Hugenote (Wellington) clawed their way to 26-25 victory over Swartland, in Malmesbury, on Saturday.

Rockies‘ flyhalf, De Wet van Aswegen, delivered yet another standout performance for his side, contributing 15 points, made up of a try, two conversions, and two penalties, but he was left frustrated as Swartland came up short in their last home game.

Van Aswegen deserves credit, however. He put together an outstanding season.

Hugenote kept it simple, but they executed their game plan perfectly. To quote Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs: “Vision is just a multiplier. It’s execution that’s worth millions.”

The Wellington school’s tight five won their scrums and lineouts, while their loose forwards were quick to the breakdown. Their backline made the gain line on most of their phases by restricting long and risky passes. They stuck close together and ran good lines to force line breaks.

In a very free flowing game, the hosts will feel as though they could have been more clinical when on attack. They stayed in the fight, as they have done throughout the season, and it looked as if they would pull off a win, but it was not to be.

Down south, in Mossel Bay, Nico Malan, wrenched a 24-17 win away from Hoërskool Punt.

The visitors’ loosehead prop, Waldo Krige, was a juggernaut that the Punt defence struggled to contain. He ploughed his way over the line for two tries, which proved pivotal.

With Nico Malan’s muscle controlling matters up front, their backs had little work to do.

Flyhalf, Leighton Lawrence, was the only backline player to make it onto the scoresheet, which he did by kicking two conversions.

It was a tight game, with Punt delivering some brilliance of their own. They, too, showed a physical edge, and captain and eighthman, Steven Terblanche, and inside centre, Devandrè Wagenaar, earned themselves tries thanks to their strong ball carrying.

For much of the game, it appeared that Punt would pick up a home win, but, like Swartland against Hugenote, they’ll be left wondering about what might have been. They’ll go back to the drawing board to see where they can improve.

A staggering 44 goals were scored in seven matches featuring Western Cape sides over the past weekend.

It was two days filled with upsets and top performances, with high-quality hockey entertaining those who were on the sidelines or watching at home on the SuperSport Schools App.

Parel Vallei High School (PV) and Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) completed their campaigns on Friday night with contrasting victories.

PV welcomed Pearson High, from Gqeberha, to Somerset West and bagged an emphatic 7-2 victory in front of a packed crowd.

The hosts were favoured heading into the clash, having beaten Pearson 4-0 in 2024. They endured a horrible start, however, going 0-2 down within the opening five minutes after a fiery start from the visitors.

Rocked, PV, nonetheless, stayed composed, quickly regrouped, soaked up the atmosphere, and went on to deliver one of their best performances of the season.

They were clinical in front of goal, punishing Pearson almost every time they got a sniff, while making goal scoring look easy.

Nathan Nissen was in the form of his life and netted a hat-trick, while Luca Jordan, Luka Meets, and JP van der Walt got in on the scoring action.

SA u16 stalwart, Stephan Malan, also netted. He landed in Cape Town at 18:15, returning from representing the SA u16A team in the Allister Fredericks Africa Challenge in Johannesburg.

It was the perfect send-off for the PV matriculants and wrapped up a solid season for coach Michael van Rensburg and his troops.

While PV ended on a high, Paul Roos celebrated a battling 2-1 win over feisty Grey College in Bloemfontein.

Coach Michael Baker‘s boys were made to work extremely hard but got the job done in a hostile environment.

Callum Van Oudtshoorn opened his side’s tally in the second chukka, but Grey College responded through Matthias Visser just before halftime.

PRG skipper Christo Swanepoel bagged the game winner in the third chukka and had a chance to add a further goal when his side was awarded a penalty stroke, but his shot went wide.

That miss didn’t cost PRG, though, as they held firm to seal a prized win away from home.

In other matches, South African College High School (SACS) defeated Rondebosch Boys’ High 7-1.

SACS captain, Jo le Roux scored in the first chukka, but the score remained unchanged into the halftime break.

In the third chukka, SACS upped the ante. Aiden Hughes made it two before Litha Kraai extended his side’s lead by converting a penalty stroke.

Then, in the final chukka, the visitors scored a whopping four goals, with Kraai netting three times before Mohlodi Maseko got his name on the scoresheet.

Wynberg Boys’ High scored a thrilling 3-2 win over Bishops Diocesan College in another southern suburbs’ rivalry game.

The side, coached by Ben Wiley, claimed victory on the back of goals from Ethan Daniel, captain, Zachary Gibbon, and Noah Laubscher.

Stellenberg High School delivered a polished performance to beat Durbanville 6-2 in their interschools meeting.

Fichie Leeus maak geskiedenis in Vrystaat-liga

Hilton College made the most of hosting the Primo Big 10 – the annual football tournament featuring KwaZulu-Natal’s top 10 all boys’ schools – by lifting the prestigious trophy for the first time on Zungu Field, on Sunday. It was a victory they fully deserved.

After their 2-0 win in the final over Northwood, they’ll join Michaelhouse, Maritzburg College, and Glenwood in having their name engraved on the trophy.

A strong work rate, coupled with a sharp attacking edge, took Hilton to three wins on Sunday – in the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final – much to the joy of a large crowd of home supporters.

Along the way, in their three playoff games, they scored seven goals while conceding only two.

Their day of delight began routinely enough with a 2-0 win over Kearsney College. Their semi-final, against Westville Boys’ High, who had ousted the defending champion, Glenwood, in the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout, was anything but.

End-to-end, it raised the adrenaline on and off the field, drawing the crowd into the contest. Hilton’s supporters sang loudly and proudly when their team went 3-1 up before a late goal from Westville ensured a thrilling finish. It ended 3-2 and with that the Mancosa KZN Coastal A-League champion was eliminated.

Hilton, then, faced Northwood for the silverware.

The Knights impressed throughout the tournament. Well organised, hard-working, and tough as teak, they were made to grind out two wins on Sunday to reach the title decider.

Their metamorphosis, from a team in trouble in the second term’s KZN Coastal A-League, to a cohesive, dangerous unit has been hugely impressive.

In the quarterfinals, Northwood met the KZN Inland A-League champion, Maritzburg College, with whom they had drawn 1-1 in pool play on Saturday. There was little give in either defence. This time, they shared a goalless draw, which sent the match to a penalty shootout.

After seeing their first penalty kick saved, the Northwood Knights kept their cool and converted every other spot kick to oust Maritzburg College in the quarterfinals. Photo: Brad Morgan.

When College captain CJ Sukraj pulled off a save of Northwood’s very first spot kick, the Red, Black, and White appeared to be on their way to the semi-finals, but the Knights kept their cool, battled their way back, and eventually won in sudden death, taking a 7-6 victory.

In the semi-finals, they took on Michaelhouse, a team that had found the back of the net regularly, led by the tournament’s top goal scorer, Asande Nkosi, who struck six times in total. ‘House had downed DHS 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

There was little to separate the sides, but the Knights, with typical grit, found the goal that mattered to book their place in the title game.

Their forwards, as they did throughout the event, impressed with their defensive work, putting huge pressure on the opposition’s defenders and making exiting from the back a challenge.

With the title on the line, a fantastic, highly motivated team effort spurred Hilton to victory in the final, with striker Efe Ozcan stealing the spotlight.

On Saturday, the anniversary of the passing of his father, he had been desperate to pay tribute to his dad by scoring. He did, from the penalty spot, in a 1-1 draw with DHS. In the title decider, he continued to do his late father proud.

The first goal was all about Ozcan’s hustle. Closing down the Northwood defence, he turned over possession deep in the opposition’s territory before racing into the box where he fired off the opening goal.

Wheeling away, he charged towards the large gathering of Hilton supporters to join them in an enthusiastic celebration.

Then, in the second half, Ozcan pretty much sealed the deal by emphatically converting a penalty to make it 2-0. From there, Hilton managed Northwood’s attacking efforts well.

Their midfielders put in massive shifts to close down the Knights, while the home side also continued to threaten, especially down the flanks, where they showed off plenty of pace and skill.

With the silverware secured, Efe Ozcan was a popular choice for Man of the Match.

In the playoff for ninth, Clifton College fell behind against St Charles, who ripped them apart with a spectacular defence-splitting long ball, which totally exposed the Clifton ‘keeper.

Clifton, though, looked like different team to the outfit that had struggled on day one, and they deservedly equalised off a rebound to earn a share of the spoils.

A ruthless performance, sprinkled with moments of individual brilliance and fantastic goals, lifted Collegiate Girls’ High to an impressive 5-0 victory over Clarendon High School for Girls in East London.

Their Hyundai Friday Nite Lights clash was the final game of the season for both schools, so bragging rights were at stake.

Heading into the match, Clarendon hadn’t lost a game in five outings, while Collegiate was battle-hardened, having recently been in action against the country’s leading teams in Bloemfontein, at the Fairtree Super 12 Tournament, where they finished seventh.

The girls from Gqeberha are known for their quick starts, and they duly delivered in the first chukka.

After winning back possession from the push-back, they attacked with vigour and intent and were awarded a short corner from their first circle entry.

Kerrin Gillies made no mistake from the first castle, smacking the ball past Soyama Dzengwa for the game’s opener.

The visitors had more to come, though, and they earned another PC after Gemma Bower’s storming run into the D found a Clarendon foot.

Instead of going route one, Gillies played a smart one-two with vice-captain, Tayla Paxton, with Gillies providing the finish to make it 2-0.

Collegiate continued to dominate and moved the ball smoothly, building play from the back through Anna Porter, Jade Grobler, and Cassidy Williams.

Up front, they also troubled Clarendon, but the home team’s shot-stopper Dzengwa was having the game of her life between the goalposts.

Collegiate’s third goal came in the second chukka when Eden Jade Oliver tapped in at the far post to extend her side’s lead.

Clarendon had their moments but, under duress for most of the contest, had to rely mostly on counterattacks, which were always quickly doused by coach Michael Abrahams‘s troops.

Early in the third chukka, Kate Brennan scored a scorcher to take the game even further away from Clarendon.

Then, fittingly, the final nail in the coffin came from Gillies in the fourth quarter and it was special.

After receiving the ball just inside the 23, she skilfully dribbled past five Clarendon players before calmly guiding the ball past Dzengwa to complete her hat-trick.

The win meant Collegiate ended their season with only one defeat all year long in the Eastern Cape, against DSG Makhanda, in June.

    Other matches

While Hyundai Friday Nite Lights’ action gripped East London, there were other matches played on Saturday around the province.

Hudson Park High travelled to Qonce to take on Kingsridge High School for Girls. Coach Jerry Snyman’s team made it a rewarding trip by bounding to a 5-0 win. With that convincing victory in the record books, they’ll head into their final outing against Cambridge High full of confidence.

Stirling High, meanwhile, completed their season on a high, scoring a 2-1 win at Merrifield College.

    RESULTS

    Collegiate 5-0 Clarendon
    Hudson Park 5-0 Kingsridge
    Stirling High 2-1 Merrifield College

Exceptional Erwee leads Grey to victory over Maroon Machine

It took an exceptional performance and at least three moments of brilliance by flyhalf, Darius Erwee, to hand Grey College a narrow 26-25 victory over Paul Roos Gimnasium from Stellenbosch on Saturday.

These two sides faced each other in Bloemfontein for their King Price Derby Series clash. Catch all the action again on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The last moment of brilliance will be spoken about for years to come, as Erwee launched a perfectly placed kick-pass to winger Eddie Mabena with about a minute to go on the clock. Mabena launched himself off the ground, flying through the air to gather the ball to score his second try of the match.

This try only brought Grey within one point of Paul Roos at 24-25. Erwee still needed to keep his calm and slot the conversion from near the touchline to secure a famous victory.

This was undoubtedly the best performance by Erwee this season. His first moment of brilliance was when he regathered a chip-kick and, with a perfectly executed pass, sent winger Benjamin van den Berg over to score Grey’s second try.

He also had a hand in Mabena’s first try after slipping through half a gap and slipping a chicken-wing pass to the winger to score.

Grey College went into half-time with a 19-15 lead. After the lead changed three times in the first half.

When Paul Roos’ outside centre, Tiaan Basson, scored in the 53rd minute to give his side the lead, it seemed as if the momentum had shifted in favour of the visitors. A couple of minutes later, flyhalf, Travis Pheiffer, slotted a penalty from 50 metres out to extend his side’s lead to 25-19.

Before the drama unfolded in the City of Roses in the 68th minute, with Erwee’s brilliant foot pass to set up Mabena’s second try.

For Paul Roos their standout player on the day was their scrumhalf, Jan-Jan Nel, who kept the home side busy with his sharp breaks around the scrums. In the pack of forwards hooker, Lehan Barnard, had an outstanding game.

For Grey, their two props, Marinus Oosthuizen and David Hayidakis, also produced noteworthy performances.

Both had players missing out on being part of this big occasion due to their duties for the South African u18 side in the International Series. Paul Roos’ two captains through the season Altus Rabe (hooker) and Gert Kemp (loose forward).

The side from Bloemfontein had four players in action for the national side in AJ Meyer (lock), Ethan Adams (outside centre), Lamla Mgedezi (fullback) and JG Badenhorst (tighthead prop).

    Scorers:

Grey College 26 (19) – Tries: Eddie Mabena (2), Alexi Tyropolis, Benjamin van den Berg. Conversions: Darius Erwee (3). Paul Roos Gimnasium 25 (15) – Tries: Luke Kent, Lehan Barnard, Tiaan Basson. Conversion: Travis Pheiffer. Penalty: Pheiffer.

  • Potch is Bowl se halfeind-mekka

Parel Vallei overcomes Pearson, Brakkies tames the Tigers

Parel Vallei made impressive strides during the 2025 season, finishing it with an outstanding win over Pearson. Photo: Parel Vallei on Instagram.

Parel Vallei High shed their underdog tag and ended their season on a high, with a 20-10 victory over Pearson, in Somerset West, on Saturday.

Flyhalf Stefan Niemann‘s two conversions and fullback Shudley Rhoda‘s two penalties made the difference between the sides.

The Bulldogs were led by the physicality of eighthman Brad Brown, who was an influential performer for the side throughout the season.

It’s not just about the quantity of tackles he makes. It’s the quality. He has a photo album’s worth of crunching hits. At times, Brown single-handedly kills the opposition’s momentum, and his presence motivates his fellow forwards. On Saturday, his contribution helped limit the visitors only 10 points.

Pearson has had some wonderful battles against the best that the Eastern Cape has to offer in 2025, and their record includes a win over the province’s best this season, Queen’s College.

Pearson flyhalf, Keano Beling, is the all-round package. Yet his try, conversion, and penalty were the sum total of the damage that the boys in green and black could inflict on PV.

The season is not yet done for Pearson. They have a shot at redemption next weekend at home, where they’ll face a stiff challenge from Die Brandwag.

In another fierce contest, Brackenfell won 18-9 at home against Tygerberg

It was a physical battle, full of brutal hits and an all-out battle at the breakdowns.

It needed a valiant defensive effort from Brakkies to keep the Tigers from crossing their try line. Brackenfell, though, was able to dot down twice.

Their first try came from the brute power of eighthman, Wade Fortuin, who made the gain line on almost every carry he lugged. When he found himself within a few metres of the try line, the Tigers’ defence was unable to stop his powerful drive.

Brakkies’ second came from wing Migile Carelse, whose electric speed out burned the Tigers out wide.

    Scorers

Parel Vallei 20 – Tries: Brad Brown, Noah Enyang. Conversions: Stephan Niemann (2). Penalties: Shudley Rhoda (2); Pearson 10 – Try: Keano Beling. Conversion: Keano Beling. Penalty: Keano Beling.

Brackenfell 18 – Tries: Wade Fortuin, Migile Carelse. Conversion: Junior Louw. Penalties: Junior Louw (2); Tygerberg 9 – N/A.
