Photo: <strong>Khosi Mmutle<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If day one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/five-players-to-watch-at-the-nomads-hockey-festival-2\/\">Nomads Hockey Festival<\/a><\/strong> proved anything, it&#8217;s that the forthcoming season will be fiercely competitive and no team should be taken lightly.\u00a0On Saturday, the opening day of the festival, preconceived ideas about teams were blown out of the water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Catch the action LIVE on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/Nomads2026\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There were shock results, unbeaten records shattered, and high-scoring encounters that left many hockey enthusiasts at <strong>Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> open-mouthed in shock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wynberg Boys\u2019 High<\/strong> delivered the first hammer blow by edging out <strong>Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong> 1-0 in the opening game.<\/p>\n<p>It was a hotly contested battle, decided by a late goal from <strong>Zachariah Booley<\/strong>. Before the fixture, Jeppe had not tasted defeat in over 20 months after going on an impressive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/jeppe-boys-achieve-rare-unbeaten-season\/\">unbeaten run in 2025<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In their second match of the day, Jeppe bounced back and brushed aside <strong>Kearsney College<\/strong> 2-0, courtesy of goals by <strong>Kade Lottering<\/strong> and <strong>Tshimologo Mogale<\/strong>. Wynberg, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong> to keep their unbeaten record at the festival intact.<\/p>\n<p>Another side that impressed was Gqeberha&#8217;s <strong>Grey High School<\/strong>. Under the guidance of coach <strong>Andrew Beynon<\/strong>, they produced a thrilling attacking masterclass to overrun <strong>King Edward VII<\/strong> <strong>(KES)<\/strong> 8-4 before getting past the hosts 2-1 later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>Against KES, the experienced <strong>Keegan Le Roux<\/strong> and <strong>Logan Meyer <\/strong>netted twice each, while <strong>Dante Elkington<\/strong> and<strong> James Chree <\/strong>also got their names on the score sheet.<\/p>\n<p>There were also debut goals for <strong>Michael Gillies<\/strong>, the brother of <strong>Kerrin Gillies<\/strong>, who is currently tearing it up at the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/oranje-waterkloof-collegiate-dominate-at-st-marys-waverley-festival\/\"> St Mary&#8217;s Waverley Festival<\/a> <\/strong>for <strong>Collegiate Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>. <strong>David Stevenson<\/strong> also scored his first goal for the side.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92536\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92536\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-92536\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/KhosiMmutle06-400x266.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There was nothing to separate Affies and Hilton College as the sides played out to a 2-2 draw. Photo: <strong>Khosi Mmutle<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The hosts, PBHS, showed promise and resilience on Saturday.\u00a0In their opener, they defeated a never-say-die <strong>Grey College<\/strong> side in a humdinger of a clash thanks to a hat-trick by <strong>Bongai Vuyeqeba<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marko Bosch<\/strong> struck twice for the Bloemfontein boys, and they had an opportunity to equalise in the final chukka when they were awarded a penalty corner. The injection was mistrapped, however, and that chance went begging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong> showed strong character to come from behind to snatch a 2-1 win over <strong>Maritzburg College<\/strong>. <strong>Matthew Ireland<\/strong> and <strong>Scott Bray<\/strong> were on target for the Johannesburg school in a welcome win after they went down to KES a week ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hilton College<\/strong> struggled somewhat, but they weren&#8217;t beaten. They played to a goalless draw with <strong>Selborne College<\/strong> before holding <strong>Affies<\/strong> to a 2-2 draw. <strong>Kean Cornelissen <\/strong>and <strong>Rudolph Thiart <\/strong>scored for Affies, while<strong> Ben Wilson<\/strong> slotted two cracking goals for Hilton.<\/p>\n<p>Day two&#8217;s action will kick off with a clash between Affies and Grey High.
