Photo: Anton Wannenburg\/King Price<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Paarl Gimnasium<\/strong>\u2019s first rugby team is gathering steam in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The <em><strong>Gimmies<\/strong><\/em> secured an emphatic 51\u201324 victory over the <strong>Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Seunskool<\/strong> <strong>(Affies)<\/strong> of Pretoria in their <strong>King Price Derby Series<\/strong> clash on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the game again on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/SuperSportSchools2026\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/SuperSportSchools2026\">www.supersportschools.co.za<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The visitors&#8217; fullback, <strong>Thomas Saunders<\/strong>, scored a hat-trick of tries in the victory. His first try, in the 17th minute, which opened Gimmies&#8217; account, was also named the <strong>Suzuki Game Changer Moment<\/strong> of the match.<\/p>\n<p>The team from Paarl led 22\u201312 at the break. It was a tightly contested match until the 25th minute, when Affies&#8217; inside centre, Juan Ferreira, received a yellow card after attempting to intercept a pass near the tryline.<\/p>\n<p>Referee <strong>Ansius Vermeulen<\/strong> also awarded a penalty try, which put Gimmies into a 14\u20137 lead. The <em><strong>Wit Bulle<\/strong> <\/em>responded immediately from the kick-off, with a try by wing <strong>Dandr\u00e9 Brink<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Paarl Gimnasium\u2019s scrumhalf, <strong>Mickyle Booise<\/strong>, was on top of his game once again, and his try from a blindside break off a scrum gave his side a 22\u201312 lead at the break.<\/p>\n<p>Booise represented the SA Schools A-side last year and will be aiming to upgrade that cap to a full SA Schools selection later this year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rugby - Affies vs Paarl Gimnasium - King Price Derby - 11 April 2026\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Ycpo8nHbvw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the first 15 minutes of the second half, a blitzkrieg of four tries lifted Gimmies into a commanding 44\u201312 lead by the 50th minute.<\/p>\n<p>Saunders only needed four minutes in the second half to complete his hat-trick, while <strong>Ethan Barker<\/strong> (inside centre) and <strong>Dirk Hugo<\/strong> (flank) also crossed the whitewash.<\/p>\n<p>Gim captain Ethan Barker was named <strong>King of the Match<\/strong> for his performance. He will, however, agree that the foundation for his side&#8217;s victory was laid up front, with an exceptional performance by flank <strong>Corn\u00e9 Niemand<\/strong>, who was well supported by Hugo, eighthman <strong>Hendr\u00e9 van Zyl<\/strong>, and the locks, <strong>Bernhardt Schulze<\/strong> and <strong>Jean Dreyer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Affies fought back late in the game, with outside centre <strong>Estian Marx<\/strong> scoring a brace of tries.<\/p>\n<p>Although it was a large victory, it was not Paarl Gimnasium\u2019s biggest win over Affies. Their 35-point margin of victory in a 38-3 win in 1973 was larger, as was a 40-7 win in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>It was only the fifth time in their history that the Wit Bulle had conceded 50 points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scorers: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paarl Gimnasium 51 (22) \u2013<\/strong> Tries: Thomas Saunders (3), Mickyle Booise, Ethan Barker, Dirk Hugo, Malan Mostert, Penalty Try.
