  • Pearson take the Cape by storm, but Bishops proves a step too far

Pearson 1st XI 2024 (Photo provided)

Pearson spent the weekend in the Western Cape, taking on Paul Roos Gimnasium, Somerset College and Bishops Diocesan College.

After two stunning successes against Paul Roos and Somerset, the boys from Gqeberha finally met their match when they tackled Bishops on Sunday.

They started their tour in Stellenbosch, where Cayden Wilson struck 64 against Paul Roos to help the visitors post 149 all out in a limited overs fixture.

Cornel Swart responded with a masterful 74 not out, but Jude Septoo‘s 3/16, which tore through the tail-end of the Paul Roos batting order, was just enough to see the visitors to a narrow four-run victory.

On Saturday, Pearson outmuscled Somerset College, after both teams performed well at the crease. Captain Esa Gangat led their charge with an unbeaten innings of 75 runs.

Chad Ayford (60) and Owethu Moyi (40) helped Somerset lay down a challenge as they totalled 242/8 after their 50 overs, but Gangat bludgeoned 11 boundaries to power his team to the win in the 44th over, with six wickets in hand.

Pearson’s biggest challenge of the weekend was always going to be Bishops, though. The southern suburbs’ powerhouse has been impeccable form in the year of the school’s 175th anniversary.

Coming off a stunning win against Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday, after a gruelling battle that lasted 123 overs, the Bishops’ bowlers were straight back into the action on Sunday and they responded well to dismiss the visitors for a slender 121.

Michael Kotze spearheaded the bowling attack, removing three batsmen for only 17 runs in 10 overs. Six of those overs were maidens, which piled a huge amount of pressure onto the visitors.

When Bishops replied, they quickly realised they were in for a stiff challenge as Sulaymaan Gangat and his older brother, Esa, reduced the hosts to 13/2 in the early going.

Despite further successes for the brothers and Cayde Wilson, Pearson’s low total meant Bishops could play patiently, and that’s exactly what they did, to add another victory to their impressive record.

Kashief Joseph set Bishops up for the win by smashing five sixes in an innings of 48. When he was out, a victim of Esa Gangat, the home side needed only 40 runs for victory.

In the 23rd over, Waco Bassick (1*) and Sam Stavely-Alexander (10*) scored the winning run to keep Bishops’ long winning streak alive.

Despite the loss, Pearson will be delighted by their players’ performances over the weekend, and they’ll be keen to return to the win column when they face Dan Pienaar on 10 February.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Waterkloof 266/9 (Divan Behrens 76, Marcus Bakker 51, Riley Miller 32, Beukes van den Berg 28, Alex Volschenk 21; GN van Zyl 2/34, Gerhard Engelbrecht 2/51); Menlopark 218 (Dian van Zyl 84, James Bronkhorst 39; Jayden Blom 5/46, Jacques van Niekerk 4/16). Waterkloof wen met 48 lopies.

Potchefstroom Volkskool 334/5 (Diaan van der Merwe 112, Louis van Wyk 83, Ruan Smith 52, Berno de Klerk 35, Attie Liebenberg 28; Morne Prinsloo 2/47); Hoërskool Centurion 163 (Charl Prinsloo 69, Judah Phillips 36; Dian Liebenberg 5/31, Devan Oberholzer 2/27). Potchefstroom Volkskool wen met 171 lopies.

  • DAY 4 | Hansen stars as Selborne retains ITEC title

Selborne College’s talisman Liam Hansen netted four goals to lead his side to a comfortable 12-8 victory over Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in the final of the Grey College ITEC Water Polo Tournament in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Hansen and his teammates were superb throughout the tournament and remained unbeaten after finishing atop Pool B before cruising past their opponents in the knockout stages.

Affies were equally impressive throughout the weekend and, led by the sharp-shooting Alexander Kelbrick, had set their sights on redemption after losing last year’s final 5-11 against the same opponent.

The first chukka of the match was one to savour, with both sides playing an attacking brand of water polo. Meanwhile, both shot-stoppers, Matt Bean and Etienne Nortje, were solid between the sticks.

Kelbrick opened the scoring for his side, before Selborne’s skipper, Daniel Breetzke, levelled matters.

The champions went on the attack again and were duly rewarded when Hansen and Connor Maree netted to put them into a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter.

In the second chukka, Selborne turned up the heat and opened up a four-goal advantage at the break, leading 7-3.

The final two chukkas were highly entertaining, as Kelbrick and Hansen recorded hattricks, with Affies making up some ground to leave the outcome of the contest still in the balance as time ticked away.

Selborne led 8-6 in the final quarter, and, with a successful defence of the ITEC title beckoning, they extended their advantage once more through Daniel Breetzke, Kairon Roux, Dominic Stegmann, and Hansen to finish four goals clear of Affies.

The back-to-back champions received a late red card when Maree infringed in the pool, but it did little to slow their charge to capture the crown as they completed the tournament unbeaten.

Earlier in the day, in a thriller, Glenwood High edged Stirling 11-10 to finish in seventh place, while Pretoria Boys High thumped Pearson High 13-5 and took ninth spot.

There was a happy ending for the hosts as they took a 10-8 win over Jeppe, which sewed up fifth spot, while Northwood had the measure of Grey High, beating the side from Gqeberha 7-4 to claim the bronze medal.

    Results: Day 4

Pretoria Boys High 13-5 Pearson High School
Glenwood High School 11-10 Stirling High

Wynberg Boys’ High 1st XI (Photo provided)

Wynberg Boys’ High wrapped up their weekend in Gqeberha in style with two wins on the trot against Grey High School.

Paul James stood out for the visiting squad, showcasing his all-round abilities.

On Saturday, the hosts experienced early success through Likhona Gcora‘s bowling, but James’ 107-run stay wrestled away control of the game for Wynberg.

James backed up that performance on Sunday, in a T20, weighing in with another solid knock of 71 runs from 43 deliveries after earlier leading the Wynberg bowlers with a return of 3/4 from two overs as Grey was bowled out for 131.

Michail Tarentaal contributed a well-played 47 in Saturday’s match before Grey’s Xander Elkington sent him packing, tantalisingly close to a half-century.

After the Cape Town school had posted 261 all out, Divan Linde (3/8) and Luke Kleinsmith (2/16) inflicted damage on the hosts’ attempts at a fightback, which was stopped short on 162, despite a battling 71 from Kian Cambier.

Elkington stood out for Grey again on Sunday, removing both Wynberg openers, but it was too little, too late as Beni Hansen (19*) and Divan Linde (17*) saw the touring side to a comfortable win.

Wynberg will hope to take the momentum they built up on their tour of Gqeberha into their showdown with high-flying Rondebosch Boys’ High next Saturday.

Grey High travels to Bloemfontein to renew their long-standing rivalry with their namesakes, Grey College.

    Summarised Scorecards

    4 February

Grey High 131/10 (Kian Cambier 40, Marco Giaconi 32; Paul James 3/4, Luke Kleinsmith 2/18, Michail Tarentaal 2/29); Wynberg Boys’ High 135/2 (Paul James 71; Xander Elkington 2/27). Wynberg Boys’ High won by eight wickets (T20).

    3 February

Wynberg Boys’ High 261/10 (Paul James 107, Michail Tarentaal 47, Divan Linde 33, Xavier Garvs 22; Nathan Howell 3/50, Tristan Grundling 3/63, Likhona Gcora 2/15); Grey High 162/10 (Kian Cambier 71; Divan Linde 3/8, Luke Kleinsmith 2/16). Wynberg Boys’ High won by 99 runs (Declaration).

  • Clifton sneaks by Glenwood, lightning ends Michaelhouse vs College

Glenwood and Clifton College shared a splendid battle on Dixon’s Field on Saturday, where runs were hard to come by, but Clifton eventually eked out a thrilling four-run victory.

After winning the toss, the visitors batted first, but they were stung early by Bandile Mbatha‘s dismissal of opening batsman Zach Williamson.

Cohen Naidoo, Rivan Moodley and Shahzaad Perumal all made contributions in the upper teens, but Glenwood’s bowlers dictated matters. It looked especially dire for Clifton when they stumbled from 51/2 to 58/6 as Daniel Gunawardena and Kyle Bryan put the skids on their batting effort.

Callum Watson, in at eight, then played a match-winning innings, and his eighth-wicket partnership with Gabriel Vermeulen, worth 45 runs, proved to be the difference between victory and defeat.

Watson top scored for Clifton, hitting six fours in his 39 from 59 balls, while Vermeulen contributed 20 from 57.

The visitors were eventually all out for 140. It wasn’t a big total, but Dixon’s is a very big field and usually kind to bowlers. Frankly, Clifton should have been pleased with that score, considering the predicament that had found themselves in when they lost their sixth wicket.

Daniel Gunawardena did a fine job with the ball for Glenwood, snaring 3/21 from his 10 overs, while Bandile Mbatha recorded four maidens in his 10-over return of 2/19. Tidy, as always, Kyle Bryan claimed 2/23 from 10.

Glenwood’s pursuit of 141 for victory started poorly. They lost the first four men in their order for only 30 runs as Shahzaad Perumal created havoc among the Green Machine’s batsmen.

Bandile Mbatha put the brakes on the Clifton bowlers, however, as he and Sibonelo Phewa turned 30/4 into 63/5, before Phewa was out for 20 from 27, with four fours.

Kyle Bryan offered Mbatha support for a while, but Shahzaad Perumal sent him packing, too.

There was little else of note from the Glenwood batsmen as Mbatha put up a defiant but lone fight. He was the last man out, bowled by Tim Saulez for 52, with the home team four runs shy of Clifton, on 136 all out. Mbatha had spent 98 balls in the middle and hit four fours.

Shahzaad Perumal shone with figures of 4/26 from 10, while Shiraz Perumal also got in on the act, snapping up 3/27 from his 10.

Rivan Moodley bowled tidily, taking 1/30 in 10, and Tim Saulez, who secured the heart-stopping win, finished with 1/13 from 4.3 overs.

Lightning put paid to the match between Michaelhouse and Maritzburg College, played on the Roy Gathorne Oval in Balgowan, after College had completed their 50 overs.

The visitors had mustered 165/8, with Michael Gibson‘s 44 from 67 balls, which included just two fours, their best effort. Michaelhouse bowled tightly, surrendering only six fours to College, with four other batsmen managing only one boundary each.

Opener Llewelyn Sutherland grafted hard for 33 from 82 deliveries, while Chad Mason also doggedly applied himself, making 29 from 76.

Jean-Luc Rey was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2/24 from 10 overs, while Nicholas Baker took 1/4 from a single over.

    Summarised scores

Clifton College 140/10 (Callum Watson 39, Gabriel Vermeulen 20, Rivan Moodley 19; Daniel Gunawardena 3/21, Bandile Mbatha 2/19, Kyle Bryan 2/23); Glenwood 136/10 (Bandile Mbatha 52, Sibonelo Phewa 20; Shahzaad Perumal 4/26, Shiraz Perumal 3/27) Clifton College won by 4 runs.

Maritzburg College 165/8 (Michael Gibson 44, Llewelyn Sutherland 33, Chad Mason 29; Jean-Luc Rey 3/24, Nicholas Baker 1/4); Michaelhouse did not bat due to lightning.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Sentraal 162 (Pieter van Biljon 58*, Ekstras 40, JP Jonker 20; Meyer Pretorius 4/20, Nathan Swanepoel 3/41). Hoërskool Sasolburg 145 (Ekstras 29, Wiandré Singleton 26, Meyer Pretorius 24, Liam Singleton 21; Pieter van Biljon 5/32). Sentraal wen met 17 lopies.

Jim Fouché 118 (Ekstras 28, Cobus Wilken 26, Shermi Paulsen 22; Diego de Sousa 6/20, Onalenna Molelale 2/29). St Dominic’s College 33 (Ekstras 21; Lian Theron 4/9, Marco de Lange 2/12). Jim Fouché wen met 85 lopies.

Voortrekker 188 (Juan Theunissen 60, JD van Wyk 25, Ekstras 24, Craig Mann 23; Donovan Mouton 6/29, FJ Labuschagne 2/28). Welkom Gimnasium 191/2 (Kayden Barrows 100, Dean Katzin 56; Juan Theunissen 1/31). Welkom Gimnasium wen met agt paaltjies.

Witteberg 135 (Ekstras 28, Zander Fourie 20; Janco Maass 4/33, GJ Wessels 2/25, Hendro Boardman 2/29). Goudveld 138/5 (Ruben Crous 48*, Munro Heiberg 33; Zander Fourie 3/30). Goudveld wen met vyf paaltjies.

Hoërskool Trio 116 (Danie Fourie 28, Thuto Kekane 21, Miguel Menino 20; Stian Kruger 5/34, Devanté Claasens 4/31). Fichardtpark 89 (Stian Kruger 25; Bokang Mohasa 4/6, Myburg Jacobs 3/29, Gabriel Mochabela 2/18). Hoërskool Trio wen met 27 lopies.

  • Bestendige Conradie deurslaggewend in Zwarries sege

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Zwartkop 185 (Nicholas Conradie 56, Zandre van Staden 32, Wihan Gelderblom 26; Andreas Jansen 5/25, Hanno van Zyl 3/30, Ignus Ferreira 2/31); Hoërskool Pietersburg 151 (Nicholaas Oerlemans 40, AJ Galloway 24, Stephan Swanepoel 22; Vincent Matraiotti 2/14, Liam van Wyk 2/30, Rowan McLaren 2/36). Hoërskool Zwartkop wen met 34 lopies.

Midstream College 280 (Jeandré Lourens 56, Jean Holtzhauzen 44, Dian de Villiers 41, Maarten Nortje 24, Ricus Cilliers 24; Enock Marima 5/45, Anton Lourens 2/44); Ben Vorster 167 (Njabulo Maseko 40, Lourens Kriel 21, Enock Marima 21, Junior Ndlovu 20; Xander Senekal 5/34). Midstream College wen met 113 lopies.

Marais Viljoen 391/9 (Tyron Bouw 106, Nathan Coleske 70, Jordan Baijnath 60*, Aldré Huyzers 43, Declan Botes 28, Nathan Bailey 26; Ona Senokwane 4/69, Lethabo Memani 2/58); Hoërskool Lichtenburg: 202 (Douw Jacobs 80, Lethabo Memamni 29; Ruben Kruger 4/12, Abdullah Tadwala 3/35, Declan Botes 2/36). Marais Viljoen wen met 189 lopies.

  • Bishops weather Weges’ two-pronged attack in Paarl

Bishops Diocesan College First XI, 2024 (Photo provided)

Bishops Diocesan College maintained their unblemished record for the year by weathering a spirited Paarl Boys’ High challenge away from home on Saturday.

The hosts’ Wege brothers nearly brought an end to Bishops’ winning streak, but the peninsular powerhouse eked out another impressive victory after a gruelling unlimited overs’ battle.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, however, Bishops found themselves in hot water, with Ronaldo Windvogel capturing two wickets before any runs were on the board.

Thaafier Japhta stopped the rot, making a well-struck 65, to give the hosts’ batting lineup a much-needed injection of runs, but he was merely a spectator as Christiaan Wege picked off his teammates at the other end.

Wege removed five of the visiting batsmen, including Japhta, before Waco Bassick and Peyton Leigh salvaged the visitors’ innings with a superb partnership of 94 runs.

Leigh anchored their stay, stubbornly facing 71 deliveries for his 21 runs, while Bassick continued his phenomenal run of form, bludgeoning 12 boundaries in a crucial knock of 88 runs.

Bishops reached 229 before Aiden Batt finally took care of Bassick in the 70th over to bring the visitors’ innings to an end.

Wege’s bowling had left the door open for the Boishaai batsmen, but Tiaan Louw rocked them early on, dismissing Wege before Bassick also struck to leave Boishaai flustered on 7/2.

Johan Wege then made his presence felt as he and Dian van der Westhuizen shared a 63-run partnership before Leigh ended it by sending Van der Westhuizen’s wickets tumbling.

Wege resolutely launched a valiant solo effort to take his side to the win. He tallied 97 from 157 deliveries before Leigh trapped him in front within touching distance of a century. Bishops triumphed by 32 runs.

It was an exhilarating battle and another impressive performance from Bishops, who are enjoying a dominant season as the school celebrates its 175th anniversary. They play Pearson next in a T20 on Sunday.  The visitors from the Eastern Cape will be seeking to claim their biggest scalp yet.

Meanwhile, Hoërskool Durbanville beat DF Malan by the narrowest of margins in their limited overs match.

After Xander van Aarde smashed 62 runs at the tail end to help Durbies to 222, Calla du Toit’s three wickets for eight runs in five overs played a massive role in restricting DF Malan to 221/8.

  • Kingswood and Framesby trade wins, St Andrew’s draw vs Graeme College

Kingswood and Framesby trade wins, St Andrew’s draw vs Graeme College

Kingswood College and Framesby spent the weekend in battle on the City Lords field in Makhanda. On Friday, Framesby cruised to a five-wicket T20 victory, but Kingswood turned the tables to take the spoils in Saturday’s 50-overs match.

The visitors restricted Kingswood to 115/7 on Friday, with Juan Grigor snaring two batsmen with consecutive deliveries to damage Kingswood’s run tempo in the 16th over.

Opener Dewan Wessels‘ knock of 41 runs then steered Framesby into a comfortable position from which Taine Douw (26*) and Ethan Terblanche (7*) could secure the win.

Kingswood responded well on the following day.

Ross Thompson struck 11 boundaries and contributed 71 runs as they posted 262/7 in their 50 overs. He was supported well by Christopher Zimmerman, who missed out on a fifty by only five runs, while Tapiwa Zhanda (31) and Alistair Knott (34) added valuable runs at both ends of the innings.

In reply, Ethan Terblanche made 45 runs for Framesby before Jack Collet sent his wickets flying.

Facing a big run chase, the boys from Gqeberha came up well short, bowled out for 190, as Collet and Daniel Jakins scalped three apiece.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, St Andrew’s College took on local rivals, Graeme College, in Makhanda.

College batted first and Laurie Apps’ unbeaten 69 runs was the key innings in their 205 all out, which took 63 overs to compile.

Marcus Williams and Murray Tyson picked up three wickets each for Graeme, and made life difficult for the hosts’ tailenders, but Apps stood firm, weathering 108 deliveries to help his side beyond 200.

Williams was in on the action again when Graeme College took to the crease, Patiently, he faced 92 deliveries and scored 34 runs for the visitors, who, although not scoring at an impressive rate, batted tenaciously.

The game had slowed to a crawl by the end of the day, with St Andrew’s recording seven consecutive maiden overs, before play was brought to a close.

  • DHS down Northwood, Swart stars for Hilton

Northwood‘s 1st XI made the short trip to Durban High School on Saturday for a showdown on the Theobald Oval and they found what many teams have discovered on recent trips to the home of DHS cricket – an uncompromising, disciplined and scrappy unit, playing good cricket.

That combination secured DHS a 74-run win. It didn’t come as a surprise. Something very good has been brewing on School’s campus, with the 1st XI displaying a steely spine and going from strength to strength.

The Theobald Oval doesn’t easily reward batsmen with runs and boundaries, so a total of 192/6 after 50 overs by DHS was no easy target for the visitors.

The Horseflies relied mostly on players chipping in here and there, which has been one of the keys to their success, before Jared Havermann, batting at seven, delivered an innings which made a real difference. He partnered with Bayanda Majola for an unbroken stand of 97, with Havermann hitting nine fours and a six in his 59 not out, which came from 68 balls. Majola finished on 18 not out from 45 balls.

Opener Omar Ismaeel weighed in with a patient 29 from 70 at the top of the order, while four others contributed scores in the teens.

Jordan Matthews excelled for the Knights, capturing 3/21 in his 10 overs, which included the wickets of top order batsmen Sibusiso Msibi, Ethan Cooper and Semal Pillay. Harlee Jagga produced an economical wicket-taking spell, picking up 2/26 from 10, while Ben Cilliers kept DHS on the defensive, claiming 1/28 from his 10.

Northwood’s reply got off to a stuttering start as Bayanda Majola accounted for Alistair Duncan and Semal Pillay removed Tuswa Phetha, leaving the visitors without their opening batsmen, with fewer than 10 runs on the scoreboard. Then, Harlee Jagga followed, another victim of Majola, as the visitors’ total dipped into double figures.

Thayin Kuppin, in at three, stood firm, however. He made 39, the highest score of the innings, facing 74 balls, which included four fours, before he was the sixth man out with the total on 94.

Jordan Matthews grafted hard for 17 from 50 and Mfana Shange battled his way to 22 from 33 before he was the last man out with the total on 118.

The wickets were shared among the DHS bowlers, with all six men used removing at least one batsman each. Majola, with 2/17 from seven, set School on the way to victory, while Semal Pillay returned 2/29 from nine.

Zaid Motala, who finished with 1/13 from seven, exerted serious pressure on the visitors, while Dalan Naraidu dished up more of the same, snaring 1/4 from 3.2 overs.

After a hesitant start to the season, Hilton College appears to be back on course. On Saturday, their match against Kearsney College on the Hart-Davis Oval was rained out in mid-afternoon, but not before the talented Charles Swart had stolen the show.

He made an unbeaten 100, facing 107 balls, 11 of which he dispatched for four and another for six, to steer Hilton to 234/6 after their 50 overs. Jayden Roux lent good support, making 33 from 69, as the pair put on 53 for the third wicket.

Kyle Christie gave the Hilton innings a massive boost at the end, blasting three sixes and two fours in an entertaining 13-ball knock, which resulted in an unbeaten 31. Ben Hockly and James Ogilby added 20 runs each as the home team produced a healthy-looking scorecard.

Kearsney captain Ross Coetzee took 2/37 in 10, while Michael Groom was miserly, picking up 1/9 from five overs.

The visitors then responded with 120/3 from 25 overs before an afternoon storm deposited heavy rain onto the field and brought the match to an early end.

Cameron Veenstra led the way for Kearsney, making 39 from 63 balls, while Coetzee continued his outstanding form, striking four fours in his 28 not out from 29 deliveries.

Kyle Christie followed up his explosive innings with a return of 1/8 from four overs with the new ball.

One thing Hilton will want to improve upon is their bowling discipline- 21 wides in 25 overs is not a statistic that 1st XI coach David Griffiths will want to see repeated.
