{"id":91955,"date":"2026-03-06T12:36:03","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T10:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=91955"},"modified":"2026-03-06T12:36:03","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T10:36:03","slug":"a-stiff-challenge-awaits-talented-rondebosch-boys-high-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=91955","title":{"rendered":"A stiff challenge awaits talented Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_78996\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78996\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78996\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/rondebosch-2025--400x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rondebosch_boys_rugby?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&amp;igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==\"><strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; Rugby on Instagram.<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In recent years, <strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> has been a strong force in schoolboy rugby.<\/p>\n<p>They started last season like a house on fire, defeating <strong>Oakdale Landbou<\/strong>, who went on to enjoy a special season, 10-7 at the <strong>Wynberg Rugby Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<em><strong>Bosch <\/strong><\/em>captain <strong>Josh Neill<\/strong> was selected for the <strong>SA Schools<\/strong>&#8216; side for a second successive season. <strong>Randall-John Davids<\/strong>, <strong>Ismaeel Conrad<\/strong>, <strong>Bulela Mbala<\/strong>, and <strong>Matthew van der Merwe<\/strong> joined him in the <strong>Western Province<\/strong> <strong>Craven Week<\/strong>-winning team, and <strong>Lisekhonikamva Zola<\/strong>, <strong>Shellvon Mabooi<\/strong>, and <strong>David Kadima<\/strong> ran out for the <strong>Western Province XV<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, the Rondebosch rugby pantry remains stocked with talented players. &#8220;We have <strong>Finn Watermeyer<\/strong> (10 1st XV caps in 2025), <strong>Kwaza Gabinga <\/strong>(Grant Khomo captain in 2024), <strong>Anessu Muswandigere<\/strong> (Grant Khomo 2024), <strong>Bertus Versfeld<\/strong> (18 1st XV caps), <strong>Ethan Williams<\/strong> (Academy Week 2025), <strong>Caleb Bell<\/strong> (Academy Week 2025), and<strong> Shelvon Mabooi<\/strong>,&#8221; Head Coach<strong> Clinton van Rensburg<\/strong> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/380228105770160\"><strong>SuperSport Schools Plus<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Van Rensburg&#8217;s coaching team includes forwards&#8217; coach <strong>Joel Carew<\/strong>,\u00a0backs&#8217; coach <strong>Asi Molatana,<\/strong>\u00a0defence coach <strong>Charlie Post,<\/strong>\u00a0strength and conditioning coach <strong>Rikus van der Sandt,<\/strong> head physio Jamie King, and manager <strong>Trevor Edward.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said the school&#8217;s growing rugby culture is reflected in some of the parents: &#8220;We are fortunate to have notable figures in SA rugby with boys in the school, such as <strong>Rian Oberholzer<\/strong> &#8211; CEO of SA Rugby, <strong>Clint Readhead<\/strong> &#8211; Head of Medical in SA Rugby, and <strong>Ashwin Willemse<\/strong> &#8211; former World Cup Winning Springbok.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andr\u00e9 Ross<\/strong>, the chairman of the <strong>Rondebosch Old Boys&#8217; Union<\/strong>, shared the importance of the <em><strong>Bish-Bosch<\/strong> <\/em>derby with <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/rugby\/\"><strong>SuperSport Schools Plus:<\/strong><\/a> &#8220;The two annual Bish-Bosch derbies are the biggest and most eagerly anticipated events of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the Rondebosch 1st XV mostly plays in blue against other opposition, when they run through the schoolboy tunnel onto the<strong> Tinkie Heyns Field<\/strong> for the home derby, they are kitted in white jerseys and Bishops in blue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A cherished and highly respected tradition, [these matches are] the highlight of a &#8216;Bosch boy&#8217;s rugby career.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A whopping 206 matches have been played between these two great schools&#8217; 1st XVs, with Rondebosch winning 86 times and drawing 19 times. In recent times, eight of the last 10 encounters have been won by Rondebosch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like the other southern suburbs coaches, Van Rensburg said the local derbies are especially significant games for &#8216;Bosch: &#8220;Every match for Rondebosch is a massive challenge. Playing in the strongest schoolboy league in the world against SA Schools&#8217; rugby powerhouses week in and week out remains a challenge that we are committed to, but it is tough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are many schools in the province, besides the rugby powerhouses, who are driving their rugby programmes on the fertile grounds of Afrikaans schoolboy rugby culture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We always look forward to our southern suburbs&#8217; derbies, which come with their own unique challenges and pressures.
