  • GDL Weekend Preview | Round Three

GDL newcomers NWU Vaal face a tough opener against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.
GDL newcomers, the NWU Vaal Academy, face a tough opener against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

Transitioning to higher and stronger leagues in any sport is a difficult process, and it is no different in football, which can be extremely unforgiving. The Gauteng Development League (GDL) is no exception.

Newly promoted teams quickly discover the steep rise in standards and intensity from the lower leagues to the top-flight competitions.

Regarded by many as Africa’s top development league, the GDL often dishes out harsh lessons and reality checks to newly promoted teams, and this season the NWU Vaal Academy and East Rand Athletic Club are attempting to establish themselves in the league. Neither has made the best of starts, for different reasons.

For NWU Vaal, an attempt to switch the team’s name to Mmabatho right at the start of their campaign was an untimely inconvenience. The back-and-forth discussions between the academy and SAFA Gauteng about the name switch led to coach Tebello Kheswa‘s team missing the opening two rounds. No reasons were forthcoming from SAFA Gauteng for NWU Vaal’s curious absence.

The matter has forced Kheswa and his players to wait a little longer to get onto the pitch, and for the fans, it has been a long wait to watch the highly regarded team from the Vaal. Now, it appears as if they will retain the NWU Vaal name and they will be in action on Saturday.

Remember, this is the same side that beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the GDL Youth Cup last year, on their way to the final of the same competition, where they fell short against coach David Mathebula‘s Kaizer Chiefs.

The delay to the start of NWU Vaal’s campaign could give Sundowns an edge over the league’s newbies, who might carry some rustiness into the contest, and who will need to build up their match fitness.

The state of the academy team will be revealed at Clapham High, where the four fixtures are set to get underway from 09:00 on Saturday, when the under-13s run out, through to the under-19s, at 14:00.

For fellow newcomers, the East Rand Athletic Club, life at the top has been about learning valuable lessons, even after they opened their league season with a win over Wits Junior.

Last weekend, they were involved in four tight clashes with Tuks, who won the u19 and u17 matches by identical 2-1 margins, while the u15 tie ended 1-1, and the u13s shared a 2-2 draw.

Although East Rand Athletic Club suffered a couple of losses, they were very competitive.

On Saturday, they face a red-hot TS Galaxy who recorded a couple of big victories over Wits Junior last week, with the u19s winning 5-1 and the u13s powering their way to a 6-0 win. The U15 and u17 games ended in draws.

In other fixtures, on Saturday, Highlands Park host the School of Excellence at Balfour Park, at Marks Park, Wits Junior will be keen to bounce back when they face Sevens Academy, while Joburg City is set to host Rosina Sedibane at the Greek Sporting Club.

Remember Elite Soccer Academy (RESA) will travel to the Jomo Cosmos 1st Training Ground to lock horns with Jomo Cosmos.

Kaizer Chiefs host Randburg AFC at the Kaizer Chiefs Village, and Panorama visits Huntersfield for a date with Kathorus Hyper.

To close off the weekend, the only fixture to be played on Sunday will also be broadcast live on DStv Channel 216, with the Pretoria-based teams, Tuks and SuperSport United, doing battle at the University of Pretoria Sports Campus.

All the other fixtures will be broadcast live SuperSport Schools.

  • Intensity set to rise at Graeme Rugby Festival

As the schools’ rugby season starts to take shape, the intensity will be raised a few more notches when the exciting first-team programme for the Graeme College Rugby Festival gets underway on Friday (March 15).

This annual sports extravaganza in Makhanda is again set to attract big crowds to the Graeme campus and the action kicks off with a series of age-group matches on Thursday.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Already there have been some interesting results in the early season games and although not too much should be read into the scores at this stage of the year, there were notable performances this past weekend by Daniel Pienaar (29-19 winners over Graeme) and Cambridge (22-20 winners against Dale in the Grens Festival).

Coach Jonty van der Meulen’s Graeme team will be looking to absorb the lessons from the Daniel Pienaar clash as they face one of the powerhouses of Eastern Cape schools rugby in Selborne in the festival’s final game on Saturday.

It is to the host school’s credit that they do not shy away from a proper challenge in their own tournament and Van der Meulen’s relatively young side is ready to step up to the plate.

“We do realise that Selborne is, and always will be, a force to be reckoned with in Eastern Cape rugby, but that is a challenge we are ready to embrace and we will need to make sure we are at our best on the day,” the coach said.

Cambridge, meanwhile, kick-off the proceedings on Saturday with a 10.30 match against Muir College from Kariega, which should make for an entertaining encounter.

These two teams last met in Makhanda in the 2022 tournament, with Muir taking the honours 24-7.

It’s an outcome Cambridge will be particularly keen to reverse this time, buoyed, as they should be, by Saturday’s result.

And yet there will be no easy pickings against the Kariega side, who will feed off the positive memories of their previous encounter.

The Friday programme in Makhanda throws up some particularly fascinating match-ups, with Grey High and Hudson Park featuring in the final match of the day at 3.30pm.

The Gqeberha team did not have the best of seasons in 2023 and it will be interesting to see if they can lift the level of their performances this year.

They will start as the favourites against Hudson, but the East London school would like nothing better than to take down one of Eastern Cape’s top guns, having had a useful warm-up by outclassing Hangklip 46-7 in the Grens Festival at the weekend.

They know it will be much tougher on Friday.

Dale will be looking to bounce back, but face a testing fixture against the competitive Nico Malan side, who were edged by three points against St Andrew’s this weekend.

With both sides preferring an attacking brand of rugby, this should be one of the most entertaining matches of the day.

That fixture will be preceded by a blockbuster showdown between Kingswood and Marlow, with the Makhanda outfit aiming to build on the winning form they showed during last season.

Coach James Winstanley, however, is all too aware of the threat posed by the Cradock team.

“If you don’t get into the match early against Marlow you will be in trouble because they always come out hard and you have to make sure you are up for the challenge from the start,” he said.

Besides the Graeme-Selborne clash on Saturday, the main curtain-raiser between St Andrew’s and Brandwag will be one of the big clashes of the day.

Both sides will be ready for battle as they continue to find their best combinations after some useful warm-up games at the weekend.

Brandwag competed in the Grens Festival in East London and received excellent preparation with wins over Hangklip (33-7) and Port Rex (36-12).

St Andrew’s, though, after their thrilling win over Nico Malan, will be well prepared for another testing fixture.

The 13:00 match is another which will provide a proper contest as Pearson continues to prove they can match, and beat, the best in the Eastern Cape when they take on the tough Queen’s College combination.

    The first team fixtures are:

    15 March 2024 | Somerset Field

09:00 – Graeme College II vs Port Alfred High
10.30 – Port Rex THS vs Mary Waters
11:45 – Union High va HTS Daniel Pienaar
13:00 – Kingswood College vs Marlow Landbou
14:15 – Dale College vs Nico Malan
15:30 – Grey High School vs Hudson Park

    16 March 2024 |  Somerset Field

    11:45 – Stirling vs Framesby
    13:00 – Queen’s College vs Pearson

  • Stellenberg striving for new heights in 2024

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard

Stellenberg is locked and loaded and ready to kick off the new season when they host Paarl Gimnasium this weekend.

The Jade Brigade has been steadily building its rugby programme over the last couple of seasons, and this year they’re taking aim at some of the bigger names in schools’ rugby.

Follow the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register now

Head coach, Divan Batt, will guide the Stellenberg first team through their challenging run of fixtures.

He is assisted by coaches Louw Lombaard and Jaco Laubscher, with Marnus Myburgh taking care of conditioning and Faan Fourie as their team physio. Head of Rugby at Stellenberg, Pierre du Preez, manages the team.

Batt said that while they want to perform well at the annual tournaments and in the league, they will measure their success against the goals they set for themselves every weekend.

“It’s important for us to do the basics well, with a bit of flair when the occasion allows it,” he said, when identifying one of their season’s goals.

With some of last year’s top players back in the squad again this season, they have their sights set on making their mark against some of the top guns in South Africa at the North/South and Absa Wildeklawer tournaments.

Dehan Neethling, their dynamic fullback, forms part of an experienced core group of players who will be directing the backline this season.

Speedy winger, Luc Cilliers, also donned the first team jersey last year, along with centre, Estian Steyn, and Stefan Roux, who will have a pivotal role to play at flyhalf.

In the forward pack, three of the tight five and two loosies sport first-team caps from last year. Ryk Groenewald (prop), Almero Keizer (hooker), Zian Erasmus (lock), Alex Schoeman (flanker) and Dale du Toit (eighth man) gained valuable experience last season.

Keizer, Groenewald, Neethling and Dean van Rensburg also played in the Western Province Invitational side that took on England and France ahead of the SA Schools games last year, and Steyn represented the WP XV at the Craven Week.

Stellenberg ended their season strongly in 2023, but they will have to shake off any rust quickly as they open their season against some of South Africa’s best.

After this weekend’s opener against the mighty Paarl Gim, the Jade Brigade rolls into Pretoria where they take on a Noordheuwel side who have already done away with the likes of Hoërskool Trio and Outeniqua this year, before taking on the hosts, Affies, on the final day of the event.

The rest of the season consists of more challenging league fixtures against SACS, Boland Landbou, Oakdale Landbou and Strand. They also travel to Kimberley where they will square off against EG Jansen and Garsfontein at the Absa Wildeklawer.

As always, their season ends with an interschools clash against Hoërskool Durbanville. They’ll be out to maintain bragging right after they beat their arch-rivals 21-12 away from home in the previous instalment.

  • A history-making titanic tussle, under lights, of different styles

Clifton College's Jason Adams on the attack against Westville Boys' High.
Clifton College’s Jason Adams on the attack against Westville Boys’ High.

On 1 August 1998, Maritzburg College became the first school in South Africa to play a game on its own Astro. Now, on Friday, the famous Pape’s will host its first match under lights when College takes on Clifton College.

There is no doubt that both the Maritzburg College and Clifton College first teams are well prepared and well drilled for the 2024 hockey season, with early morning sessions, gym programmes, and some good pre-season matches against local schools all preparing them for the action proper, which starts on Friday.

Calvin Price, the new Director of Hockey at Clifton, is excited about the Friday Night Lights 2024 season opener in Pietermaritzburg.

Price, who recently guided the KZN Raiders Ladies indoor hockey team to a winner’s gold medal at the National Ladies Indoor IPT in Cape Town, reflected: “College hockey is always strong, and with years and years of building a hockey culture, College under lights on Pape’s, no doubt, will be a challenge, but we are up for it and looking forward to it.”

Price has succeeded Keagan Pearce (now the Director of Hockey at Kearsney College) as the head of Clifton’s hockey, and ahead of the new season he acknowledged the excellent work done by his predecessor, saying he was grateful for the hard work and passion Pearce had put into the Clifton programme.

“We will be playing an exciting brand of hockey where we will be expressing ourselves on attack and defence. We are a young squad, with loads of talent, and we look forward to the busy winter season ahead,” Price said.

Kyle Emerson, the College first team coach, said he is thrilled to have his team run out under their new floodlights, and excited to have the school’s passionate boarders and staff out on the banks of Pape’s to support the Red Army.

In 2023, Clifton College scored a first ever win over Maritzburg College, winning 2-1 at the Riverside Sports Club.
In 2023, Clifton College scored a first ever win over Maritzburg College, triumphing 2-1 at the Riverside Sports Club.

College’s SA u17 goalkeeper, Nicholas Holmes, who competed in the second edition of the u17 Dato Mirnawan Cup in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, in December 2023, will have a key role to play if College is to record a victory.

He, together with the experienced Julian Konigkramer (KZN Inland u18B last year), will co-lead the Red, Black, and White as vice-captains, supporting their impressive captain, Ipeleng Mosupye (KZN Inland u18A last year).

Head down to the Pape’s Astro at 18:30 to enjoy a game of superb skills, patience, and explosive counterattacks or follow the action live on SuperSport Schools.

The main game will be preceded by three others. The u14A teams meet at 15:30, the u16As start at 16:30, and the 2nd sides begin at 17:30.

Maritzburg College has made braais available for spectators who wish to bring and braai.

    Puntemakers:

Waterkloof 63 (33) – Drieë: Ruan Jacobs (2), Stephan de Beer, Divan Smith, Ruben Cox, Happy Makate, Ronan Bastiaanse, Lendré Janse van Vuuren, Malcom George. Doelskoppe: Batiaanse (9). Kempton Park 21 (14) – Drieë: Tiaan Delport (2), Preston Smith. Doelskoppe: Delport (3).

    Ander spanne:

    o. 16: Kempton Park 32, Waterkloof 14.

    o. 15: Waterkloof 20, Kempton Park 17.

    o. 14: Kempton Park 26, Waterkloof 8.
