  • EP, Boland into u16 SASHOC National Week semis, champs miss out

Eastern Province A cruised into the semi-finals of the u16 SASHOC National Week on Monday afternoon after a comfortable victory over KwaZulu-Natal Inland B in Bloemfontein.

EP impressed in their 5-1 win. It took them just two minutes to get onto the scoresheet, with Anga Madaka netting, and less than 10 minutes later it was 2-0, thanks to a penalty corner goal from James Chree.

Logan Goddard-Ford increased the Eastern Province lead to 3-0 at the break, but Uyanda Magudulela responded in the third chukka for Inland. Another Goddard-Ford goal, plus one more from regular scoring contributor Keegan Le Roux, made it a convincing four-goal win.

With that victory, Eastern Province also eliminated the defending champions Western Province A – who had beaten them 3-0 in their first game – from the semi-finals.

They both finished with 12 points, but EP enjoyed a better goal difference. Their reward will be a final four showdown with KwaZulu-Natal Inland A. Boland A also picked up 12 points, but they finished top of Pool A with the best goal difference of the three semi-final contenders.

KZN Inland A completed their Pool B assignments with a perfect record of five wins from five games.

On Monday, they broke open a 2-2 tie with KZN Coastal A in the third chukka to claim a 3-2 victory after a back-and-forth contest.

Inland’s Siwaphiwe Mthembu got his team off to a flying start with a goal within the first two minutes, but Luc Boyall levelled for Coastal in the second chukka. Before it was up, however, Thandanani Zuma restored Inland’s lead.

It lasted only two minutes. Keegan de Jager was on target from a penalty corner, and it was 2-2.

The winning goal came from Liyemikhaya Sishi shortly after half-time. Despite five goals being scored in 33 minutes, there were no more to come and Inland claimed the KZN honours.

Meanwhile, Southern Gauteng A punished KZN Coastal B, rolling to a 4-0 win, and Luka Meets starred with five goals as Pool A table-toppers Boland made light work of Southern Free State A, crushing them 7-0.

On Tuesday, the Bolanders will do battle with Coastal A in the semifinals at the University of the Free State.

Eastern Province and Border claimed big wins in the first round of the u18 Girls Week staged at Jeppe High School in Johannesburg on Monday.

EP scored 15 tries in their 99-5 win over Free State, with wingers Lukhanye Lolo (five tries) and Girly Tembani (three) proving especially potent. Flyhalf Micayle Hendricks contributed a try as well as 12 conversions to finish the game with 29 points.

Border proved too strong for the Leopards, running in 16 tries over the course of the 96-5 victory. Lock Zeze Gcaza and inside centre Semi Maliwa scored two tries apiece.

Earlier in the day, Western Province and the Golden Lions delivered impressive attacking performances in their big wins over Zimbabwe and the Griffons respectively.

Limpopo Blue Bulls rebounded from a seven-point half-time deficit to beat the Sharks 15-12, while another tight contest between the Pumas and Boland was eventually edged 20-19 by the Cape side.

The Blue Bulls also started with a win as they kept the Valke scoreless in their 20-0 victory – the only team on the opening day to keep a clean sheet.

  • No surprises as top four book semifinal spots

Boland A on their way to a 1 - 1 draw with Eastern Province A. Credit: TeamPhotoSAKwaZulu Natal Coastal A, Western Province A, Eastern Province A, and Boland A, punched their tickets to the semifinals of the u16 SASHOC National Week girls’ event on Monday in Bloemfontein.

The four teams dominated their pools, with three of them remaining unbeaten.

Keamogelo Baakaleng scored her first goal of the tournament as Coastal A swooped to claim first place in Pool A with a 1-0 win over Western Province A. In Pool B, Eastern Province A fought out a 1-1 draw with Boland A.

Western Province A’s loss to Coastal A was their first of the tournament. The KZN side, Eastern Province A and Boland A are all yet to lose, and all sport records of four wins and one draw.

In a battle of two Pool A powerhouses, Baakaleng’s 43-minute strike broke the deadlock. Heading into the match, Western Province A, the defending champions, looked like the team to beat in their group. They had scored 14 goals, 10 of which were field goals, and conceded only three while going unbeaten.

Coastal A, meanwhile, did not look as menacing in the D. They had scored nine goals on their way to three wins and one draw. However, they had a better defence and had, in fact, not conceded a single goal in the competition. It was, therefore, a battle of the best defence in the Pool A going up against the best strikers in the group. The team with the best defence triumphed.

Coastal A will next face Boland A in the semi-finals, while Western Province A will go toe-to-toe with Eastern Province A.

Pool B’s action on Monday had a similar slant, with the penthouse dwellers fighting it out for the top spot on the last day of group matches. They provided a thrilling contest.

Both sides were already guaranteed a place in the next round when they squared up, but there was no letting up from either team as they gave it all they had.

Before the match, Eastern Province’s goal difference was better by only a single goal. After their 1-1 draw, that proved enough to earn them first place in the pool.

The game began fantastically for Boland, with Nicola van der Merwe striking in the third minute to give her side the lead. It was her third goal of the tournament.

The Western Cape side held on to their slender advantage for 25 minutes, but Lucy Holderness then scored her fourth goal of the tournament to level matters.

That goal tied Holderness with four other players – Raffael Abrahams, Chanette van Vuuren Jansen, Jana Prinsloo, and Asanele Zuma – who occupy second place on the tournament’s goal scoring chart. Holderness’s team-mate, Kerrin Gillies leads the way with five goals.

Day four was not only about the log leaders, but it was also about the basement dwellers in both groups.

In Pool A, KZN Coastal B faced Southern Free State A. Coastal B has endured a trying campaign in which they have conceded 23 goals and scored only three in reply. Two of those three came in their final group match, which they lost 2-5. Southern Free State A’s five goals helped them complete the pool stage with a goal difference of 0.

Boland B and Border A, who anchored Pool B, played to a 0-0 draw, which left both with negative goal difference.

Like Coastal B, Boland B has managed only three goals in the tournament. However, their defence has been little less porous. They conceded 15 goals, for a goal difference of -12.

Border, on the other hand, struggled as much as Coastal B on the defence, also giving up 23 goals. At the other end of the field, they mustered only two goals. And that’s why they finished last in the group.

    RESULTS

    Boland B 1-3 Southern Gauteng B
    Southern Gauteng A 6-0 Border
    Boland A 1-1 Eastern Province A
    Western Province A 0-1 KZN Coastal A
Southern Free State A 5-2 KZN Coastal B
    Northern Blues A 3-0 KZN Inland A
    Border 0-0 Boland B

  • ISRF Day 2 – Kearsney goes big amidst mostly low scoring games

After a day’s rest, the second day of the u18 Independent Schools Rugby Festival (ISRF) got underway on Monday at St Alban’s College with some interesting matchups on the cards.

St David’s Marist Inanda came away with a hard-fought 16-0 win over Clifton College in the opening match of the day.

After a slow start in the first half, during which they kicked a single penalty, they added a try, a conversion and two more penalties from flyhalf Luca Cabion after the break.

Cornwall Hill College put up a valiant fight against St Stithians College, taking the game down to the wire, but Saints emerged as 7-0 winners, with Tyler Maclellan the lone try scorer. Despite heavy pressure from Cornwall, the Saints’ defence refused to buckle.

The Kearsney Stayers XV dominated against St Benedict’s, storming to a 79-5 victory in which they shackled the Bedfordview boys and ran riot when in possession. The KZN school was unrelenting, and they executed their tactical plays well to make the most of their numerous scoring opportunities.

St Charles College maintained their unbeaten run at the festival, picking up a tough 17-12 win over St Andrew’s College. Wing Radley Isaacs scored an excellent try to seal the deal for Saints, darting through the flailing St Andrew’s defence. The Eastern Cape side scored a try on the final whistle, but it wasn’t quite enough to snatch the win.

CBC Boksburg shocked St Andrew’s School, winning by a margin of 10 points, with their powerful front row leading the way. In another closely contested match, they picked up a 15-5 victory.

For the most part, low scoring has been a feature of the festival, and the winning score was as low as it could get in the clash of Woodridge College and Uplands College, with Woodridge slotting a single penalty to win 3-0.

St John’s College clung on for a 14-14 draw against the Blue Bulls Development side in the second last match of the day. In a see-saw contest, Gerald Van Wyk, scored the last try of the match to level the scores with 10 minutes to play. The Bulls pushed hard for victory, but St John’s maintained a disciplined defence, starving the development side of space, to keep them out.

As the sun began setting over the Highveld, St Alban’s took on a spirited Hilton College in the day’s last match. With a clinical performance, which included a strong running game, Hilton cantered to a 38-7 victory.

The visitors were in control throughout the game and offered very limited opportunities to the hosts. While the scrums were evenly contested, a barrage of first half points left St Alban’s with a mountain to climb to get back into the match.

The final day of the festival takes place on Wednesday, 3 July. Matches will be played concurrently on three fields to allow for an early finish so that the teams are able to depart early for home.

SA Rugby, Engen ready to fuel another 200k young players

SARugbySmallThe 2024 edition of the nationwide grassroots, Get Into Rugby (GIR) programme targeted at children aged six to 13 is officially underway and heads to the Free State province on Thursday, 18 July.

A festival event, two days before the world champions’ Test Match against Portugal in Bloemfontein, will take place to officially mark the return of the Engen-sponsored Get Into Rugby season.

The grassroots rugby initiative saw 244 788 boys and girls play the game across all nine provinces of the country in 2023, touching the lives of 114 281 boys and 130 507 girls, who might previously have never experienced organised sport, let alone rugby.

The programme also offers young, aspirant rugby coaches, both male and female, an opportunity to develop their rugby coaching skills – a key aspect that aligns with Engen Sports’ values of creating a holistic platform for youth sports development.

Engen Brand & Sponsorship Manager, Tsholo Tiro, said that Engen was looking forward to another season of impacting and contributing to the growth of rugby in South Africa through the programme.

“The Engen Get Into Rugby programme is quite important to Engen due to its unique ability to reach children at the grassroots level,” said Tiro.

“Over the years, sport has proven to be a fundamental aspect of the growth of children. As proud sponsors of this programme, Engen takes pride in contributing to a unique platform that encourages not only sport development, but the holistic development of the children to ensure that rugby and society benefit from well-groomed future rugby players.”

The festival in Bloemfontein will be visited by Springbok players to add inspiration and impetus to the young players, while Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby emphasised the importance of providing new experiences and opportunities to young people.

“The Get Into Rugby programme has successfully introduced hundreds of thousands of children to rugby and sport over the many years and we’re grateful for Engen’s continued support,” said Oberholzer.

“This programme is the first rung on a ladder which leads to our men’s and women’s Springbok teams. But, as much as that, it offers an opportunity to play organised sport for many children who would not ever have the chance to experience it.”

Note: Get into Rugby is a nationwide grassroots rugby initiative operated under the auspices of SA Rugby and is a brainchild of World Rugby in its strategy of growing the game globally through encouraging players of all ages to try, play and stay in rugby.

  • Four teams unbeaten after third day of u16 SASHOC National Week

Western Province A as they overcame Southern Free State A. Credit: TeamPhotoSAFour teams – Boland A, Eastern Province A, KwaZulu Natal Coastal, and defending champions, Western Province A – remain unbeaten after the third day of the u16 SASHOC National Week in Bloemfontein.

Boland A and Eastern Province A, the runaway leaders of Pool B, have set the stage for a thrilling encounter on day four after they shrugged off the challenges of Southern Gauteng A and Boland B respectively on Sunday.

Andrew Beynon’s Eastern Province side delivered a statement of intent when they walloped Border 8-1 on the opening day of the interprovincial tournament, and they have been on fire ever since then.

On Sunday, they finally conceded a goal, in their fourth game, but it was just the one in a convincing 4-1 victory over Boland B.

Lucy Holderness opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Kerrin Gillies struck twice in the space of five minutes in the second quarter to give her side a three-goal lead. That double vaulted Gillies to the top of the goal scoring charts, with five goals, moving her above her teammate Jana Prinsloo (4) and Asanele Zuma (4).

Boland A also surrendered a goal for the first time on Sunday. It came in a tightly contested clash with Southern Gauteng A, which went down to the wire.

Chris Gerber‘s charges took an early lead through Phillipa Viljoen in the seventh minute, who converted a penalty corner for the second time during the week. Then, Nicola van der Merwe, who scored a last-minute goal against Southern Gauteng B on day two, extended Boland’s lead with a 25th minute goal.

Kirsten Cikes pulled Southerns back into the contest with a 39th minute goal, but Boland held onto their one-goal lead until the end.

Those results confirmed Eastern Province A and Boland A as the semi-finalists from Pool B. However, the winners of the pool will be decided on Monday when the sides go head-to-head.

In Pool A, Western Province A triumphed 4–2 over Southern Free State A to maintain their hold on top spot and guarantee themselves a place in the final four.

Emma Hibbert starred for the Louise Conradie-coached outfit with a brace, while Kira Totaram-Jacobs and Chelsey McGregor pitched in with a goal each. Chanette Jansen van Vuuren struck twice in the fourth chukka as Southern Free State mounted a fightback. It was, however, too little too late.

Second-placed KwaZulu Natal Coastal A played to a 0-0 draw against their neighbours KZN Inland A. That draw, and a win later in the day, has opened a window of hope for Inland A, who, mathematically, still have a shot at the next round.

In their second outing, Phillip Smerdon‘s charges registered a 2-1 win over Southern Free State A. Beayu Chiang and Kate van Breda found the back of the net for Inland in the 24th and 30th minutes before Claire Volschenk pulled one back in the 49th minute, which made for a tense finish to the match.

Inland’s chances for making the semi-finals now depend on Western Province maintaining their unbeaten run when they play KZN Coastal A on day four, while Inland A would also need to convincingly beat Northern Blues A.

    RESULTS

    KZN Coastal A 0-0 KZN Inland A
Western Province A 4-2 Southern Free State A
    KZN Coastal B 0-3 Northern Blues A
    Border 1-6 Southern Gauteng B
    Eastern Province A 4 -1 Boland B
    Southern Gauteng A 1-2 Boland A
KZN Inland A 2-1 Southern Free State A

Day three of the u16 SASHOC National Week in Bloemfontein delivered fireworks and some shocking results, which shook up the status quo ahead of the last day of pool action on Monday.

In both pools, the top two places are still up for grabs.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

After starting their campaign with a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Western Province A on Friday, Eastern Province A bounced back in emphatic fashion on Sunday to keep their hopes of a semi-final spot alive.

Competing in a tough Pool A, coach Michael Abrahams’ team caught the eye on Saturday with a 7-2 demolition of Southern Free State A. They dominated in the midfield and were accurate in front of goal as James Chree grabbed a hattrick and Keegan le Roux slotted a double.

On day three, EP carried that momentum into their double-header. In their first outing, they beat Northern Gauteng 4-1. Le Roux, once again, bagged a brace, while Chree and Dale Jennings also scored to ensure it was a convincing victory.

Later in the day, EP faced a dangerous Boland A team, which had proved just how dangerous they could be in their morning game, defeating previously unbeaten Western Province A 2-1. While Province lost their clean record, their neighbours maintained theirs.

In the big afternoon battle, Eastern Province came out firing and found the back of the net early, in the sixth minute, with Le Roux adding another goal to his impressive tally.

In the third chukka, Le Roux made it a double for a third match in succession before his partner in crime, Chree, struck from a penalty corner to make it 3-0.

Boland almost staged a dramatic comeback in the fourth chukka, though, with Ruben Gouws scoring twice in two minutes. The Eastern Cape boys, however, held on for a crucial 3-2 win.

Those two victories by Eastern Province have made matters in Pool A very interesting ahead of Monday’s last pool games. Western Province A, Boland A, and EP are level on nine points after four matches each and are separated only by goal difference.

KZN Coastal A and KZN Inland A remain in the driving seat in Pool B.

Inland, on Sunday, made it four wins in a row with a 2-1 win over Southern Gauteng A in the final match of the day.

Southerns opened the scoring through Ndyebo Pongwana in the second chukka, but Liyemikhaya Sishi levelled just before halftime.

In the final chukka, with time up, Thandanani Zuma, who has been a frequent scorer for the KZN team, converted a penalty corner to seal the win for coach Mark Sanders‘ troops.

KZN Coastal A also kept their 100 percent winning record intact with a 3-2 win over Southern Gauteng B.

Josh van Biljon, Christopher Abrahams, and Ryde Brisset scored for the winners.

The competition heads into its fourth day on Monday with four teams – Southern Free State A, Border A, KZN Inland B, and Southern Gauteng B – still searching for their first wins of the tournament.

Young guns ready to fire at annual showpiece

South Africa’s top schoolgirls will be in action at the SA Rugby U16 & U18 Girls Weeks staged at Jeppe High School in Johannesburg from Monday.

The final two tournaments in SA Rugby’s 2024 Youth Weeks programme will run from 1 to 4 July. The U18 fixtures will be staged on Monday and Wednesday, while the U16 games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday.

The High-Performance Manager: Women’s Rugby, Lynne Cantwell, said the tournaments are paramount to give these age group girls the opportunity to compete at a national level.

“The system is growing year on year and this competition gives us a sense of which direction that is going. We’ve been monitoring injuries in the competition over the past few years as the physical readiness of the players gives us a lot of information on the make-up of the community game. Last year we noticed a decrease in injuries at u18s age grade for the first time and therefore we are interested track this trend to inform our decisions on the game,” Cantwell explained.

“We are also seeing a slow but gradual increase in female coaches coaching the provincial teams.  This year 22 female coaches will be involved at the tournament. It is important to maintain a gender mix within management, but we also know that girls coached by woman are more likely to want to coach themselves when they grow up.  Developing female coaches is a long-term project.”

For the first time, an u18 EPD squad will be selected, with a two-day High-Performance Camp to follow the tournament.

Some of the Springbok Women players will also be in attendance.

Eastern Province and Free State will meet in the first fixture of the U18 tournament at 09h00 on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, EP will tackle the Blue Bulls in the u16 opener at 10h00 on Tuesday.

  • Siphiwe Tshabalala Soccer Tournament week two catch-up

Two weeks are already in the book, but the Siphiwe Tshabalala Soccer Tournament’s 9th edition continues on its way at the Kgotso Ground in Phiri, Soweto.

The tournament, which runs through the winter schools’ season, is approaching its knockout stages.

On Saturday, there were some significant results achieved, with Orlando Preston Brothers stealing the show by handing Pimville Young Stars FC a 5-0 defeat.

In another exciting game, Mike Stars and MSDA FC did battle.

In the early going, most of the action was confined to the midfield. Mike Stars FC, though, broke through after a counterattack, led by Msizi Moleboloa, who finished well.

Atlehang Ngu missed a clear-cut opportunity to extend the lead, but Mike Stars continued to dominate the match, playing a lot of the game deep inside the MSDA half, which also brought them a number of set pieces near their opponents’ box.
