Diamantveld t.

KRUGERSDORP.

Hoërskool Nelspruit: 15 Le Riche Atchison, 14 Owen Steyn, 13 Ian Wood, 12 Heino Meiring, 11 Karl Erichson, 10 Theuns Meyer, 9 Andeon Pringle, 8 Braam Basson, 7 Bradley Claassen, 6 Banele Ngwenya, 5 Juan Bezant, 4 Luke Poison, 3 Ryan Venter, 2 Regard Vermaak, 1 Hugwin Heyman.

  • Preview: FNB Classic Clash – Eldoraigne vs Zwartkop

Preview: FNB Classic Clash – Eldoraigne vs Zwartkop

NewsGEldoraigne1It is May, with rain about and that means one thing; another FNB Classic Clash in Centurion between two of the area’s fiercest rivals.

Expect a cold winters day with big hits and fast break aways.

Hoërskool Eldoraigne plays host to this weekend’s much anticipated local derbies against old time foes Hoërskool Zwartkop with kick-off starting at 13:30 pm.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Eldo’s recent form has been slightly underwhelming over the past few weeks coming off of a 32-22 loss away against Merensky in Tzaneen and then drawing to Hoërskool Menlopark which some would suggest came as a bit of an upset in their favour.

However the side had a very good Easter Festival at King Edward VII, winning two out of their three matches and losing narrowly to a strong Hoërskool Durbanville team  20-17. The highlight of their tournament was beating Parktown Boys’ 38-0, where their forwards dominated the match scoring five tries between them.

The team will be looking to replicate some of that early season form to inspire the side to win another derby clash. Players to watch out for include flankers Anroux Du Plessis and Divan De Jager.

Last year Hoërskool Eldoraigne walked away victorious winning a closely contested match 18-12 in very muddy conditions. The sides could be facing similar conditions this year as the lead up to the weekend has seen some rainfall.

Zwartkop’s come into the match off the back of two consecutive wins beating HTS Middelburg last weekend 37-14 at home and beating Brakenfell recently 33-12.

Zwartkops will be looking at fullback Kieraan Krotz to provide impetus in the backline and could look to play more of a kicking game which will bring in flyhalf Jonathan Wilson’s boot. Zwarries will also be relying on their forward pack to win possession during some hard-headed scrumming and chasing down any sort of aerial play.

The sides should match up nicely with each school boasting a strong line-up of players. But who will come out on top this year?

Both sides will want to gain the bragging rights but will need to overcome the wet muddy conditions which may result in a change of tactics from the coaching staff as they enter into this much anticipated Classic Clash.

    The teams:

Eldoraigne: 15 JP Meyer, 14 Hendru Van Zyl, 13 Marchand Nel, 12 Rynahardt Gelderblom, 11 Juan Bothma, 10 Reynier Kidson , 9 Donnevin Naude, 8 Johan Coetsee, 7 Divan De Jager, 6 Anroux Du Plessis, 5 Myburgh Van Wyk, 4 Shane Henery, 3 Willie Diffenthal, 2 Wickus Diffenthal, 1Jaydon Niehaus.

Zwartkop: 15 Kieraan Krotz, 14 Stiaan Bekker, 13 Milton Naude, 12 Wihan Van Der Berg, 11  Denilson Metcalfe, 10 Jonathan Wilson, 9 Waldo Smith, 8 Nathan Van Aswegen, 7 Ian Van Der Westhuizen, 6 Jeandre Hanse, 5 Johan Van Heerden, 4 Dehan Smit, 3 Xavier Boikanyo, 2 Reagan Smith, 1 Julian Lubbe.

Durban Girls College setting the tone in KZN Coastal League

The KZN Coastal League is divided into three ranked pools.

Each team from the region competes to be part of Pool A where the best teams appear.

Durban Girls High School hosted Durban Girls College on Thursday for a league match.

The two schools are currently sitting in Pool A and if they do not defend their positions, they could be relegated to the other two pools.

Durban College is one of the strongest teams in the region and they made sure they traveled to Glenwood for a clean victory.

Their first team defeated Durban High 27-16. The u15B match was a rather challenging game for both sides but Durban College managed to keep control of their attack, gaining a 8-2 win over Durban High.

Kingsway High School, also part of the KZN Coastal League Pool A category, hosted Danville Girls High School on Thursday. The league matches were exciting to experience with both teams fighting tooth and nail in each game.

Danville’s first team could not participate but their second team managed to take one victory home. It was a stimulating second team match with both teams showing how badly they needed the win.

By the end of the first half, the teams were sitting on an equalizing 6-all score. The second half was more challenging with the pressure hanging over the players. With just a difference of one goal, Danville took the 10-9 victory against Kingsway.

Kingsway’s junior teams were very impressive, playing great netball and winning their games with superb scores. Their u14A team controlled the game with ease, only allowing their competitors a chance to score three goals. They snatched the victory with a 14-3 win against Danville.

Kingsway hosted its annual netball tournament on Saturday. The tournament was canceled due to weather conditions, but four matches were played in two Pools.

Kingsway’s second team gave Durban Girls College a challenge where they failed to gain control of the game. They won the game 19-2 against Durban Girls.

  • Van der Merwe embracing the challenges as Selborne skipper

Van der Merwe embracing the challenges as Selborne skipper

Selborne College’s first team captain, Ben van der Merwe, says he is embracing the challenge of leading a strong side as the East London team prepares to host their oldest rivals, Dale College, this coming weekend.

Van der Merwe, among eight other team members, has been selected to represent the Amathole Schools in this year’s IPT tournament, set to take place in Bloemfontein from the 24th of June to the 30th.

In an interview with SuperSport Schools during the week, the skipper outlined the positive start his side has had this season and how he’s managed to lead the side to some impressive results along the way.

“We have had a pretty good start to the season, winning some big games at the Tony Godding festival before playing well in the Netherlands tour and finishing third behind Paul Roos and SACS in the Hibbert Shield,” he said.

“In terms of the leadership role, it’s not easy, but I’ve enjoyed captaining the side.”

“The boys in grades 11 and 10 have made it easy for us as seniors. They have risen to the challenge and respect the older guys in the team.”

The current season sees Van der Merwe play his third consecutive season in black and white hoops; a feat achieved by a few players in their time at the school.

He admits, however, that getting first-team experience at an early stage has helped fast-track his game and got him used to the intensity quite early.

“I played a bit of first-team hockey in grade 10 (2021) but didn’t play many matches as we were coming out of COVID,” he revealed.

“However, I got a lot of experience learning from the older guys, and then playing last year and now leading the side has been a great learning experience.”

“Coming from u16, it’s a lot faster and more intense; starting at a young age helped me because I now know the intensity, and I can develop my skills and get better every year.”

Coming off a break last weekend, Van der Merwe and his troops will take on Dale on Friday, a team he says, they’re not undermining despite their current run this season.

“They come off a loss in their reunion this past weekend and may not have the confidence to play against us.”

“As a team, we’re very excited, we had a bye this past weekend, so the excitement has carried through from the Grey College match. We’re going to respect them, but we want to beat them in our territory.”

To beat their opposition convincingly, the side will be relying on the huge role played by their coaches, KJ Friend, and Luke Ferreira, who have contributed to the development and confidence of the side.

Other senior players to look out for in the side include a handful of the players selected for the provincial team, namely: Tre’ Gilbert, Lunga Malusi, Cade Kock, Masibulela Siswana, Daniel Sirgel, Charlie Cawell, James Carr, and Waeden Plaatjes.

The match between the two sides kicks off at 18:30 on Friday under the lights.

In other matches, St. Andrews College hosts Hudson Park, while Queens College welcomes Gqeberha’s Grey High School.

    The teams

Selborne College: Charlie Caswell, Gray van Heerden, Daniel Gaylard, Shane Stagg, Ben van der Merwe ( C ), Masibulela Siswana, Tre’ Gilbert, Daniel Conroy, Jaques van der Merwe, James Carr, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, Waeden Plaatjes, Cade Kock.

Wit Bulle stampede over The Red Army

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunsskool steamed through with a very comfortable 23 point win over King Edward VII (43-20) in Pretoria leaving the boys in red and white much to think about.

The first half saw an even match up with both teams showing some fight and not wanting to let the other side pull-away too early on.

Affies scored through  trustworthy fullback Miguel De Lange and the tenacious number nine Hendre Schoeman both putting the ball past the try line.

At halftime the score was neck and neck with Affies going into the break with a two point lead. The score sat 12-10 with KES showing some serious promise and would have felt right in with a chance.

The score ran away from The Red Army, with Affies scoring a flurry of points with outside centre Antonie Fourie and stocky hooker Ethan Van Dyk both getting stuck into the opposition. Each scoring two crucial tries.

Flyhalf Ruben Piennar converted four of his attempted seven conversions but had a solid performance throughout the match.

KES managed to score two additional tries in the second half with forwards Siphosethu Mnbelele and Thomas Beling both adding much needed points to the scoreboard.

The KES coaching staff will be disappointed with their team’s kicking display as they struggled to convert any of their kicks and will need to work on it during the week before next weekend.

The Witbulle will be hoping to carry over the momentum created against KES into next weekend’s fixture against a strong Grey College.

Grey College digging deep to face Affies this Friday

Grey College will be hosting Affies this Friday at 18:00 in an inter school match up heavily weighted.

Be sure to keep updated on the SuperSport Schools website at www.supersportschools.com.

The clash against Affies will be a tough one for Grey College, having travelled to and from Paarl in the Western Cape, causing disruptions in the team’s practice schedule due to much of the team being affected physically by the wet weather and travelling time.

The last time these schools faced each other, Grey College walked away with bragging rights having defeated Affies 3-1.

Affies, however, will be looking for their revenge and the less-than-optimum Grey side forecasts rocky waters for the team from the City of Roses.

“There is a lot hanging in the balance, that we need to put back, and establish our strength over the whole, entire program,” says Wayne Coetzee, head of hockey at Grey College.

    The teams:

Grey College: Roan Janse van Rensburg (captain), Eben Joubert, Gerrie Greyling, Jayden Leach, Jordan Verster, Wian du Plooy, Duncker Hohls, Dayne Kitching, Samu Lephoto, Luke Mosala, Dunrich Hoffmann, AC Delport, Handre van Staden, MJ Bam, Botha Barnard, Luhan Prinsloo.

Affies: Owen Kleinhans, Jacques Lamprecht, Liam de Waal, Wian van Rooyen, Uys Prinsloo, Hendrik Combrink, Thato Mamogale, Louw du Preez, Guihom Mouton, Wimpie Pohlman, Wian Boshoff, Wouter Cloete, Kyle Cronje, Henri van Tonder, Eno Swart, Wian van Schalkwyk.

Parktown Boys’ High seal victory over Northcliff

Parktown Boys’ High flanker Okwenkisi Sibeko scored a hat-trick of tries to secure a comprehensive 13 point win over Johannesburg locals Northcliff High School.

Northcliff were the first side to register points from an easily converted penalty by inside center  Luke Roos, who scored a further penalty later in the half.

The teams were evenly matched with the halftime score sitting at 7-6 to Parktown Boys’ High. Parktown carried most of the possession throughout the first half.

Winger Revel Meth had a fantastic run weaving between the Northcliff defense, where he was taken down just before the try line. He put his team in a good position to score their third try of the match through scrumhalf Thembela Folo who scored a diving try.

During the second half Northcliff were not going to back down from the challenge, scoring three  and were looking at putting together a fightback to try claw their way back into contention. Ethan Hayes, Ziyaad Bhyat and Jordan Swanepoel all adding points next to their names.

However Parktown scored again with captain Sandsiso Sitole accumulating more points this season, he was impressive in both offensive and defensive play. Along with eight man Busisizwe Mngomezulu taking the match further away from the visitors and putting the nail in the coffin.

St Stithians College walked away victorious in the annual pink-day fixture against long standing rivals St John’s College winning the match 31-19.

The two Joburg powerhouses have a rich history of playing against each other and the pink-day fixture has become a prominent feature in the two schools sporting calendars.

Since 2016 the teams match up against each other and where all funds raised on the day go towards the PinkDrive an NGO focused on Breast Cancer Awareness.

St Stithians scored two tries from their backline players, inside centre Nthabeleng Mafole and winger Tinashwe Gweshe each having a piece of the pie.

Finlay Holden, Vincent Miles and Reece Watson all scored tries for St Johns but too many errors resulted in a large number of penalties being awarded to the host side.

Saints number ten Chris Anderson had a good day in front of the poles, scoring 16 points from his placement kicks and capitalised on the opportunities presented.

St Johns will need to wait until next year to have the opportunity to take home any sort of bragging rights when they put on their bright pink socks in this derby game again.

St Stithians will be playing up against St Alban’s this coming weekend, who played in the St Stithians Easter Festival debut earlier this year. St Stithians will be going into the fixture as favourites.

The next encounter for St Johns will be facing a high spirited Parktown Boys High who are fresh from their win against Northcliff High School where they won 38-25.
