Bloemfontein High takes on St Andrew’s School under the lights of Victoria Park on Saturday evening, with the clash headlining an action-packed day of rugby in the Free State capital.
The clash will be the hosts’ first league action of the season, after they had a bye on the opening weekend.
Their opponents came up short against Brandfort last Saturday, going down 12-31. However, they showed off some attacking potential earlier in the season when they beat Winburg 26-0 at the Pieter Swanepoel Sports Day.
Fullback Ferlin Rulf and the lanky second rower Bokang Maichu impressed in that match and were both rewarded with tries. Their flyhalf, Jano Jackson, was also at the forefront of the attacks and he will relish another opportunity to drive his team towards victory on Saturday evening.
St Andrew’s lost their pre-season opener at the Pieter Swanepoel Sports Day after a gruelling battle with Hoërskool Parys, who scored in the dying seconds to win 24-19.
Saints’ big no. 8, Eduan van den Heever, crossed the try line twice in that match and he will be eager to make a similar impact this weekend.
Speaking of impactful loose forwards keep an eye on Brandfort’s no. 8 Greyven Dempsey, who has scored four tries in their last two matches.
They tackle Zastron, who have stepped forward as one of the early favourites after they dismantled Bloemfontein South 51-0 last weekend.

The Eastern Cape is in for a treat with plenty of exciting matchups across the region this weekend.
The game of the day sees Dale College taking on Queen’s College Boys’ High School in Komani.
At home against Grey High School last weekend, Dale took the honours in a tight contest by seven points, 32-25.
Queen’s College has enjoyed an impressive run over the last three weeks, beating Selborne College 26-21 in East London last time out, while also keeping Stirling and Ben Vorster off the scoreboard in one-sided 50-0 and 38-0 victories.
With a number of the Queen’s players representing Border at the Grant Khomo Week last year and captain Mda Mbasa playing in the Academy Week side, the hosts, who are celebrating the school’s 166th Reunion this weekend, pose a huge threat against Dale.
Their tighthead prop Abulele Bolotini represented Border at the u18 Craven Week last year and will be aiming to build on that achievement as he pushes for a spot in the squad again this year.
SuperSport Schools will broadcast the derby matches live, with the 1st XV game kicking off at 15:00.
Port Rex Technical High School hosts Selborne College, keen to get one over their rivals from East London.
Selborne’s 21-26 loss to Queens’s last weekend was the second time this season they’ve gone down by that score, with Pretoria Boys High beating them 26-21 two weeks earlier.
Graeme College faces Hudson Park and a closely contested encounter is expected.
Graeme features Marcus and Ashton Williams at flyhalf and inside centre respectively. They’re twins, and they played in the 1st XV last year. With an excellent understanding of one another and what’s required at 1st XV level, they’ll give the home side serious impetus in the backline.
Lock Ayola Mali, who played in the Academy Week last year, will be pushing for inclusion in the Craven Week side this year.
Last weekend, Graeme cruised to a 29-12 win over Cambridge, while Hudson Park beat a competitive Hoër Landbouskool Marlow 20-7, which was their fourth win in seven matches this season.
Players to watch from Hudson Park include scrumhalf Landile Gidi and flanker Sibablwe Mtshini, who both represented the Eastern Province u18 Craven Week side in 2023.

Northwood was just five seconds away from ending DHS’s unbeaten run on Saturday, 13 April, but the Horseflies scored at the death to rescue a 3-3 draw.
Michaelhouse kicks off the weekend’s KZN hockey action with a mouthwatering encounter against Northwood at 18:30 on Friday.
Justin Collins’ charges have enjoyed their matches against Michaelhouse in recent seasons, coming out on the right side of those contests.
Despite that history, Collins is not taking the fixture lightly. He is expecting a fight from Nick Bérichon’s team. For one thing, with Bérichon now in charge, ‘House has adopted a different style of play.
Bérichon, who took over the reins at Michaelhouse this year, has been hard at work transforming the team, building a new culture, and his language when addressing his team revolves around constant improvement.
After their two matches against Garsfontein this past weekend, the Michaelhouse coach asked his side not to focus on the result, but what they could do better.
“I want them to strive to do better with each game we play. The plan is to take our hockey to a higher level,” he said.
The Mansergh Astro at Hilton College brings together two teams that have performed well this season when the Kearsney College 1st XI takes on Hilton at 10:45 on Saturday.
One of Kearsney’s mottos this season is, “find a way”. And that’s what they’ll be aiming to do against a Hilton side that has, once again, shown that it is one of South Africa’s elite teams. Kearsney appears to be in that conversation, too.
Good defensive play was one of the main objectives for Ashley Kemp and his Kearsney team as they prepared for the 2024 season. “I take massive pride in defence. If you don’t concede, you give your boys the ability to play freely,” he explained.
Glenwood heads to Westville intent on victory after suffering a narrow 0-1 loss to Clifton College last week at the Riverside Sports Club.
Braydon Naidoo has been working to develop his charges’ skills, and drilling the fundamentals into them was a key part of their preparations for the season.
His team boasts the inimitable talents of Kaden Henderson. The 15-year-old Grade 9 pupil was awarded three Player of the Match awards at the Saints Sports Festival. He’ll be ably supported by his captain, Siya Malatjie and Qhama Dyakopou, a dynamic outside half. Up front, Henderson will hunt for goals in the company of Krian Jugoo.
And while that quartet is capable of individual brilliance, Naidoo doesn’t want the rest of his team to sit back and wait for them to do something special. “We focused on playing as a well-rounded team in our preseason preparations and we hope they carry this into matches,” he said.
In the Free State, Jim Fouche’s hockey programme is on the rise. Their performances have been improving year-on-year and earlier this season they played to a 2-2 draw against defending WesGrow and City champions, Fichardtpark.
They also put together a solid showing at the Keith Fairweather Festival in KZN, where they registered three wins, two draws and a single loss.
Part of the reason for Jim Fouché’s uptick in performance was the quality of opposition they faced during the preseason. “We played against a few club teams, and it was good to see how a few of the boys rose to the challenge,” said coach Graham Seeger, who admitted to being impressed by how his team has gelled in the short period he has been with them.
Jim Fouché takes on Diamantveld on Saturday. It should be a hotly contested encounter.

Saturday: Glenwood vs Westville, Hilton vs Kearsney, St Charles College vs Clifton College, Maritzburg College vs DHS Voortrekker (Bethlehem) vs Goudveld, Witteberg vs Trio, Jim Fouché vs Diamantveld
Eleven teams will make a long drive to President Park in Vereeniging, the home of the Remember Elite Sports Academy (RESA), on Sunday for the second round of the u16 Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) season.
The response to the introduction of women’s football at RESA, which serves the Vaal Triangle – Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg – has been exceptionally strong.
Chairman of the club, Xolani Mathumbo, has described the academy as a close-knit family. Every staff member from the top management down is a football enthusiast, he said.
RESA also takes pride in being a part of the emerging talent pool and nurturing bright prospects, not only for the Gauteng region but also for the future of women’s football, he added.
Simeon Lekhooana, who coaches the RESA u16 GWDL team, said the academy is not only focussed on developing footballers, but it is also about helping men and women to develop as individuals.
In the first round of the GWDL, RESA was too hot for the West Youth Academy to handle and powered their way to an 8-0 victory.
In their second match of the round, they continued their winning streak, defeating Tornado FC 4-1.
Heading into this weekend’s fixtures, RESA lies second on the GWDL log, just behind the dominant Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ team. Both clubs remain undefeated, with Kempton Park FC in third place and JVW in fourth place. The top four are separated by goal difference only.
With home-ground advantage, RESA will hope to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the top spot. They tackle Panorama FC in their first match on Sunday and then take on third-placed Kempton Park in a key contest.
Log-leading Sundowns, who put 14 goals past the West Youth Academy, will face Tornado FC in their next match, followed by a fixture against Panorama.

The King Edward VII (KES) 1st XV is flying, having stormed through Parktown Boys’ High School last weekend, when they won 80-0, and having brushed aside their rivals, St John’s College, the weekend before that.
Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) will be tougher opposition than Parktown, but they have played a murderers’ row of a schedule and enter Saturday’s showdown against KES off the back of a 15-43 defeat to Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg.
The game is at picturesque Brooks Field, however, and PBHS will be hoping to make full use of home field advantage and the solid support of parents and old boys.
Kick-off in Pretoria is at 13:15.
SA Schools’ hooker Esethu Mnebelele returns to action for KES after sitting out last weekend’s fixture with an injured ankle.
He enjoyed his last outing on Brooks Field, where he put his skills up against Boys High captain Shaun Schürmann, who has since matriculated and is now playing within the Bulls’ junior structures.
This year’s Boys High hooker Thapelo Mphela will have his work cut out for him, but what better way to test your ability than to face one of the top hookers in the country? Some would say “Carpe Diem”.
Fortunately for Mphela, he is well supported by props Ofentse Moeng and Jeffrey Singo, and PBHS performed well up front against College on the past weekend, especially when mauling.
Last year, when the teams met, it was KES who came out on top on both occasions after hard-fought games, winning 28-19 and 32-23.
It has been a tough run over the last few seasons for the Candies when facing their rivals from Johannesburg. Based on current form, they face another difficult challenge.
Slowing down a marching Red Army, will take some good match-day tactics and sure tackling. Coach Paul Anthony will draw from his rugby nous to find a way to stop the barrage of strong offensive plays that Marco Engelbrecht has instilled in his side.
Expect a fast-paced match with neither team holding back. If Boys High can restrict ball to the KES backline – and their impressive rolling maul could be one avenue for them to explore – it could end up closer than the pundits are calling it.
KES, though, are full of confidence and rightfully the hot favourites heading into the game.
King Edward VII: 15 M Methula, 14 Jarell Mbuyi, 13 Olunje Mehlomakulu, 12 Tristan Maugeri, 11 Haniel Monkoti, 10 Simphiwe Moyo, 9 Regan McGurk, 8 Kebotile Maake, 7 Sam Bruwer, 6 James Kobrowisky, 5 Chinedu Amadi, 4 Michael Bownes, 3 Nathan Frank VD Merwe, 2 Esethu Mnebelele, 1 Connor White.
