Photo:<strong> Arno Schutte<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The final weekend of March typically signals the start of a vibrant and action-filled festival season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This year is no exception, with several major boys&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hockey festivals set to get underway in various parts of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <strong>Founders Hockey Festival<\/strong> takes place at <strong>Queen&#8217;s College<\/strong> in Komani, while the <strong>Belgotex Sport Coastal Cup<\/strong> will be hosted at the <strong>Riverside Hockey Club<\/strong> in Durban. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meanwhile, the <strong>Nomads Hockey Festival<\/strong> will be hosted by<strong> Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> <strong>(PBHS)<\/strong> from 28 to 30 March. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KingEdwardVIISchool\">KES Photography Club<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gauteng teams<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pretoria Boys High (PBHS) and their neighbours and rivals, <strong>Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Seunskool<\/strong> <strong>(Affies)<\/strong>, will represent the <strong><em>Noordvaal <\/em><\/strong>region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both have made slow starts to the season. This past weekend, PBHS went down 2-3 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">against<strong> St Stithians College<\/strong>, while Affies showed grit and fight in their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/paul-roos-downs-affies-while-parel-vallei-and-durbanville-lay-down-a-marker\/\">2-4 loss against Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/a><\/strong> in Stellenbosch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The festival will provide the teams&#8217; coaches, <strong>Jacques Klopper<\/strong> (PBHS) and <strong>Jaydon Lincoln<\/strong> (Affies), with a chance to bounce back while testing out combinations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Johannesburg will be represented by <strong>Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong>, <strong>King Edward VII<\/strong> <strong>(KES)<\/strong>, and <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeppe has made a bright start to coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/a-new-era-gareth-heyns-eager-to-keep-the-jeppe-machine-rolling\/\">Gareth Heyns&#8217;<\/a><\/strong> tenure, winning two of their three matches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They defeated <strong>St Benedict&#8217;s College<\/strong> 3-0 in a gripping contest before playing out a nail-biting 2-2 draw with <strong>St Stithians<\/strong>. Last Friday, the boys from Kensington beat <strong>St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda<\/strong> 4-1, but coach Heyns will be the first to admit there is still plenty of work to be done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">KES, similar to Jeppe, has a new face in the dugout in the form of <strong>Siya Sityana<\/strong>, who led Jeppe to an unbeaten season in 2025. <em><strong>The Red Sticks <\/strong><\/em>beat St John&#8217;s College 4-0 last week, with <strong>Blaine Candy<\/strong> netting a hat-trick and <strong>Andrew Arouca<\/strong> joining him on the scoresheet.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92206\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92206\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-92206\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/JWSP-sfb-J1303933-400x278.jpg\" alt=\"Hilton College captain, Robert Burman\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hilton College captain Robert Burman will be influential for his side at Nomads. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JustinWaldmanSportsPhotography\">Justin Waldman Sports Photography<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">KwaZulu-Natal teams<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Teams from KwaZulu-Natal will be out to make a big statement at Nomads. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Hilton College<\/strong>, <strong>Kearsney College<\/strong>, and <strong>Maritzburg College <\/strong>will fly the province&#8217;s flag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hilton showed character in their season opener, coming back from 0-1 down to beat <strong>Westville Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> 2-1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That&#8217;s the type of grit and mentality that coach <strong>Damian Kimfley<\/strong> will demand at Nomads. He will look to experienced players like <strong>Tadi Hove<\/strong> and captain <strong>Robert Burman<\/strong>\u00a0to lead the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To start their season, Kearsney, coached by the highly regarded <strong>Keegan Pearce<\/strong>, went down at <strong>Clifton College<\/strong> before scoring successive victories over <strong>St Charles<\/strong> and <strong>Glenwood<\/strong>, so their confidence will be on the up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On Saturday, they powered to a 7-2 win over Glenwood on the Mason Astro, so their sharpshooters&#8217; eyes appear to be in. Standing in their way at Nomads will be Jeppe, Affies, KES, and St John&#8217;s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maritzburg College has flown under the radar, but they&#8217;ve played some impressive hockey early in the season, moving the ball impressively around the park.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After snatching a 2-2 draw with Clifton, College went 0-1 down at halftime against Westville on the past weekend, but then rallied to score a 3-1 win. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SelborneCollege\">Selborne College Media Club.<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eastern Cape teams<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Selborne College<\/strong> and <strong>Grey High School<\/strong> will carry Eastern Cape hopes in Pretoria. In 2024, both were unbeaten when Maritzburg College hosted Nomads. They&#8217;ll face a tough challenge trying to match those sparkling records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grey missed out on Nomads last year because they were on a tour of <strong>The Netherlands<\/strong>, while Selborne endured an up-and-down 2025 campaign. They, however, concluded it as a much-improved team, which was playing some very good hockey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coaches <strong>Andrew Beynon<\/strong> (Grey) and <strong>KJ Friend<\/strong> (Selborne) will be pleased with the preparations they&#8217;ve had before Nomads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both sides shook off the early-season rust at the <strong>Tony Godding Festival<\/strong> in East London, where Grey defeated Selborne, Eldoraigne, and St Andrew&#8217;s School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Selborne, meanwhile, picked up wins over <strong>Jim Fouch\u00e9 <\/strong>and <strong>Sasolburg<\/strong> before sharing a thrilling 3-3 draw with <strong>Grey College<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92208\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92208\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-92208\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/652768963_964352239255724_5030768010607111038_n-400x335.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"335\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92208\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grey College will be aiming to claim some big scalps at the Nomads Hockey Festival. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greycollege\">Grey College on Facebook<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Free State &#8211; Grey College\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Grey College<\/strong> will feel it&#8217;s their time to shine in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Headmaster <strong>Braam van Wyk<\/strong> has taken over as the 1st XI&#8217;s head coach after <strong>Dalan\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>Phillips<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> returned to <strong>Pearson High<\/strong>. Van Wyk will <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be assisted<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/its-grey-vs-grey-in-bloem-while-queens-hosts-selborne\/\">Jayden Leech<\/a><\/strong>, who played for the side just two seasons ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grey College has a massive opportunity to stake a claim as one of 2026&#8217;s top teams, but they face a stiff schedule, which includes taking on Pretoria Boys High, Affies, Maritzburg College, and Hilton College. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The retention of key players, including <strong>Raphael Kambanis<\/strong>, <strong>Wian Griesel<\/strong>, and SA Schools&#8217; star <strong>Neilyandro van Schalkwyk<\/strong>, will help their cause. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In their last outing, coach Van Wyk&#8217;s side drew 2-2 with <strong>Ho\u00ebrskool Waterkloof<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They have been a little loose on defence at times early in the season.
