  • DHS lift Clifton Centenary Cup after an exciting final day

The inaugural Clifton T20 Tournament proved to be an unequivocal success, despite Mother Nature’s interference with the schedule on day two, and it was, also, especially rewarding for Durban High School, who held off their great rivals, Maritzburg College, to become the first winners of the impressive Clifton Centenary Cup.

College had risen, Lazarus-like, to claim a 10-run victory over Glenwood High in the first semi-final of the day, played at the Riverside Sports Club.

The Green Machine had come hard at the Red, Black and White, and had them struggling at 30/2 after eight overs. College captain Chad Mason, however, played a resolute innings, scoring 44 off 41 balls, to boost his side’s total and also hold down one of the ends.

The next eight overs delivered 68 runs and College, with 20 from both Julian Konigkramer and Sphamandla Dzanibe, posted 132/8. It was a good effort after a slow start.

Glenwood, in reply, lost their first wicket before they had scored a run. Then, their captain, Ntando Soni, and Krian Jugoo combined for a beautifully executed partnership of 106, and it appeared as if Glenwood would cruise into the final.

With only 26 runs required for victory at a run a ball, Jugoo was caught by Samuel Hughes off the bowling of Chad Mason for 36 from 36, which included two fours and a six. Soni followed shortly after that, with the total still on 106, bowled by Oliver Da Costa for 58. His 50-ball stay was highlighted by three sixes and three fours.

College had their tails up, but Glenwood still looked odds-on to win. Except they didn’t.

From 106/1, the Green Machine tumbled to 122/7, with no other batsmen making more than five runs. It was an astonishing turn-around.

Samuel Hughes picked up 2/19, while his new ball partner, Michael Gibson, who finished with 1/14, did a splendid job at the death, keeping Glenwood quiet with a series of balls in the block hole.

Glenwood caused Maritzburg College some serious problems in their semi-final showdown, but College pulled out a remarkable win from a losing position to reach the final.
Glenwood caused Maritzburg College serious problems in their semi-final showdown, but College pulled out a remarkable win from a losing position to reach the final.

The other semi-final was a more clear-cut affair, with DHS claiming a five-wicket win over St Charles College, with four overs to spare.

Saints will look back on the match and think that they, maybe, went too hard at the DHS bowling too soon. Semal Pillay had chosen to field after winning the toss, and that decision, plus the thick layer of cloud up above, should have warned St Charles that there was something in the wicket.

The Pietermaritzburg boys went for big shots from the off, and they were made to pay for their risky approach. In fact, only Marcell Wellman, with 17, and Cian Fortmann, with 10, reached double figures as wickets went down regularly.

DHS skipper Pillay led the way for his team, capturing 3/9, while the impressive Taine Havemann claimed 3/13, and the consistent Bhavesh Naicker weighed in with 3/21. After 18.4 overs, St Charles were all out for 94.

Knowing what they needed to do, DHS delivered a controlled run chase, with opener Omar Ismaeel anchoring their response with an unbeaten 37 from 47, which included two boundaries, both of them sixes.

Semal Pillay added 23, and that was pretty much that as DHS booked their place in the title-decider.

In front of a healthy crowd, Maritzburg College batted first in the final after Chad Mason won the toss. They made a steady start, but then lost their opening pair, Oliver Da Costa and Llewelyn Sutherland within the space of three runs to slip to 34/2.

DHS then removed another two batsmen within the space of three runs, getting rid of Chad Mason and Michael Gibson to reduce College to 56/4. Maritzburg needed to reset, but also keep the scoreboard ticking over, and Ryan McKean and Sphamandla Dzanibe did a good job of that, adding 48 for the fifth wicket before McKean was out for 17.

A picture-perfect pull for six, which cleared the boundary with plenty to spare, was the highlight of Sphamandla Dzanibe's fine innings.
A picture-perfect pull for six, which cleared the boundary with plenty to spare, was the highlight of Sphamandla Dzanibe’s fine innings.

Dzanibe played some lovely shots in his unbeaten 42 from 35 deliveries. His innings included three stunning sixes, which owed more to excellent timing than brute power.

After 20 overs, College had made 127/8. It was the kind of score that left one wondering whether it was a decent total or not.

Taine Havemann did a superb job with the ball, removing batsmen two, three and four, while speedy Bayanda Majola snapped up 2/25.

DHS didn’t make the best of starts to their run chase, losing two of their top three with only 27 runs on the board. Omar Ismaeel, though, played a mature knock to score 34 from 37 deliveries, with three fours. He stuck around until there were 103 runs on the board.

DHS opener Omar Ismaeel cut down on risky shots and that approach proved to be an excellent one as he top scored for his side in their win over Maritzburg College.
DHS opener Omar Ismaeel cut down on risky shots and that approach proved to be an excellent one as he top scored for his side in their win over Maritzburg College.

School immediately lost another wicket on the same total after Ismaeel departed, but Taine Havemann and Ethan Cooper didn’t skip a beat. With the game in the balance, both hammered big sixes off of their pads.

The Horseflies needed 25 from 17 balls to win, but they made it with five to spare as Havemann and Cooper rose to the challenge and dictated matters to the College bowlers.

No team emerged from the Clifton T20 with a clean record, but DHS were, unquestionably, worthy winners.

Over the course of the past year, DHS has taken some lumps, but the evolution of the 1st XI has been quite something to witness. A number of talented players, who were once young first teamers, are now experienced, battle-hardened and consistent performers, and there is more young talent filtering into the side’s ranks. School should be thrilled with the progress they have made.

Clifton College claimed fifth place, after a 14-run win over Northwood. Three solid knocks – from Tim Saulez (43*), Bryon Ward (41) and captain Shahzaad Perumal (34) – carried the hosts to 145/5.

They then did a good job defending that total, with Callum Watson (1/18) and Tim Saulez (3/22) sharing three late wickets to halt the Knights’ run chase, just when they needed to accelerate. Northwood finished on 131/6.

Michaelhouse claimed seventh after a solid 45-run win over St John’s College (Harare). The Zimbabweans did a good job of bowling out ‘House for 148, just one ball before the end of their innings. Captain Cameron Strudwick, with 31, and Hayden Hewlett, with 30, paced the Michaelhouse batting effort.

Meanwhile, there were two wickets apiece for Goven Dhaneel (2/14), Michael Blignaut (2/23) and Kian Blignaut (2/25).

Unfortunately for the Rams, they made an awful start to their innings, falling to 1/3 early on. A number of batsmen then made starts but were dismissed before turning those starts into substantial contributions. Only Michael Blignaut pressed on. He top scored, with 33 from 30, striking four fours and a six.

St John’s never recovered from their poor start, however, and they were all out for 103. Harry Vickery picked up 4/21 and Cameron Strudwick 3/13 to lead the Balgowan boys to a comfortable win.

Hilton College finished ninth after a five-run victory over Westville Boys’ High.

Simon Steyn smacked six sixes (and no fours) in an unbeaten 54 from only 29 deliveries for Hilton, while Jayden Roux added a more sedate 24, to help Hilton to 150/5.

Left-arm spinner Roxton Payne snared 2/22, and then made 30, the highest score in Westville’s reply. Captain Nicandro Kistna contributed 22 from 19, but Westville came up agonisingly short of the 151 they needed.

St Charles opening batsman Cian Fortmann, who blasted 153* against Hilton College, was named the Batsman of the Tournament, while Bhavesh Naicker, the leading wicket-taker, received recognition as the Bowler of the Tournament.

Fabian Lazarus, the coach of the winning DHS team, was named the Coach of the Tournament.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Middelburg: 241 (Gavin Genis 59, Ekstras 43, Ivan Deale 33, Hendre Nel 21; Ethan Dreyer 3/33, Hanro Terblanche 3/65, Armand Kotze 2/2, WJ Enslin 2/43). HTS Middelburg: 85 (Anthoni Smuts 27, Hanro Terblanche 21; Katlego Baloyi 5/3, Gavin Genis 3/36)/ Hoërskool Middelburg wen met 156 lopies.

Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg: 137 (Maro Hartkoph 46, Dandre Louw 20; Jayden Smith 3/12, Tyrone Whateley 2/49). Hoërskool Dinamika: 138/8 (Mohammad Valli 57; Quentin Dietrechsen 3/8, Jaco Botha 3/23). Dinamika wen met twee paaltjies.

Uplands College: 213/8 (Benji Loon 52, Ekstras 33, Marley Waspe 32, Luke Barnard 27; Kyle Crous 4/33, Logan Janse van Rensburg 2/23). Hoërskool Merensky: 207 (Rinaldo Bornman 58, Luka Heinlein 54, Ekstras 38, Xander Schoeman 26; Benji Loon 3/50, Gregory Kazandjis 2/21). Uplands College wen met ses lopies.

  • Boland Landbou clinch thriller to end Gqeberha tour on a high

After Grey High outmuscled the visiting Boland Landbou in an exciting two-day battle in Gqeberha on Saturday, the visitors regrouped to edge past Pearson in a T20 on Sunday.

Grey’s batting has been a strength of the team this season and they continued their good from against the farmers, with Marco Giaconi compiling a fine century.

Luke Tait anchored the innings for the hosts, sticking around for 75 balls, before Tiaan Ryke finally found a way through his defences.

The rest of Grey’s lineup found it more challenging, but Giaconi’s 57-over stay inflated the hosts’ score to 222 before Rynard van der Schyff caught him off the bowling of Gunther Schmidt.

Boland Landbou then struggled at the crease in the face of the precision bowling of Grey. Tristan Grundling (3/11), Nathan Howell (3/22) and Xander Elkington (3/23) saw to it that the farmers mustered only 116 in their first innings, still 129 runs shy of Grey’s mark.

Francois Prins accounted for Giaconi in Grey’s second innings, but Elkington took charge, scoring an unbeaten 64 before Grey sent Boland out to bat for a second time.

The visitors had no answers to the questions posed by Tristan Grundling, however. He accounted for six batsmen, leaving Boland Landbou well beaten.

Determined to end their tour on a high, the farmers lifted themselves for the challenge of an in-form Pearson in a T20 clash on Sunday.

Batting first, Boland tallied 139/4, with a brisk 56 runs off of 31 balls by Stefan Conradie the key knock in their innings.

Pearson’s top order was then torn apart by Schmidt, who took 3/16, but Sulaymaan Gangat (25*), Matthew Burton (33) and Luke Hector (37*) got the locals to within touching distance in the waning overs.

With Pearson needing 17 runs in the last two overs, and with three wickets standing, Gangat and Hector did their utmost to chase down the visitors’ total, but the Boland bowlers bowled disciplined lines and lengths to ensure their side returns to Paarl with a win.

    17 February

Grey High first innings 245/8 (Marco Giaconi 134, Kian Cambier 26, Tristan Grundling 23*, Luke Tait 23; Tiaan Ryke 1/14); Boland Landbou first innings 116 (Kobus Conradie 30, Henré Swart 21; Tristan Grundling 3/11, Nathan Howell 3/22, Xander Elkington 3/23); Grey High second innings 173/5 (Xander Elkington 64*, Kian Cambier 42, Luke Tait 28; Francois Prins 2/29, Marius du Plessis 2/48); Boland Landbou second innings 118 (Stefan Conradie 27, Kobus Conradie 22; Tristan Grundling 6/36). Grey High won by 185 runs.

    18 February

Boland Landbou 139/4 (Stefan Conradie 56, Francois Prins 36; Cayden Wilson 1/15); Pearson 135/7 (Luke Hector 37*, Matthew Burton 33, Sulaymaan Gangat 25*; Gunther Schmidt 3/16, Francois Prins 2/24). Boland Landbou won by four runs (T20).

  • Nog ‘n Pretorius 100-tal dryf Sasolburg voort

Meyer Pretorius, Sasolburg | FOTO: Nikite Pretorius

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Graeme College take the spoils in Makhanda derby

Graeme College claimed the bragging rights in Makhanda with a win over their local rivals, Kingswood College, on Saturday.

On the Somerset Field, Graeme bowled well up front to limit the visitors to 39/3 before Jarred Botha and Chris Zimmerman dug in their heels to give the Kingswood total a boost.

Botha spent 82 balls in the middle, providing good support to Zimmerman, who carved out an unbeaten 54 runs.

The remainder of the batting lineup, however, struggled to come to terms with the Graeme bowling, which gave up less than three runs per over in restricting Kingswood to 171 all out after 59 overs.

Graeme’s batsmen then rode out an initial onslaught from the visitors’ new ball bowlers as they patiently set about pursuing the victory target.

That conservative approach, however, meant that when Luphelo Mdyesha came to the crease, as the hosts’ fifth batsman, there was still a long way to go from 58/3.

Mdyesha, though, gave the innings the impetus it needed, scoring 46 from 56 balls, before David London caught him in front of the wicket.

Ryan Stobbs added a quick 20 runs in the middle order, which included four boundaries, to put Ashton Williams into a position to see Graeme to victory.

Meanwhile, Pearson and Woodridge College battled it out in a time-format game, with Pearson outmuscling their opponents to record a win on the first innings.

Bowling first, Cayden Wilson spearheaded a relentless Pearson attack, taking five wickets, as Woodridge were dismissed for 131 runs.

The Gangat brothers, Esa and Sulaymaan, combined to pick off the remaining batsmen to put their side on the front foot.

Captain, Esa Gangat, with 66, then led his side to exceed the Woodridge total by 112 runs.

When the challengers returned to the crease for their second innings, young Sulaymaan Gangat continued piling on the pressure, snaring two more wickets, to boost his tally for the day to five.

Time ran out before Pearson could work through their opponents’ lineup for a second time, but they had established a clear-cut victory on the first innings.

St Andrew’s College and Selborne College drew their match, with both sides posting high totals and making the opposition’s bowlers toil hard.

St Andrew’s won the toss and decided to send Selborne out to field first. William Beamish and Rhys Wiblin then combined for an opening partnership of 133 runs before Adam Rogers removed Beamish.

Rogers later got rid of Wiblin, as well, to take the sting out of the home team’s attack, while Tré Gilbert ripped through the middle order to take four wickets.

Selborne’s reply started shakily, as they stuttered to 26/2, but Jacques van der Merwe and Gilbert turned the tables on the hosts with a healthy 139-run partnership.

Van der Merwe came tantalisingly close to reaching a century, missing out on the milestone by only a single run, when Beamish trapped him LBW.

Gilbert was run out for 67, but the visitors were sitting pretty at 193/4 by that point. A further unbeaten 64 runs by Waedon Plaatjies saw them close in on their target, but the rate of play had slowed throughout the day and the game ended without a winner.

During the week, Selborne turned in dominant performances in big wins over Stirling and Cambridge by large margins. Gilbert and Plaatjies were standout performers in those contests, too.

Logan Fleetwood knocked over 4/7 as Framesby added another impressive victory to their record, beating Nico Malan by seven wickets.

Hanro van Jaarsveld then scored 53 not out to see Framesby over the line in only 23 overs.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Kemptonpark: 302/4 (Wian Pieters 124, Sheldon Kruger 78, Joshua Shanker 56; Hanu van Heerden 1/31). Hoërskool Montana: 171 (Luhan Theunissen 44, Marco Rudolph 40, Juan Theunissen 34, Schalk van Jaarsveld 21; Martin Williams 3/17, Wian Pieters 3/30, Floors Mynhardt 2/29). Kemptonpark wen met 131 lopies.

Hoërskool Hans Moore: 237/9 (Adrian Watson 64, Warren Minnaar 40, Kenan Shaw 27, Aiden Shaw 27, Xavier Coetzee 25; Werner Durrheim 2/28, Andre van Niekerk 2/34, JD Landsberg 2/37, Antonie van Niekerk 2/48). Hoërskool Monument: 208 (Rieghardt Prinsloo 64, Nicholas van der Colff 27, Caleb dos Santos 24; Adrian Watson 5/46, Henre Everleigh 2/27). Hans Moore wen met 29 lopies.

Potchefstroom Gimnasium: 67 (James Wood 12; Ryno Redlinghuys 3/17, Daniel Steyn 3/20, Ruhan Oliphant 2/14). Hoërskool Eldoraigne: 68/1 (Kyle de Bruin 43, Ryno Mulder 21; Thlone Thabata 1/2). Eldoraigne wen met nege paaltjies.

  • Moyi, aged 14, scores 105 to lead Somerset College to victory in Worcester

Owethu Moyi, Somerset College | PHOTO: Sam Hughes

Owethu Moyi scored an outstanding 105 runs for Somerset College to lead them to victory over HTS Drostdy in Worcester on Saturday.

Opening alongside the seasoned Chad Ayford, Moyi laid the foundation for an impressive performance from the Somerset West outfit, who ran out comfortable winners by 59 runs.

The duo scored 98 runs before Helgardt Nortje made the first breakthrough for Drostdy in combination with Bryan Cochrane.

Moyi, however, continued piling on the runs, He faced 162 deliveries and went on to record his third century of the year. The exciting young batsman had already racked up two tons for the u15 team, smashing an unbeaten 105 against Westville Boys’ High and scoring 106 against Hans Moore.

Achieving the feat for the first team, however, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the young talent.

He had already put in a number of impressive showings for the senior side, scoring 52 runs against Framesby and 40 when they played Pearson, but Saturday’s performance saw him take charge and elevate his contributions to a new level. He struck 12 boundaries, three of which went flying for the maximum, and showed marvellous control to pick apart the Drostdy attack.

While Moyi was boosting the visitors’ score, Nortje did his best to keep the home team in the game, removing six Somerset batsmen at a cost of only 37 runs.

By the time Sias du Toit finally got rid of Moyi, the visitors’ total had swelled to 225.

To highlight Moyi’s performance with the bat, following his dismissal, the HTS Drostdy bowlers removed the remaining three batsmen without conceding another run.

The local batsmen got off to a shaky start, stumbling to 57/4, before Adriaan Krynauw offered some resistance.

However, Thomas Parsons (3/26) and Troy Varie (2/31) sliced apart the HTS Drostdy batting, with Moyi getting in on the action again to run out Cochrane.

Krynauw played well to score 42 not out, but the game belonged to Somerset College, with Ayford getting rid of the tailenders to secure the win.

There were also plenty of runs scored on the De Villiers Oval, where SACS hosted Paarl Boys’ High.

Keiron Bowers set the tone with an unbeaten 108 runs for SACS before Johan Wege replied with 100 not out for the visitors.

Wege’s efforts weren’t enough, though, as Booishaai ran out of time, chasing an imposing 272-run target set by the hosts.

Bowers needed only 67 deliveries to reach his century, launching three sixes in the final over, to power his way to triple figures.

Rowen Taplin (50) and Reza Salie (45) also bolstered the SACS’ total, and Reece Theunis led their run defence, capturing taking three wickets for 18 runs, to help restrict Boishaai to 236/8.

In Somerset West, Paarl Gimnasium held on for a narrow six-run win over Parel Vallei in a tense battle.

After taking his 100th wicket for the first team in Parel Vallei’s previous outing, Henry Jones continued his wicket-taking spree, adding three more to his record, to help hold the visitors to 115 runs, after the home team won the toss and decided to field.

Sibulele Makaleni also dismissed three of the Paarl batsmen, but Adrian Louw (38) and Charles King (27) dug in for a vital 45-run partnership.

King then helped with the counteroffensive, picking up three wickets. Koch van Eyssen was the pick of the Gimmies’ bowlers, taking 3/14, while Louis Koen snared a brace.

The visitors dialled up the pressure when it was most needed, taking the final four wickets for the loss of only seven runs as Parel Vallei drew nearer to their target.

Henry Jones dealt the final blow with the first delivery of the 33rd over, to end the hosts’ challenge within a maximum of tying the game.

Charlie Hofmeyr 1st XI 2024 (Photo provided)

In Robertson, five Charlie Hofmeyr matriculants – Luan Giliomee, Daniël Bakkes, Petrus Bakkes, Philip du Plessis and Leolan Davids – playing their last game for the school, ended their time in the first team on a high note.

Petrus and Daniël Bakkes combined for an opening partnership of 101 and Reagan Davids contributed a further 50 to help Charlie Hofmeyr to 226/6.

A relentless bowling attack by Du Plessis (2/3), Keahan Alexander (2/4), Daniël Bakkes (2/11) and Heinrich Fourie (2/23) smothered the hosts’ reply, sending them packing for only 61.

Giliomee, who has been a part of the first team since grade eight, finished as his school’s top scorer on 1 150 runs, which is just one of the many Charlie Hofmeyr records that he owns.

  • Queens High completes double over Jeppe

Queens High School completed a double over Jeppe High School for Boys, following up a midweek win with a nail-biting one-run victory on Saturday.

Opting to bowl first, Jeppe did the necessary hard work, making early inroads, to have the Queens’ batting lineup wobbling at 24 for two after the first eight overs.

Bafana Mthunzi then dug Queens out of the hole, contributing a well-played half-century, with his 51, the innings’ top score, coming from 96 deliveries. Tespiso Senosi (32) provided much needed support.

Luke Cannon, however, had the upper hand over the Queens’ batsmen, claiming figures of three wickets for 32 runs. The leg-spinner, Shreshth Kumar, wrapped things up nicely for Jeppe with his contribution of two wickets for only 13 runs.

As had been the case on Wednesday, when Queens recorded a six-run win, the Jeppe batsmen found the going tough. Katlego Sekopane led the charge with the ball for Queens. In an inspired spell, he knocked over three wickets for 25 runs. Opening bowler Martin Willemse (2/37) weighed in with two wickets up front.

Jeppe were wobbling on 88/4, but Munib Ayob fought hard, contributing a fighting 50 from 122 deliveries. Unfortunately for him, only Aiden Reyneke offered decent support, making 22, but that wasn’t enough as they fell short, by the barest of margins.

St David’s Marist Inanda batted superbly against Parktown Boys’ High, with Jason Rowles blasting an exceptional century. He let loose, smashing 23 boundaries in a wonderful 148 runs from only 116 deliveries. Matthew West (130, 134b) was equally impressive performance, hitting 15 boundaries in his innings as Parktown laboured in the field.

Morteza Manack (38) and Reecy Reddy (25*) contributed 63 runs between them towards the end of the innings, helping St David’s to a mammoth total of 385/3 from their 50 overs.

Parktown, however, didn’t go down without a fight. Yahya Baba batted exceptionally well for an unbeaten century, making 105 from 131 balls, with 11 boundaries. Brent Mandizha (51, 44b) also made use of the batting-friendly conditions.

Both sides’ top performers with the ball, Uwais Mahomed (Parktown) and Avela Sibisi (St David’s) claimed the same figures, picking up two wickets for 43 runs. The target of 386 was simply a bridge too far Parktown, however, and they came up 143 runs short.
