<\/em><\/strong>, which included <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/maritzburg-college-reclaims-the-jenny-orchard-basketball-tournament-title\/\"><strong>their first team winning the Jenny Orchard Invitational Basketball Tournament<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>College met St Peter&#8217;s College in the final and scored an emphatic 61-36 win. In the playoff for bronze,\u00a0<strong>St John&#8217;s College B<\/strong> beat <strong>Sacred Heart College <\/strong>38-29.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saheti<\/strong> faced <strong>Hilton College<\/strong> in the u15 final, and scored a comfortable 65-51 win.
