Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/standrewsbloem?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&amp;igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==\"><strong>St Andrew&#8217;s School on Instagram.<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In recent decades, the <strong>St Andrew&#8217;s School <\/strong>has made its mark on the national stage, taking on many of the best teams from <strong>KwaZulu-Natal, the <\/strong><strong>Western Cape<\/strong>, <strong>Eastern Cape<\/strong>, and <strong>Gauteng<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They play with grit and, in the Free State, they&#8217;ve had the number of the redoubtable <strong>Grey College<\/strong> for some time now, including beating their local rivals on the last three occasions they have met across all competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Much like last year, <em><strong>Saints<\/strong><\/em> won both the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/st-andrews-school-wins-free-state-switch-schools-sa20\/\"><strong>Free State<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/saints-goes-back-to-back-as-central-region-schools-sa20-champions\/\"><strong>Central Region<\/strong><\/a> titles of the <strong>Switch Schools SA20 <\/strong>competition.<\/p>\n<p>In last year&#8217;s <strong>Final Showdown<\/strong>, while they didn&#8217;t achieve the results they were chasing, they received the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/bishops-win-schools-sa20-national-title\/\"><strong>Spirit of the Week Award<\/strong><\/a> for the manner in which they played the game.<\/p>\n<p>This year, they&#8217;re determined to improve on their 2025 showing, with the national title being a tasty carrot dangling in front of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shakespeare&#8217;s Hamlet<\/strong> noted that one needs three key ingredients to achieve a goal:\u00a0&#8220;Sith I have cause (reason) and will (desire) and means (resources) to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Saints&#8217; cause and will are clear. Of course, they want to enhance their prosperous cricketing legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Inside their <strong>Lindsay Tuckett High Performance Centre<\/strong>, one of the best indoor cricket facilities in the country, hangs a banner. It celebrates St Andrew&#8217;s winning a national T20 title in 2018, in the forerunner of the Switch Schools SA20, the Coca-Cola T20.<\/p>\n<p>That team, captained by <em><strong>Knights<\/strong><\/em>&#8216; wicketkeeper-batsman, <strong>Garnett Tarr<\/strong>, and featuring Proteas&#8217; fast bowler, <strong>Gerald Coetzee<\/strong>, has set the standard to which Saints&#8217; teams aspire. That banner serves to remind the 2026 side of the stature of the goal that they&#8217;re pursuing.<\/p>\n<p>The current squad is talented and features two matric pupils, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/schools-sa20-profile-fg-botha-st-andrews-school\/\"><strong>hard-hitting batsman FG Botha<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/nikhil-sukraj-st-andrews-school-eyes-the-switch-schools-sa20-title\/\"><strong>leg-spinner Nikhil Sukraj<\/strong><\/a>, who were members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/free-state-khaya-majola-team-named\/\"><strong>Free State u19 Khaya Majola Squad<\/strong><\/a> in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>However, St Andrew&#8217;s campaign won&#8217;t rest on their shoulders alone. The team is laden with all-rounders &#8211; including <strong>Heindr\u00e9 Serfontein<\/strong>, <strong>Jonathan Hickley<\/strong>, and <strong>Erhard Bahrends <\/strong>&#8211; who are capable of delivering match-winning contributions with both bat and ball.<\/p>\n<p>With it now being the Year of the Horse, according to the Chinese New Year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/western-cape-champs-boishaai-headed-to-switch-schools-sa20-final-showdown\/\"><strong>Paarl Boys&#8217; High having knocked out last year&#8217;s national winners, Bishops<\/strong><\/a>, in the second phase, 2026 could be the year of the dark horse, with one of the respected, yet unfavoured contenders going all the way to national title glory.
