In Centurion verwelkom Hoërskool Centurion ‘n sterk Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom.

  • Boland Landbou, Boishaai and HTS Drostdy take midweek T20 victories

Boland Landbou, Boishaai and HTS Drostdy take midweek T20 victories

Marius du Plessis led the charge for Boland Landbou on all fronts as they beat Fairmont in a T20 battle on Tuesday.

With 62 runs off his bat and a bowling haul of four wickets for only 10 runs, Du Plessis spearheaded Boland to an easy 58-run victory.

Fairmont enjoyed early success through Daniel Breeders and Daniel Anderson, who had the visitors under pressure at 29/3.

Du Plessis’ introduction to the crease, however, boosted the Landbou innings as he bludgeoned 11 boundaries, including four sixes, to reach his total in only 39 deliveries.

In reply, Justin Passman struck a stubborn 46 off of 26 deliveries against the farmers.

The Boland Landbou bowlers ripped through the rest of the Fairmont lineup, though, and restricted them to just 85/9 after Stefan Conradie, at last, sent Passman packing.

Paarl Boys’ High bounced back after their weekend’s defeat against Rondebosch to beat Parel Vallei in Somerset West.

Gideon du Toit (66) and JJ van der Sandt (31) played well to build a partnership of 62 runs for Boishaai after the hosts had won the toss and elected to field.

When Sibulele Makaleni made the breakthrough for Parel Vallei, dismissing Van der Sandt with the help of Sevi Barlow‘s safe pair of hands, Christiaan Wege stepped up and contributed a vital, unbeaten 36 runs.

Wege, then, transferred that energy into Boishaai’s defence, claiming three wickets and a catch as the hosts were restricted to 129 all out.

Aiden Batt got the visitors off to a flying start by striking with the first delivery of the Parel Vallei innings. Despite some fight from Marco Karsten (34) and Henry Jones (25) later on in the innings, PV fell short by 32 runs after their 20 overs.

Both Karsten and Jones were dismissed by the combination of Johan Wege pocketing catches off deliveries by his brother, Christiaan.

This weekend, Boishaai takes on Bishops Diocesan College, who have been dominant in the year that they celebrate their 175th anniversary.

In Durbanville, HTS Drostdy‘s Stephan van der Merwe cracked 39 runs off 17 deliveries to see his side to a comfortable win away from home against Curro.

A freak accident meant Reece Bald, unfortunately, had to retire after the second delivery of the match. His exit led the home team to stumble and post only 77/6, which Van der Merwe and co chased down in 6.1 overs.

    Summarised Scorecards

Boland Landbou 143/9 (Marius du Plessis 62, Kobus Conradie 26, Jan-Albert van Niekerk 23; Daniel Anderson 3/22, Daniel Beelders 3/28); Fairmont 85/9 (Justin Passman 46; Marius du Plessis 4/10, Tiaan Ryke 2/10). Boland Landbou won by 58 runs.

Paarl Boys’ High 161/6 (Gideon du Toit 66, Christiaan Wege 36*, JJ van der Sandt 31; Henry Jones 2/21, Sibulele Makaleni 2/46); Parel Vallei 129 (Marco Karsten 34, Christopher Hughes 28, Henry Jones 25; Christiaan Wege 3/19, Aiden Batt 2/12). Paarl Boys’ High won by 32 runs.

Curro Durbanville 77/6 (Caleb Jonkers 23; Bryan Cochrane 2/15); HTS Drostdy 80/3 (Stephan van der Merwe 39*; Daniel Myburgh 2/20). HTS Drostdy won by seven wickets.

  • Top performances at RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta

The 116th RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta drew over 1 000 boats to the Victoria Lake Rowing Club at Germiston Lake on the weekend, with the event producing thrilling racing, some record-breaking performances, and many reasons to be optimistic about the future of South African rowing.

The competition, which drew entrants from across the country, included all ages, from school to masters’ competitors, aged in their seventies and eighties.

Among the participants were the RMB National Squad, South Africa’s senior Olympic rowing team, who turned out for their clubs. The National Sprints Regatta formed part of their preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The RMB VLC Sprints features a unique format, integrating various age groups and divisions, which allows for school age competitors, from u16 and up, to compete against their rowing idols in the A, B and C divisions.

In the younger age groups, u14 and u15, for both boys and girls, the competition remains confined to peer-on-peer racing.

St Mary’s Waverley‘s Manila Price excelled by powering her way into the women’s single scull final.

There were some outstanding performances from St Stithians College‘s boys, who captured the men’s A coxed fours title, while also taking second place in the men’s B eight.

Meanwhile, St Benedict’s College lifted the overall trophy after accumulating the most points in the event, while St Dunstan’s College shone by earning first and second places in the men’s B division, despite taking on senior opposition.

St Benedict's added another winning chapter to their story of rowing excellence.

There was also success for the local Germiston High School, who performed well in the age group racing, ahead of the South African Schools Championships in March.

Among the prominent athletes in action were Katherine Williams and Holly Crews in the women’s double sculls, Paige Badenhorst and Courtney Westley, and University Games’ medallists Chloe Cresswell and Nadia Gaspari.

In the men’s pairs category, Christopher Baxter and James Mitchell, John Smith and Henry Torr, and Adriaan Venter and Luc Daffarn provided thrilling contests.

Christopher Baxter and John Smith, in the men’s pair, and Courtney Westley, in the women’s single scull, have already qualified for the Olympic Games.

It was, however, Katherine Williams, a member of the RMB National Squad, who took the women’s single scull victory and set a new course record in the process.

Afterwards, an ecstatic Williams said: “I was able to stick to my race plan, without having to make too many adjustments and look forward to the big sprint. The potential to see some bigger boats going to World Champs is super exciting, so I’m very excited for the future.”

Paige Badenhorst, who finished second, commented: “The standard was good, very high. Such close racing! It was epic right onto the line.” Badenhorst said the regatta was an important step in the build-up to the Olympics, adding: “It’s all about practice and races in the bank.”

Third-place finisher and Olympic qualifier Courtney Westley highlighted the participation of juniors in the race: “I think it was great to have juniors in the race, as well. It’s really cool to have them coming in and pushing the u23s and the seniors to go even faster.”

Competition in the girls' events was tight, with St Mary's Waverley, one of established powers of schools' rowing, in the thick of the action.

In the men’s pairs, James Mitchell and Chris Baxter powered their way to victory in a new course record time. Mitchell said: “We stuck to our guns, our race plan, committed hard to it, and believed through the middle. It’s fantastic to have broken the course record. Chuffed with that.”

“It’s always going to be tight racing when it comes to the national squad, and there is great competition between the pairs. It’s good to come out on top,” Baxter said.

Henry Torr, who finished second in the men’s pairs with John Smith, reflected: “We had a good day out. Every race gets closer to May, every race gets closer to the Olympics, and it’s really important to make them all count.”

Grant Dodds, RMB National Squad Technical Performance Manager, declared himself happy with the National Sprints Regatta: “The event was a great success and a vital part of preparing for the Olympics and moving the sport forward.

“We thank our dedicated sponsors RMB for recognising the potential of our South African rowers and making events like these possible year after year.”

Lucy Lightfoot, the Head of Brand at RMB, gave her stamp of approval, saying: “This incredible event gives front-row seats to the amazing diversity and talent we have in rowing in South Africa.

“It’s particularly impressive to see the levels of excellence our female competitors are reaching.

“We are proud of our athletes and proud to be associated with this exciting sport. It’s exciting to see South Africans having the opportunity to compete against some of the best athletes in the world.”

  • Selborne seeks consistency in ITEC title defence

The 2024 water polo season is in full swing, and the action this coming weekend turns to the ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament in Bloemfontein.

The tournament will see 10 schools from across the country go head-to-head over four days in search of the title.

One team that will be out to dominate the event is East London’s Selborne College, who are the defending champions.

The squad heads to the Free State after a strong sixth place finish against an elite field in last week’s SAC Shield at St Andrew’s College in Makhanda. There, they recorded a win over one of their pool rivals in Bloemfontein, Grey High, and they also beat Clifton College, St Stithians, and Westville. They took the eventual silver medallists, Bishops, to a penalty shootout, which they lost 4-5, after the teams had finished regulation time level at 9-9.

The side from East London is the only ITEC participant that has taken part in a competitive tournament so far this season.

Selborne are drawn in a tough pool, alongside Pearson High School, Pretoria Boys High, Grey High, and Glenwood High School. The other pool features Grey College, Northwood, Jeppe, Affies and Stirling.

Speaking exclusively to SuperSport Schools ahead of the tournament, Selborne head coach Storm Siebert said his side is in high spirits after their showing in Makhanda. However, they’re aiming to be more consistent.

“We’re feeling very motivated and encouraged by our SAC Shield performance,” he said.

“We definitely have a lot to work on, but we are heading in the right direction.

“Last season was a tough one for our boys, as we struggled for consistency throughout the season. While posting some good results, we couldn’t step it up in the important stages of tournaments.”

Selborne’s run at the title in Makhanda was ended by an 8-3 defeat to Rondebosch in the quarterfinals.

Last year, without having to deal with the high pressure of the very tough SAC Shield competition, Selborne played with confidence at the ITEC Tournament, and they’ll endeavour to adopt a similar mindset in their efforts to repeat as champions.

Siebert said he’s pleased that most of the players from last year’s team have returned, which has been beneficial in the early going of a challenging season for his side.

“We figured out last year at the ITEC tournament that we have to be at our best in every game, regardless of who we are playing. We will take that same mindset into this year’s tournament,” he said.

“Our core group of players has remained the same, which is going to help us gain that consistency throughout the year.

“We have tried to introduce a couple of new players into the side to help gain the valuable experience that they need moving forward,” he added.

Selborne opens its campaign against Pretoria Boys High on day one, Thursday, 1 February, at 16:00.

They tackle Grey High and Glenwood on Friday before concluding their group-stage encounters with an Eastern Cape derby against Pearson on day three at 08:00.

  • St Benedict’s College lift AISJ Invitational Basketball title

Westville Boys' High were unbeaten in Pool B of the u19 boys' competition, but they fell to St John's in the semi-finals of the AISJ Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Westville Boys’ High were unbeaten in Pool B of the u19 boys’ competition, but they fell to St John’s in the semi-finals of the AISJ Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The first big basketball event of 2024 drew a host of top teams from around South Africa to Gauteng over the weekend for the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) Invitational High School Basketball Tournament, with teams testing their mettle at boys’ and girls’ u16 and u19 levels.

In the boys’ u19 competition, it was St Benedict’s all the way at they outplayed St John’s College 54-30 in the final to grab gold in impressive fashion.

Bennies’ passion and hunger was displayed during their unbeaten run in their pool matches, which included a 41-29 win over the hosts, AISJ, and further victories over Michael Mount, Saheti and Hilton College.

Their opponents in the final, St John’s College, emerged from Pool B, even though they had finished with a record of two and two. Westville Boys’ High topped the standings, after wins over St John’s, Maru-a-Pula School, from Botswana, Sacred Heart and St Stithians.

St John’s, third in Pool B, then defeated AISJ, who had finished second in Pool A, 40-37 in the cross-pool playoffs. Westville took on their compatriots from KZN, Hilton College, and comfortably won their showdown 46-29.

As things worked out, St Benedict’s ended up facing Michael Mount in the semis, and Westville took on St John’s once again.

Bennies had won by only one point against Michael Mount in their Pool A match, but when they met again, they recorded a more comfortable 40-34 victory. Westville, who beat St John’s 40-38 in Pool B, couldn’t repeat their winning ways in the rematch and the Johannesburg school scored a 42-33 win.

In the final, it was all about Bennies, who added the AISJ title to their previous wins, in late 2023, in the Kearsney Independent Schools Stayers’ Basketball Tournament and the Pharaoh Inanda Hoops. Westville finished third after a big 57-24 win over Michael Mount.

St John’s tasted title-winning success, nonetheless, after their u16 side ran roughshod over the competition to take gold with an emphatic 57-39 victory over ESCA.

In the girls’ u16 competition, Botswana’s Maru-a-Pula cruised through their Pool B games, while Saheti finished top of Pool A. Maru-a-Pula then accounted for AISJ in the cross-pool playoffs, while Saheti ran out 19-point winners over Herschel.

Unfortunately for Maru-a-Pula, their luck ran out against St Stithians in the semi-finals, where they lost 16-22, while Saheti powered their way to a 40-24 win over Redhill.

Saints had an upset on their mind as for the second time in the day they beat a team that was favoured over them, taking down Saheti by a 26-17 margin to win the tournament. Maru-a-Pula settled for third after a 25-10 win over Redhill.

Herschel and AISJ finished top of their respective pools in the u19 girls’ competition, and they duly went on to meet in the final. There was, sadly for the home supporters, no fairytale ending for AISJ as Herschel claimed a 41-30 victory to complete an unbeaten run through the tournament.

    Finals

u16 Girls: St Stithians 26-17 Saheti
    u16 Boys:
    St John’s 57-39 ESCA
    u19 Girls:
    Herschel 41-30 AISJ
    u19 Boys:
    St Benedict’s 54-30 St John’s

  • Midstream glip verby Pieties in naelbytstryd

Nicholas Conradie was die Zwarries se keurkolwer.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Midstream College 245 (Dian de Villiers 64, Janco van Heerden 54, Jeandre Lourens 44, Ryan Strauss 25; Hanno van Zyl 5/22, Stefan Swanepoel 3/20). Hoërskool Pietersburg 231 (AJ Galloway 69, Cilliers van der Merwe 39, Philip Weterman 30, Hanno van Zyl 26; Janco van Heerden 3/29, Ricus Cilliers 3/55). Midstream College wen met 14 lopies.

Marais Viljoen 171 (Nathan Coleske 82, Declan Botes 30; Wynand Frylinck 2/23, Zandre van Staden 2/25, Layton Wilson 2/33). Hoërskool Zwartkop 112 (Nicholas Conradie 39; Nathan Coleske 4/35, Declan Botes 3/45, Jordan Baijnath 2/9).

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Middelburg: 333/8 (Reuben Brandmiller 147, Ivan Deale 61, Le Roux French 28, Shuan Taljaard 21; Leam van Zyl 4/82).   Uplands College: 180 (Leam van Zyl 34, Marley Waspe 28, Gregory Kazandjis 26; Shuan Taljaard 3/25, Hendre Nel 2/26, Eduan Strydom 2/35, Gavin Genis 2/36). Hoërskool Middelburg wen met 158 lopies.

Merensky: 114 (Rinaldo Bornman 43, Loghan Janse van Rensburg 21; Nathan Visagie 3/13, Mark van der Berg 2/12, Jayden Smith 2/15); Dinamika: 115/3 (Dean van Onselen 62*, Trent Shrives 33; Luka Heinlein 2/27). Dinamika wen met sewe paaltjies.

HTS Middelburg: 183 (Anthoni Smuts 38, Janco Aucamp 34, WJ Enslin 30, Armand Kotze 23; Waughn Steynvaart 4/33, Dandre Louw 2/29); Heidelberg Volkskool: 149 (Matt Wentzel 44, Marco Botha 22; Hanro Terblanche, Ethan Dreyer 3/37, Toy Engelbrecht 2/24).

Slegs Monnas se staatmaker, JD Landsberg, kon ‘n taamlike beurt aanmekaarslaan.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Eldoraigne: 131 (Johan Broekman 42, Ryno Mulder 22; Martin Williams 5/30, Warren Pretorius 3/35). Kemptonpark: 133/1 (Floors Mynhardt 62*, Wian Pieters 51; Johan Broekman 1/29). Kemptonpark wen met nege paaltjies.

Potchefstroom Gimnasium: 288/9 (Caiden Seleka 122, James Wood 82; Andre van Niekerk 4/37). Monument: 86 (JD Landsberg 41; Tommie Botha 4/22, Jahndre Coetzee 2/20). Potchefstroom Gimnasium wen met 202 lopies.

Montana 160 (Luca Bairos 53, Luhan Theunissen 20; Adrian Watson 4/11, Brenton Francis 3/13). Hans Moore: 161/1 (Stephan Vermaak 97, Kenhan Shaw 55*; Konrad Koukeas 1/21). Hans Moore wen met nege paaltjies.
