Two of the most successful teams at the Standard Bank Hibbert Shield<\/strong>, Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong> (PRG) and South African College High School<\/strong> (SACS)<\/strong>, kept their title hopes alive on Saturday, day two of the tournament, at Grey High School<\/strong> in Gqeberha.<\/p>\n

The Western Cape duo advanced to the quarterfinals after topping their respective pools with strong performances in the final matches of the round-robin pool fixtures.<\/p>\n

Paul Roos delivered a dominant display in their last pool match, overpowering Selborne College<\/strong> 8-1. SACS was pushed hard but secured a 4\u20132 victory over a gritty Garsfontein <\/strong>outfit.<\/p>\n

They were joined in the last eight by St Stithians College<\/strong>, who finished second in Pool B, and Westville Boys’ High<\/strong>, the runners-up in Pool C.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, Parel Vallei, Grey High, Jeppe High School for Boys, <\/strong>and Bishops<\/strong> booked their spots in the quarterfinals (click here<\/a><\/strong> to read more on those matches).<\/p>\n

RECAP<\/strong><\/p>\n

SACS entered their Pool C clash against Garsfontein needing a win after a 2\u20132 draw with Westville and a commanding 7\u20130 victory over Grey College<\/strong> on Friday.<\/p>\n

Coach Sam Holmes<\/strong>‘s side started slowly and conceded a goal in the first chukka, with Leon Venter<\/strong> finishing a well-worked penalty corner variation.<\/p>\n

The defending champions responded well. Litha Kraai <\/strong>struck from a penalty corner, and the reliable Mohlodi Maseko<\/strong> slotted a blinder to give the Cape Town school the lead.<\/p>\n

Cameron Cordeiro<\/strong> extended the SACS’ advantage to 3-1, but Stian Wissing<\/strong> pulled one back for Garsies<\/strong> <\/em>to set up a tense finish.<\/p>\n

Daniel de Wet <\/strong>scored the defending champs’ fourth to ensure SACS bagged an important win, which secured first place in their pool.<\/p>\n

Their reward is a quarterfinal showdown with their southern suburbs’ rivals, Bishops, in a repeat of last week’s Edgars Friday Nite Lights clash<\/a><\/strong>, which SACS won 4-2.<\/p>\n

Paul Roos<\/strong> was in a different boat in Pool B, having already booked their place in the quarterfinals before their last group game against Selborne College. With a 7-1 win over Clifton College<\/strong> and a 5-1 defeat of St Stithians<\/strong>, PRG boasted a very healthy goal difference, and they padded it even further with a\u00a0masterclass in their last group assignment.<\/p>\n

They were ruthless from the get-go, and Selborne was made to chase shadows for the majority of the clash. PRG made a whopping 30 circle entries, took 16 shots, and made eight of them count.<\/p>\n

Caleb Cilliers<\/strong> scored a hat-trick while Louis Kriel ba<\/strong>gged a brace. Other goal-scoring contributions came from Danesh Titus<\/strong>, Daniel de Waal<\/strong>, and the skipper, Seth Paterson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Daelin Hendricks<\/strong> scored Selborne’s solitary goal, but they finished bottom of the Pool B log.<\/p>\n

Paul Roos takes on Grey High<\/strong> in the quarterfinals. The clash will be a repeat of last Friday’s match, which the hosts won 2-1<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Other matches<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the two Western Cape sides progressed, St Stithians College <\/strong>and Westville <\/strong>joined them in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n

Saints<\/strong><\/em> needed to beat Clifton to stay in the running for the Hibbert Shield, and a Jason Joiner<\/strong> brace, alongside a strike by Christian Bernhardi,<\/strong> got the job done for coach Pat Owgan<\/strong>‘s charges.<\/p>\n

Westville, despite losing 1-2 to Grey College<\/strong>, advanced with four points from their three outings.<\/p>\n

Sunday’s action starts bright and early, with the first quarterfinal being played at 7:30.<\/p>\n
