{"id":92040,"date":"2026-03-09T09:22:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T07:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=92040"},"modified":"2026-03-09T09:22:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T07:22:28","slug":"moreri-hat-trick-powers-sundowns-win-as-gdl-title-defence-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=92040","title":{"rendered":"Moreri hat-trick powers Sundowns&#8217; win as GDL title defence begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_92042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92042\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92042 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Tebogo-Moreri-400x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tebogo Moreri scored a hat trick in a 5-0 win for Mamelodi Sundowns against Rockefvs. Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tebogo_moreri\/\"><strong>Tebogo Moreri on Instagram<\/strong><\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nike007\/\"><strong>Nike 007.<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the finals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/chiefs-and-sundowns-win-big-in-top-8-finals\/\"><strong>Gauteng Development League (GDL) Top 8 competition<\/strong><\/a> last weekend, the GDL&#8217;s league season kicked off over the weekend, with an abundance of goals raining down across all divisions.<\/p>\n<p>In the u19 division, the defending champion, <strong>Mamelodi Sundowns<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/mamelodi-sundowns-unseats-highlands-park-as-gdl-champ\/\"><strong>who ended Highlands Park&#8217;s two-year reign in 2025<\/strong><\/a>, made a strong statement of intent with a dominating performance against <strong>Rockefvs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sundowns-coach-bergman-emphasises-effort-ahead-of-ts-galaxy-clash\/\"><strong>Kristopher Bergman<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s charges powered their way to a 5-0 victory, demonstrating a strong desire and championship mindset in the early going, which was rewarded when <strong>Liano Snyders<\/strong> found the back of the net within the first 10 minutes, assisted by <strong>Thando Singo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On his way to a hat-trick, <strong>Tebogo Moreri<\/strong> slotted his opener in the 23rd minute, courtesy of an assist from <strong>Sivuziwe Lonzi<\/strong>. Seven minutes later, Moreri made it a brace, again benefitting from a connection and assist from Lonzi.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before half-time, Sundowns put the game to bed. <strong>Kgaogelo Monanyane<\/strong> scored their fourth before Moreri completed his hat-trick in the 43rd minute of the match.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Brazilians<\/strong><\/em> were unable to add to their tally in the second half, but they had convincingly gotten their title defence off to a winning start and bagged all three points on offer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathorus Hyper Academy<\/strong> was one of the entertaining teams in the GDL in 2025, particularly in the second half of the season, where their victories included a win over Sundowns. On Saturday, Kathorus also made a tick in the win column, defeating the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/a-fresh-chapter-unfolds-for-the-school-of-excellence-with-chipcor-developers\/\"><strong>Africa School of Excellence, formerly known as the Transnet School of Excellence<\/strong><\/a>, which is now under the new ownership of <strong>Chipcor Developers<\/strong>, in a high-scoring thriller.<\/p>\n<p>In a challenging match for both teams, Kathorus outlasted School of Excellence 4-3. <strong>Gift Muyambo <\/strong>scored the East Rand club&#8217;s first goal of their 2026 campaign, assisted by <strong>Lefa Radikgomo<\/strong>. <strong>Sizwe Sidu<\/strong> then made it 2-0 with help from <strong>Ayanda Moilwa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Esethu Witvoet<\/strong> successfully converted a penalty to score a third for Kathorus, and Sidu laid on an assist for <strong>Kgothatso Lenkwe<\/strong> to net the winners&#8217; fourth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA)<\/strong>, beaten in the final of the GDL Top 8 by <strong>Kaizer Chiefs<\/strong> last weekend, took on <strong>Panorama<\/strong> and battled their way to a hard-fought 3-2 win.<\/p>\n<p>It was 1-1 at halftime, with <strong>Bandile Sithole<\/strong> scoring for RESA, assisted by <strong>Brian Molefe<\/strong>. After an hour, <strong>Nceba Jozela<\/strong> netted the Vereeniging club&#8217;s second goal, with Molefe again providing the assist. He, then, made it a hat-trick of assists, setting up Sithole for his brace in the 72nd minute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siwelele<\/strong> (formerly SuperSport United) secured a 2-0 victory over <em><strong>EzeNkosi<\/strong><\/em>, <strong>Jomo<\/strong> <strong>Cosmos<\/strong>.
