“Dié dag is n baie goeie inisiatief.

  • Junior Springboks shuffle team for vital French clash

South Africa Under-20 coach, Dawie Theron, has shuffled his team for their vital Pool A match at the IRB Junior World Championship against hosts France on Thursday evening at La Roche-sur-Yon.

The match kicks off at 20:45 and will be televised live on SuperSport.

The Junior Springboks are currently top of their pool with 9 points from two matches and need a victory to book themselves a spot in next week’s two semi-finals.

For the match against JWV hosts France, the South Africans will field a new centre combination, a changed halfback pairing and two different props.

Justin Geduld suffered a mild knee ligament sprain against England and will be rested for this match. Depending on his progress, he will be considered for the next match.

Ungerer had a dental procedure during the week and because he also played in the two previous matches, it was decided to give him a well-deserved rest.

Handré Pollard moves from inside centre to fly half. Rohan Janse van Rensburg moves into the No 12 jersey alongside his Vodacom Blue Bulls team mate Dries Swanepoel, who will now wear the No 13 jersey.

Robert du Preez (The Sharks) moves to the bench to make place for Pollard at No 10 while his provincial team mate Hanco Venter earns his first start of the JWC campaign in place of Stefan Ungerer (also The Sharks).

The new props are Sti Sithole (DHL Western Province) and Marné Coetzee (The Sharks) and the pair replace Luhan de Bruin and Andrew Beerwinkel. Meanwhile, Devon Martinus (prop, Vodacom Blue Bulls) and Percy Williams (scrumhalf, MTN Golden Lions) are both included in the match 23 for the first time.

De Bruin was cited for an incident in the previous fixture against England and was not considered for selection for this match while SARU is appealing the sanction.

Coach Theron said it was necessary to change the team after the same match fifteen did duty against the USA and England.

“We played a tough match against England so it is important that we bring in some fresh legs. This match against France is a crucial one for both teams. We cannot afford to lose because there are still a number of teams who can grab the four semi-final spots.

“We know we are going to face a very brave and passionate French team. They are under pressure because of their loss against England and also because of the expectations of their home fans. They will be highly motivated so we will have to be strong and ready for a huge battle,” said Theron.

The SA Under-20 team to face France on Thursday, 13 June in La Roche-sur-Yon:

    15. Cheslin Kolbe (DHL Western Province)

    14. Luther Obi (Platinum Leopard)

    13. Dries Swanepoel (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    12. Rohan Janse van Rensburg (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    11. Seabelo Senatla (SARU contracted)

    10. Handré Pollard (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    9. Hanco Venter (The Sharks)

    8. Ruan Steenkamp (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    7. Jacques du Plessis (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    6. Roelof Smit (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    5. Dennis Visser (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    4. Irné Herbst (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    3. Marné Coetzee (The Sharks)

    2. Jacques du Toit (Toyota Free State Cheetahs)

    1. Sti Sithole (DHL Western Province)

    Replacements:

    16. Andrew Beerwinkel (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    17. Mike Willemse (DHL Western Province)

    18. Jannes Kirsten (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    19. Aidon Davis (EP Kings)

    20. Percy Williams (MTN Golden Lions)

    21. Robert du Preez (The Sharks)

    22. Jesse Kriel (Vodacom Blue Bulls)

    23. Devon Martinus (MTN Golden Lions)

    Some interesting tournament statistics:

Five teams are still unbeaten at JWC 2013 in defending champions South Africa, New Zealand, and last year’s semi-finalists Wales and Argentina plus Ireland.

Seven of the 12 teams at JWC 2013 can, theoretically, still reach the semi-finals.

South Africa continue to head the try-scoring sheets at JWC 2013 with 19 after two rounds. New Zealand are the only other team into double figures, while Fiji and USA remain the only teams yet to have crossed the whitewash.

Seabelo Senatla, the South African flyer, took his try tally to six with a first-half brace against England in La Roche-sur-Yon. Senatla is now just two tries short of the record number of tries in a single JWC which is currently held by All Blacks Zac Guildford (2009) and Julian Savea (2010).

Robert du Preez, the Junior Boks’ fly half, continues to head the conversions chart with eight, two more than his opposite number on day two, Henry Slade of England.

Plaasvervangers: Emmanuel Morowane, Andrew Acton (albei Jeppe), Günter Janse van Vuuren (Monument), Nyaska Tarusenga (St Benedict-kollege), Brendon Rick (Florida), Erik Fourie (Monument), Fernando Kermis (Florida).

  • Coca-Cola Craven Week celebrates 50 years

Coca-Cola Craven Week celebrates 50 years

The greatest rugby tournament for schoolboys in the world hits a milestone this year as it celebrates half a century of the best Under-18 rugby this country has to offer. This festival of rugby will strike away any winter blues as it explodes onto the field at Polokwane, Limpopo from 8 – 13 July.

The very first Craven Week took place in 1964 in East London, the year of the South African Rugby Board’s 75th Jubilee and was designed to be a celebration of schoolboy rugby. At the time Danie Craven said, “The Board wants the game played in the right spirit. That includes: attacking, adventurous, open, constructive rugby, without regard to result, and without deviating from the game. If our schoolboys can be imbued with such a spirit, it will seep through to our national approach, to the advantage of all.”

Indeed, many a Coca-Cola Craven Week star has gone on to become a Springbok hero like Schalk Burger senior (1973) and Schalk Burger junior (2001) running on field for Western Province and Boland respectively. Other well-known legends include John Smit, Percy Montgomery and Victor Matfield who have all played over 100 games for the Boks, as well as Francois Pienaar, Joost Van Der Westhuizen, Bob Skinstad, Ashwin WIllemse, Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira and Pat Lambie.

That historic first kick-off in 1964 was a somewhat haphazard affair as for many provinces it was a novelty to choose a junior provincial team. Some provinces had been picking teams to represent them for years while others, like Western Province, had never. Western Province asked its long- standing schools to nominate players and cobbled together a team that did remarkably well, much better than some of the expertly chosen teams. Fifteen provinces sent teams to East London and out of this inaugural event came names like André de Wet, Andrew van der Watt, Mike Jennings and Joggie Jansen who went on to play rugby for South Africa.

In 1974 for the first time ever, a national schools team was chosen from the best players at Craven Week. Since then, a SA schools team has been chosen every year and though it is still considered a festival of schoolboy rugby and as such there is no official winner, there is no doubt that the last match on the last day is regarded as the final and that the team that wins that are considered the Coca-Cola Craven Week champions.

The next big change to the tournament came in 1980 when Danie Craven forced the organisers to open the festival to players of all races. This forward-thinking move took place fourteen years before apartheid officially ended. In 1987 the Project Tournament was introduced which used a 50/50 quota system and had 16 teams taking part by 1991. The best team from this Project Tournament then went on to play at Craven Week with Springbok players Justin Swart and Etienne Fynn emerging, and Louis Mzomba who became the first Xhosa-speaking international referee. Fynn went on to be the first player of colour chosen for SA Schools at the 1990 Coca-Cola Craven Week. By 1991 the original 16 Coca-Cola Craven Week teams had doubled into 30 and the diversity of those years saw many a great player emerge due to the inclusion of the Western Province League and SA Project team, exceptional players like Chester Williams and Cornel Wiese.

Today the concept of Craven Week has expanded into a spectacular Coca-Cola Youth Weeks aimed at identifying and nurturing talent within South Africa that includes: Under-13 Craven Week where young lads discover a taste for provincial rugby; Under-16 Grant Khomo Week named after a remarkable man who achieved excellence in the game of rugby and as an administrator against all odds; Under-18 Academy Week which is aimed at development and transformation; and LSEN Weeks designed for Learners with Special Education needs which itself has been going since 1982 and serves as a platform for youngsters with learning, visual and hearing impairments and epilepsy to compete. A top LSEN XV team is then chosen and goes on to compete at Academy Week.

So from the hula-hooping, flower power, grooviness of the sixties all the way to the tech-savvy, speediness of 2013, Coca-Cola Craven Week has endured and entrenched itself into the hearts and minds of the South African sporting-mad public. Over half a century 243 Springboks have graduated through the Under-18 Coca-Cola Craven Week and not only is it a festival celebrating schoolboy rugby but has also become its holy grail – an event that is held in high regard both by the players and the many “trainspotters” of the rugby world.

This special 2013 edition of the Coca-Cola Craven Week tournament will see exactly 440 of the country’s top school rugby players take part in 20 teams that includes sides from Namibia and Zimbabwe. For those who can make it to Polokwane (just two and half hours from Pretoria) get ready for not only a feast of rugby, but also a momentous occasion in South Africa’s history. This is “where heroes are made” and the hottest, young talent South Africa has to offer is showcased. For all those too far to travel, SuperSport will be televising the games so you too can witness the greats of South Africa amongst us.

    Puntemakers:

Vrystaat o.18 61 (21) – Drieë: EW Viljoen (2), Marius Louw (2), Henry Immelman, Stephen Rautenbach, Ali Mgijima, Refiloe Rampeta, Patrick Mbangi. Doelskoppe: Rautenbach (8). Griffons o.18 3 (3) – Strafdoel: Shaun Reynolds.

Vrystaat Kiewiete 40 (14) – Drieë: Lee-Hane Ontong, Dean Tucker, Jan Serfontein, Henco Pieterse, Jean Janse van Rensburg, Mark Brown. Doelskoppe: Tucker (3), Janus Sander (2). Oos-Vrystaat 24 (7).

Griffons o.16 20 (12) – Drieë: Kabelo Moleko (2), Gerald Ekron. Doelskop: Luchiano James. Strafdoel: James. Vrystaat o.16 26 (12).

  • Junior Springboks overcome tenacious England

South Africa Under-20 scored a hard-fought 31-24 victory over a tenacious England in La Roche-sur-Yon in France on Sunday evening to register their second consecutive victory at the IRB Junior World Championship (JWC).
The Junior Springboks, who are the defending champions, consolidated their place on top of the standings in Pool A (9 points) and now have one more group match to negotiate before the play-offs. They play tournament hosts France at the same venue on Thursday.

South Africa raced into a 21-0 lead after an impressive start and will perhaps feel disappointed that they did not manage to finish in a more commanding fashion. Flying wing Seabelo Senatla, scorer of four tries against the USA last week, was denied another hat trick of tries after his third effort was disallowed for an earlier infringement.

A fourth try and the accompanying bonus point would have confirmed South Africa’s place in the semi-finals with a match to spare.

They got off to a flying start and were leading 21-0 after 30 minutes of play in the first half, with the Junior Springboks pinning England in their own half with some clever positional kicks and crunching tackles.

Senatla scored two tries, one out wide after a good backline movement and another with a clever interception, while flyhalf Robert du Preez slotted a conversion and two penalties to keep the pressure in England.

The English however started to get into the match towards the end of the first half and had a try disallowed after a knock-on in the build-up. They were however rewarded for their persistence when Sam Hill (centre) crossed the line after a good offload from flyhalf Henry Slade.

Slade slotted the conversion to make the score 21-7 at halftime. A few minutes after the restart England scored again when Elliot Stooke (lock) dotted down in the corner and Slade converted from a difficult angle to reduce the score to 21-14.

But the SA U20 struck back when imposing flanker Jacques du Plessis crashed over in the corner for the team’s third try, while pivot Du Preez added a conversion and a penalty to keep England at bay.

But England fought back with some hard forward surges and they were rewarded when Stooke and Henry Purdy (reserve prop) crashed over for tries in the corner. Slade kept his side within striking distance with his accurate kicking boot, adding two conversions and a penalty.

Irne Herbst (SA U20 lock) and Tom Price (England U20 replacement flanker) were both yellow carded towards the end after a scuffle.

Dawie Theron, the SA Under-20 coach, said afterwards he was glad for the win but disappointed that his team could not secure a valuable bonus point.

“We made a very good start but did not manage to capitalise on it. This was a very good win against an English team that have won the Under-20 Six Nations and have played much longer together as a team.

“I am disappointed that we did not keep our discipline in the second half, but there were also some decisions made which were out of our control and influenced the play in the second half. We will now regroup and prepare for our next match against France, who will no doubt be a difficult customer in front of their home fans,” said Theron.

    Scorers:

South Africa U20 (21) 31: Tries: Seabelo Senatla (2), Jacques du Plessis. Conversions: Robert du Preez (2). Penalties: Du Preez (4)
England U20 (7) 24: Tries: Sam Hill, Elliott Stooke, Hendry Purdy. Conversions: Henry Slade (3), Penalty: Slade

  • Junior Boks retain starting team for England

Dawie Theron, the South Africa Under-20 coach, has kept his starting fifteen unchanged for the IRB Junior World Championship Pool A fixture against England on Sunday.

There is however one change on the bench, with lock Jannes Kirsten (Vodacom Blue Bulls) replacing Kwagga Smit (flank, MTN Golden Lions).

The Junior Springboks’ second pool match will kick off at 16:45 in the Stade Henri Desgrange in La Roche-sur-Yon.

South Africa’s runway 97-0 victory over the United States on Wednesday has placed them top of Pool A with five points. The three pool winners and the best placed pools runner-up will advance through to the semi-finals.

Theron, who led the Junior Springboks to their first JWC title in 2012, explained that the coaching staff resisted the temptation to change the starting fifteen because they wanted to maintain the continuity.

According to Theron England is a strong, physical side and his team will have to front up for the full 80 minutes.

“Their core skills are very good and we will play against a very well-prepared team. They have good structures in place, many of the players came through the Premiership academies and they play on a regular basis together as a team,” said Theron.

The Junior Springboks coach added the approach of his team will be to build on their momentum from the first game:

“We will have to be disciplined and play with the same energy as the team showed against the United States.”
