  • Edendale victorious again, Maritzburg College bags a win

When they met in 2023, Malachi Momple scored this screamer against Newton. He repeated his goal scoring feat against them in round two of the 2024 u19 Inland League season.
When they met in 2023, Malachi Momple scored this screamer against Newton. He repeated his goal scoring feat against them in round two of the 2024 u19 Inland League season.

Edendale High School, the latest addition to the KZN High Schools Football Association’s Inland B League, has made a flying start to the season and emerged as a formidable team just two rounds into the season.

After securing their first victory in the opening round against Alexandra High School B, Edendale continued their winning streak in week two by overwhelming Thornhill 8-0.

Thornhill had no answer to Edendale’s well-coordinated and dominant performance, which not only delivered a bucketload of goals but a clean sheet and all three points on offer, too, to take their tally to a perfect six points from their two outings.

Alexandra High and Carter High School continue their winning streak

Alexandra High School A picked up their second win on the trot, beating the Maritzburg College B team 2-1 to take over top spot in the u19 Inland A League.

Close behind them, in second place, is Carter High School, who handed Linpark a 2-0 loss. Linpark, the runners-up in 2023, have endured a difficult start to the 2024 season and they remain winless.

Maritzburg College back to winning ways

Meanwhile the defending champions, Maritzburg College A, who had a disappointing start to their season, when they needed a late goal to snatch a 2-2 draw against Ixopo, returned to winning ways against Newton.

In a sharp showing, College was led their talisman and star striker Mazithi Qasha. Dangerous with either foot, he struck a hattrick and Jordan Marais netted for the second week in succession. A goal from Malachi Momple completed a 5-0 victory.

All three goal scorers were members of College’s superb 2023 team, and their experience shone through as the Red, Black and White outplayed Newton.

Tight competition in the Coastal A League

In the Coastal League’s second round of matches, Westville Boys’ High was held to a draw by Hillcrest High. A week earlier they shared the spoils against Glenwood.

Glenwood, who won the title in 2023, remain winless, also, after drawing 1-1 with Pinetown.

Northwood and Bechet couldn’t conjure up a goal between them, but Port Shepstone, who went down after a penalty shootout in the 2023 final, claimed a 1-0 win over Durban High School (DHS).

  • Sundowns stun SuperSport in Tshwane Derby | Match Week Eight

Kaizer Chiefs enjoyed a good weekend in the Gauteng Development League, with their u19 team beating Tuks 5-2.
Kaizer Chiefs enjoyed a good weekend in the Gauteng Development League, with their u19 team beating Tuks 5-2.

Just when many believed that SuperSport United had announced themselves as real title contenders this season, following a stunning clean sweep of Panorama FC last weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns inflicted a humbling 3-1 defeat on the sky blues of Tshwane at Clapham High School on Sunday.

Two of the league’s most exciting forwards, Bohlale Ngwato and Michael Alagiozulu, had already made a big impression in the SuperSport United colours, prompting many to predict bright things for the club in this season’s Gauteng Development League.

However, their toughest challenge presented itself on Sunday, with United facing a red-hot Sundowns side away from home.

Despite the tough task that awaited them, many still picked SuperSport to pull off one of the upsets of the season. Then, when the United u13 team beat Sundowns 2-1, for a first ever win over the Brazilians, that belief was bolstered.

However, coach Surprise Moriri‘s Sundowns’ u19 side showed up and showed off once again, recording a 3-1 win to maintain their unbeaten run in the league thus far.

In other results, Kaizer Chiefs was also one of the winners, convincingly beating Tuks 5-2 at the Naturena Village, while the defending champions, Highlands Park, fresh off a draw against Chiefs, which was preceded by a defeat against Sundowns, got back to winning ways at the Greek Sporting Club, where they beat Joburg City 2-1.

Jomo Cosmos and Randburg AFC shared 1-1 draws with Wits Junior and Rosina Sedibane Modiba respectively.

East Rand Athletic Club pulled off a shock when they lowered the colours of the Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), taking a 2-1 win, while NWU Vaal cruised to a 3-0 win over Sevens Academy to infuse some momentum into their campaign.

  • Nories en Wesvalia in NWU Prestige-eindstryd

    FOTO: Frans Lombard

  • Blackies wen in Worcester, Charlies steeds onoorwonne

It was a stylish home win for the Saints’ boys in their league opener.

Their hooker, Lucien Hugo, spearheaded the attack and went over for a brace of tries, with further five-pointers being scored by Eduan van den Heever and Tumelo Lebepe, which was more than enough to secure a convincing victory at home and draw a line under an exciting day of rugby.

Earlier in the day, Brandfort recorded an impressive victory over Zastron with their hooker, Xander van Heerden, also leading the charge and scoring a hat-trick.

Big Greyven Dempsey brought his tally for their last three games to 10 tries by adding another brace to his record.

Last year, these two met in the league final, with Brandfort edging that match 29-27, so Saturday’s victory bodes well for the boys from Brandfort.

Sand du Plessis ran rampant against Bloemfontein South, winning 55-7, with Shaun Maina scoring 15 points.

However, President Steyn’s exciting centre, Juanricht Swanepoel, was the most destructive player of the day. He crossed the try line on four occasions as they crushed Heatherdale 52-8.

To their credit, Heatherdale never stopped asking questions of the Steyners’ defence and their lanky no. 4 lock, Simpiwe Jiyane, was rewarded with a try.

Queen’s College Boys’ High School fended off a strong challenge from Dale College in their FNB Classic Clash over the weekend, to win 29-15 in Komani, after coming from behind.

Dale carried the fine form that took them to a win over Grey High School in their previous outing into the early stages of the match, going up 12-0 after 16 minutes, with backline players Phikolomzi Mtyalela and Singatha Rasi crossing for tries.

Rasi’s impressive five-pointer came from an excellent cross-field kick, which bounced favourably into the outside centre’s outstretched hands, after it had landed just before the dead-ball line.

A strong fightback from Queen’s College ensued with the home team coming back into contention after wing Jameel Fleshman gathered a loose ball and charged to through to score their first try, which sent the 166th Reunion crowd into frenzied celebrations and ignited the turnaround.

At the halfway mark, the match hung in the balance, with Queen’s only one point ahead at 13-12.

In the second half, the home side kept padding their score. Hooker Sinelizwi Deleki broke through the Dale defensive line with a powerful run to add a five-pointer and Fleshman went over for his second try in the corner. Queen’s, with good hands, chucked the ball wide, creating a large overlap and an opportunity for the number 11, which he gratefully took, providing a picture-perfect finish.

The traditional rivalry drew large support for both schools, with the cheering lasting until the bitter end. Queens College will be happy with a third win on the trot, following victories over Stirling and Selborne College.

In East London, Selborne’s hooker Boitumelo Selonyane enjoyed himself, scoring a hat-trick of tries at Port Rex Technical High School, which helped the visitors to a comfortable a 49-10 win.

Despite the large margin of victory, Selborne’s coach Allan Miles was impressed with Port Rex’s effort, stating: “Port Rex played with tons of passion. They made us work really hard for the win. In open play, they were good.”

Vice-captain and scrumhalf Page Fennel converted three out of the eight Selborne tries and will be eager to improve on that rate, especially in tighter matches.

Graeme College stormed to a big victory over Hudson Park, winning the match by 38 points, 50-12.

Fullback Cameron Doyle led the way, scoring 20 points through a try, a penalty and six conversions.

Hudson Park dotted down twice, through Alulutho Giqwa and Osphesona Mbekwa.

It took a sudden death penalty, converted by vice-captain Georgia McClure, for Clarendon High School for Girls to seal a 2-1 victory over Hudson Park High School in the final of the Spar Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge in East London on Sunday.

Clarendon entered the day’s proceedings having scored a convincing 2-0 win over Queenstown Girls’ High in their last game, a week earlier.

Hudson was equally confident after producing impressive results at the Oakhill Co-Ed Festival in Knysna

On Sunday, Clarendon, the hosts, were drawn in Pool A, with Grens, Stirling High School, and Lilyfontein School.

On their journey to the final, coach Luaan Sedras’s side was victorious against all their opponents. They scraped through a 1-0 win over Lilyfontein in their opener before thumping Grens 8-0.

Their toughest encounter, though, was always going to be Stirling High School. In March, Stirling beat the Clarries 1-0 at the Grens Festival, so revenge was on the cards.

Sedras’s team upped the ante and scored twice to claim a 2-0 victory, which booked them a place in the final against Hudson Park, who had also breezed through the group stages.

In the title-decider, the teams were neck-and-neck, with very little to separate them in the 20-minute-long contest.

Clarendon, though, created a scoring chance after six minutes when they received a short corner, but Cara Knott’s shot from the PC went wide.

Chances were few and far between, but Hudson was creative, and almost went ahead with nine minutes to go when Busiwe Mayekiso’s dangerous run from halfway came close to breaking the deadlock, but Juliana Saffy defended it well to keep the game scoreless.

Mayekiso was a constant threat to the Clarendon defence, threatening with her strong runs, but her shot execution let her down.

After time ran out and the teams remained stuck at 0-0, the final went to a penalty shootout.

There, Clarendon kicked matters off, and McClure had her first shot saved by Mbali Khumalo. Hudson’s Melnique Langley took her side’s first shot and also missed.

It was next Cara Knott’s chance for Clarendon, but Khumalo pulled off another save before Demi Knott scored for the hosts.

Hudson’s skipper, Tarelle Jones pulled one back, but Mayekiso shot wide, which meant sudden death would decide who would be crowned the champions.

Jones stepped up for Hudson Park, but she misfired. Then McClure, who had been stopped at the start of the penalty shootout, struck when it counted the most, netting to capture the title for Clarendon.

In the third/fourth play-off, Stirling High School and Cambridge High School also went to penalties, with Stirling coming away with a 1-0 win.

The Clarendon Invitation side grabbed fifth after a 1-0 win over Lilyfontein, and Greenpoint High School shocked Grens 1-0 to end their campaign in seventh place.
