It’s now more than ten years since the Wit Bulle<\/strong><\/em> of the Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Seunskool<\/strong> of Pretoria last beat Grey College<\/strong> of Bloemfontein.<\/p>\n

The two First XVs will face each other on Saturday at 14:00 in a King Price Derby Series<\/strong> clash on the rugby field for the 48th time since 1923.<\/p>\n

Both schools have made a huge contribution to the success of South African rugby. Affies’ old boys include Fourie du Preez<\/strong>, Wynand Olivier<\/strong>, Pierre Spies<\/strong>, and RG Snyman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Grey has produced a long list of Springboks, among them Frans Steyn<\/strong>, Bismarck du Plessis<\/strong>, Ruben Kruger<\/strong>, Naka Drotsk\u00e9<\/strong>, Andre-Hugo Venter<\/strong>, Jan Serfontein<\/strong>, and Johan Goosen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Wit Bulle’s last victory over Grey in 2015 (29-18) was achieved in Bloemfontein, with centre Louritz van der Schyff<\/strong> leading the charge. Other players from that year’s Affies’ team who have carved out sports’ careers for themselves after school include Ruben van Heerden<\/strong> (Stormers), Ruan de Swardt<\/strong> (Proteas cricket), and Schalk Erasmus<\/strong> (Toyota Verblitz).<\/p>\n

Affies thoroughly thrashed Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong> 78-10 last week. The Wit Bulle have clearly found their feet in the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

The bad news for supporters of the team from the Jacaranda City is that Grey College has also shifted into a higher gear since suffering three consecutive defeats earlier in the season. The team from the City of Roses defeated Noordheuwel<\/strong> (34-12) and Jeppe (54-14) during the Absa Wildeklawer<\/strong> tournament, and beat Paarl Boys’ High<\/strong> 31-21 last week.<\/p>\n

The Wit Bulle also already measured their strength against Boishaai<\/strong> <\/em>this year. They beat the Paarl side 40-37, thanks to a try in the dying moments by replacement centre Estian Marx<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If Affies wants to secure a victory, they will need to keep Grey’s loose trio of Niel du Randt<\/strong>, Henru Erasmus<\/strong>, and Xander de Beer<\/strong> in check. Moreover, the Bloemfontein team’s locks, Alexi Tyropolis<\/strong> (captain) and Prestan Bennett<\/strong>, have also packed down on the side of the scrum for the First XV.<\/p>\n

This means that Grey has more than enough stamina in its engine room up front.<\/p>\n

Affies’ captain and lock, Martin van Niekerk<\/strong>, has had an excellent season so far this year in the loose and also in the lineouts. His lock partner, Reubenne Vlok<\/strong>, also enjoys getting stuck into the thick of things up front.<\/p>\n

The Wit Bulle have some of the most dangerous wings in South African schools’ rugby this year. The team’s fullback, Joshua Gouws<\/strong>, also served on the wing earlier this year, while Dandr\u00e9 Brink<\/strong> and Dehan Botha<\/strong>\u00a0possess plenty of power and pace.<\/p>\n

Affies’ coaches, Ruan Jacobs<\/strong> and Jaco Koch<\/strong>, have also decided to select Rico du Plessis<\/strong> at outside centre for the clash. When given the opportunity this year, Du Plessis has done a fine job of unlocking Gouws, Brink, and Botha on the attack.<\/p>\n
