The Johannesburg schoolboy hockey scene will come to a standstill this week when the annual Aitken Cup<\/strong> kicks off on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The prestigious event, which brings together 16 of Jozi\u2019s<\/strong><\/em> top hockey-playing schools, will be hosted at St Stithians College<\/strong>. It runs until Sunday, 17 May.<\/p>\n

The A-section<\/strong> of the tournament promises yet another spectacular event following last year’s showpiece, which Jeppe High School for Boys won after beating Saints 4-2<\/a> <\/strong>in a pulsating final at the University of the Witwatersrand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Both outfits will be among the favourites, with St David’s Marist Inanda<\/strong>, Parktown Boys\u2019 High<\/strong>, and St John\u2019s College<\/strong> also eager to challenge for the title.<\/p>\n

Jeppe has won the event a whopping 21 times since its inception in 1977. Their quest to defend the title begins with matches against their Pool A opposition – Monument<\/strong>, Northcliff<\/strong>, and Trinityhouse Rand Park Ridge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There’s plenty on the line for all four sides. Monnas<\/strong> <\/em>and Trinity occupied the last two positions last year, so they’ll be eager to improve and climb the standings, while Northcliff will want to give a good account of themselves.<\/p>\n

Pool B will be contested by the hosts, Saints<\/em><\/strong>, St Benedict\u2019s College<\/strong>, Noordheuwel, <\/strong>and Linden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Saints are brimming with confidence heading into the clash after wins over St Alban’s College and Linden last weekend.<\/p>\n

Home-ground advantage is a real factor in schoolboy hockey, and St Stithians, led by coach Pat Owgan<\/strong>, will aim to use it to their advantage.<\/p>\n

St Benedict’s and Noordheuwel will be tricky opponents, considering how the pair have played this season, while Linden is aiming to hit its stride.<\/p>\n

Parktown Boys’ High<\/strong>, who have won the Aitken title 11 times, will be in Pool C and contesting it against St David’s, Randpark High<\/strong>, and Redhill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

St David’s missed out on the bronze medal last year after going down 0-4 to King Edward VII<\/strong> (KES)<\/strong>, while Parktown finished in seventh place. KES is absent from the event this time, though. They’re heading to KwaZulu-Natal for their traditional derby against Westville Boys’ High<\/strong>, and they’ll also take on Northwood<\/strong>, bringing together two of the season’s most impressive teams.<\/p>\n

Pool D features St John’s College<\/strong>, Helpmekaar Kollege<\/strong>, Beaulieu<\/strong>, and HeronBridge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At first glance, St John\u2019s and Helpmekaar would be favoured, but Beaulieu and HeronBridge will be eager to make their mark as they\u2019re playing in the A-section for the first time.<\/p>\n

The action begins on Thursday at the Saints Blue AstroTurf<\/strong> when Trinity locks horns with Northcliff while Jeppe takes on Monument.<\/p>\n

Matches will also be played at St David’s Marist Inanda and St John’s College.<\/p>\n
