  • Maritzburg College to face Candies without the muscle of Aiden Botha

Rambo Kubheka helped Maritzburg College to a win over Westville on Reunion Weekend in 2023. College will seek a winning return against Michaelhouse in their 2024 Reunion clash on Saturday.

Pretoria Boys’ High hosts Maritzburg College this time around and will be hoping to ride the home support to victory on Brooks Field.  It has been a challenging season for the Candies, but they’ve hung tough while playing an extremely demanding schedule.

Maritzburg College dominated the first meeting of the sides on Goldstone’s, winning the encounter 43-15.

Last year, College won home and away against Boys High, including an emphatic and exciting 47-15 victory in Pretoria. Kick-off is at 13:20.

Last weekend, the Red, Black and White lost a sensational match to Affies, going down 37-39. The Pietermaritzburg school came within 30 seconds of upsetting the Wit Bulle, but showed in that contest that when they’re on their game they can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

College’s flyhalf James Slevin, has had a good season thus far and will want to continue with his good form, which included a 100 percent goal kicking record against Affies. In the Boys High camp, Seth Venter misses out and is replaced by Kwanda Mabuza in the number 10 jersey.

A notable absentee from the College lineup is SA Schools’ tighthead Aiden Botha. He’s replaced by Alande Ngubane in the front row.

    The teams:

Pretoria Boys High: 15 Itu Baloyi, 14 Ntsako Ndlovu, 13 Motheo Dimpe, 12 Tyler Mason, 11 Ompfuna Tsanwani, 10 Kwanda Mabuza, 9 Tumisho Motswi, 8 Katlego Shebu, 7 Akin Akingbola, 6 Panyaiotis Ellinas, 5 Tshepiso Shikhibana, 4 Stephen Adams, 3 Ofentse Moeng, 2 Thapelo Mphela, 1 Jeffery Singo.

  • Jeppe and KES have it all to play for in Jozi Derby

Rugby in Gauteng features three big return fixtures this weekend. It’s a chance to level matters for last time’s losers, but it’s also an opportunity for their opposition to exert their dominance this season.

Catch all of the action live on SuperSport Schools.

In Johannesburg, King Edward VII (KES) will be aiming to go two from two against their long-time rivals Jeppe High School for Boys. Kick-off on the Reds Field is at 13:15.

In their first meeting of the season, KES claimed a 38-28 victory at Jeppe. Since then, however, the Kensington school has been on a roll, winning six matches in succession.

The previous clash, on 27 April, featured a great grapple up front between the packs. Both sides pack a good punch, with KES being led by SA Schools’ captain and hooker Esethu Mnebelele, while flank Kebotile Maake also joined him in the national team. Jeppe had the powerful front-ranker André Poulton included in the SA Schools A side, along with their 8th-man Risima Khosa.

Another one of the matchups to keep an eye out for on Saturday will be that between the scrumhalves, Regan McGurk, of KES, and Talent Sithole, of Jeppe.

Behind the scrums, there is plenty of talent, too. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo was the third member of the Red Army to crack the SA Schools’ nod, while Jeppe’s outside centre Kuthadzo Rasivhaga was also selected for the green and gold.

The high-profile game is in the capable hands of Golden Lions Union referee Christo Erasmus.

In their last outing, last weekend, Jeppe stormed to a fine 16-point win victory over Monument, while KES battled their way to a hard-fought 18-5 win at Pretoria Boys High School.

Parktown Boys’ High School faces a hungry Northcliff, who won 16-15 at Northcliff when the sides met on 6 April. On Saturday, they’ll be motivated to prove that victory was not a once-off.

Northcliff has shown for a while now that they are a side which is willing to compete with the bigger traditional schools and they’ve produced some good results, including a 20-10 win over Dinamika 20-10 last weekend.

Vusi Msibi, from the Golden Lions, takes charge of the contest.

    The teams:

King Edward VII: 15 Tristan Maugeri, 14 Mbuso Methula, 13 Sky Segal, 12 Olunje Mehlomakulu, 11 Haniel Monkoti , 10 Vusi Moyo, 9 Regan McGurk, 8 Chinedu Amadi, 7 James Kobrowisky, 6 Kebotile Maake (vc), 5 Michael Bownes, 4 Thomas Beling, 3 Nathan Frank vd Merwe, 2 Esethu Mnebelele (c), 1 Connor White.

Gauteng’s premier girls’ hockey tournament, the Pullen and Howell, returns this weekend for the first round of the 2024 edition of the competition, which will feature 73 teams battling for supremacy at nine venues.

The annual tournament, founded by Rob Pullen and Ros Howell in 2006, has gone from strength to strength since its first edition.

The Pullen section refers to the u18A and u18B sections, while the u16A and u16B sections compete for the Howell Trophy.

In its first edition, 18 years ago, Johannesburg’s St Andrew’s School for Girls won the Pullen Trophy, while St Mary’s Waverley claimed the Howell Trophy.

This year’s tournament will run for four days, starting on Saturday 20 July, with further mid-week action on Tuesday, 23 July, and Thursday, 25 July. The final is scheduled for Saturday, 27 July.

The competition includes schools from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Krugersdorp, Eastern Gauteng, and Vereeniging.

The defending champions St Stithians Girls’ College will be eyeing a repeat in the Pullen Trophy. They’ve been drawn in Pool A and face Northcliff, St Mary’s Waverley, and Dr EG Jansen.

Pool B features this year’s All Girls Festival champions Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria (AHMP) in action against Noordheuwel, Holy Rosary, and Kingsmead.

Coach Omari-Pienaar Geyer‘s Waterkloof girls will be keen to challenge for the title. They’re in Pool C, where they’ll need to get past Monument, Beaulieu College, and one of the hosting schools, St Andrew’s School for Girls.

Hoërskool Garsfontein will be favoured in Pool D. They’re up against Helpmekaar Kollege, Roedean School, and Trinity Randpark Ridge.

The B Section promises to be very competitive and upsets, inevitably, will happen.

Eldoraigne are among the favourites. Standing in their way in Pool C are Hugenote, Linden, Germiston’s Assumption Convent School, and Alberton.

Menlopark, in Pool D, will be out to dominate against St Dominic’s, Redhill, Marias Viljoen, Bryanston, and Midstream College.

The Pullen u18 A Section will be played at St Mary’s Waverley, Roedean, Kingsmead, and St Andrew’s.

Meanwhile, the B Section takes place at Parktown High School for Girls, Redhill, Holy Rosary School, Linden, and Fourways.

In the Howell trophy, last year’s champs, St Mary’s Waverley, are in Pool D. If they are to successfully defend their title, they will first need to see off Marias Viljoen, Northcliff, and Steyn City.

There is no clear favourite in pools A, B and C.

The action in the A Section, kicks off with a crucial clash between Affies and St Stithians College at Fourways High School at 08:45. Saints will also face Monument and Kempton during the course of the day.

  • St Stithians and Affies out to defend their Pullen and Howell titles

St Stithians and Affies out to defend their Pullen and Howell titles

St Stithians and Affies will be defending the u18 and u16 titles respectively when the 2024 edition of the Pullen and Howell Hockey Tournament gets underway on Saturday.

The event was founded in 2006 by two stalwarts of the Southern Gauteng hockey scene, Rob Pullen and Ros Howell, and it brings together schools from Johannesburg and Pretoria, and a number of other towns.

Looking ahead to the competition, Pullen, who is the Director of Sports at Kingsmead College, told SuperSport Schools Plus: “The preparation for all teams is quite different. Some schools have just come back to school a week or two ago, and others have been training right through.

“Schools, like Kingsmead, were in exams, so we didn’t get to train. It’s a bit of a disadvantage, but it’s one of the things we have to live with. But I think what is exciting is it’s a prestigious event, with 73 teams, and it is a big opportunity. We might have to look at [including] a C section next year.

“What is great is that the players who went to the provincial tournaments recently are all back, so it will be a big opportunity for some of the schools to set up and see how well they can participate this week.

“It’s going be exciting and it is probably going to be one eight or nine teams who can win this tournament in both sections.”

The 2023 Pullen champions, St Stithians, will open their challenge against Dr EG Jansen, while the Howell champions Affies, will begin their quest to defend their title against Saints.

Pullen says the supersized tournament presents a wonderful opportunity for the girls to challenge themselves, interact with others, and make friends in the sport.

“For me, it is always an opportunity to give kids another way to play with school friends and to play matches, so I am looking forward to a great week of hockey,” he reckoned.

The games will be streamed live on the SuperSport Schools app and DStv Channel 216.

Pullen said the livestreaming is a great treat for sports lovers. “I think we are lucky with SuperSport Schools. It gives a wider opportunity for people to watch if they cannot be at the venue and to record and watch it all over again.

“I think we are very fortunate from a sporting point of view that every parent can get to watch it, whether it’s live or recorded or streaming, so we are very chuffed with that,” he concluded.

  • Vryburg kan vanjaar driekuns in SDC Noordvaal Cup behaal

    FOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

Junior Boks finish Championship on positive note

Junior Springbok head coach Bafana Nhleko praised his players’ dedication and character as they beat Wales to finish their 2024 World Rugby U20 Championship campaign on a positive note in Cape Town on Friday.

With their pack of forwards setting the tone, the Junior Springbok regained some pride when they beat Wales by 47-31 (half-time 19-5) in their seventh-place playoff.

The South Africans scored seven tries – six of them by the forwards – with livewire No 8 Sibabalwe Mahashe and team captain Zachary Porthen (prop) scoring a brace of five-pointers each.

There were still a few soft moments, but overall, the Junior Boks can be satisfied with their performance, probably their best of the Championship, as they really made a step up after disappointing results against Argentina and England.

The Junior Boks’ direct approach laid the platform for the winning performance as they led 19-5 at the interval, and although they let in a couple of tries after the break, they continued to apply pressure with some impressive attacking rugby to finish the tournament on a winning note.

Speaking afterwards, Nhleko praised the character of the team to bounce back after two difficult weeks, which saw them ending on the losing side three times in as many games.

“We are disappointed with our campaign, but I must give credit to the boys, I thought they showed great character after a difficult time,” said Nhleko.

“They did well today, created good opportunities within the plan and our execution was also a lot better despite some errors. The players showed a lot of dedication and worked hard during the past few months together.

“I am happy we could finish with a good game, although not what we wanted but this is a moment in their careers – if not their entire lives – they have a lot to look forward to and I want to wish them well for their future careers.”

A clearly pleased Porthen said he was glad they could deliver a good display in their final outing: “It felt good to give a performance like that and to finish the tournament in a high note. I think the win is a reward for the hard work the group continued to put into our preparations.

“We wanted to show that we were better than our recent results. The results didn’t go our way the past few weeks, but I am nevertheless proud of this group,” added Porthen.
