  • St Anne’s to make rugby debut at Fichardtpark’s Nashua Sports Day

St Anne’s to make rugby debut at Fichardtpark’s Nashua Sports Day

Fichardtpark’s Nashua Sports Day will see 21 schools’ first rugby teams meet in Bloemfontein on Saturday, the 4th of March, in what has grown to be the biggest school sporting event of its kind.

Kalahari High School, from Kuruman, travel to meet Frankfort’s Wilgerivier.

For the players, parents and coaching staff of Kalahari, however, the occasion is overshadowed by the tragic loss of their beloved headmaster, Mr. Freek van Rooyen, on Tuesday, 28 February.

Our thoughts are with them at this time.

Louis Botha face Hentie Cilliers, with both teams suffering defeats in their opening games of the season at the President Steyn Sports Day last weekend.

Louis Botha has still recently been producing the likes of Joseph Dweba, Ox Nché, Oupa Mohoje, Raymond Rhule, Daan Human and AJ Venter and will want to turn their season around after suffering a demoralising loss at the hands of Grey’s second team in their opener.

On the other hand, Hentie Cilliers will feel like they let the opportunity to beat JF slip last week as handling errors and confusion in the lineouts cost them dearly.

That said, these elements can be improved on and it will be interesting to see whether they can avoid repeating those same mistakes after benefitting from another week’s training.

This Saturday will also allow St Anne’s Technical High School to make their debut against Sand du Plessis.

With the school only opening in 2018, having only 400 students enrolled the high school, and rugby only being offered as an extracurricular for the boys since 2022, this will be a very inexperienced group.

With the guidance of head coach, Mr Nakedi, however, St Anne’s will be competing in the Sandveld league this year and we look forward to watching the boys from Virginia progress.

Morné Steyn is arguably Sand du Plessis’ best-known rugby export, along with Dawie Theron and Franco Smith

Bloemfontein’s St Andrews and Aliwal-Noord from the Eastern Cape will face each other in the opening match and will look to provide an exciting start to the day.

  • Follow your kids without leaving the couch – with the all-new SuperSport Schools TV channel

Follow your kids without leaving the couch – with the all-new SuperSport Schools TV channel

Following the successful launch of the SuperSport Schools streaming app in 2021, the school sport channel goes live on the World of Champions tomorrow.

The popular platform will run daily for 24 hours on DStv channel 216, broadcasting a variety of live, delayed and historical content that reflects the strong traditions and rivalries of South African school and youth sport.

Although the free app remains the primary core of SuperSport Schools, the new linear television option is an extension designed to satisfy at-home viewers.

Quite apart from the array of big-time sport lined up countrywide in the month to come, TV programming will include many gems found in archived content. Ahead of big derbies, for instance, historical past matches will be broadcast, building up the fervour that all historical showdowns generate.

There will also be a weekly ‘’Throwback Thursday’’ and ‘’Memory Monday’’, both nods to memorable achievements on school fields over the years.

    THE LINEUP

Immediate focus for both streaming and broadcast will be on The KES Water Polo Festival, the Graeme College 150th festival, Spar hockey from KZN, the St Mary’s hockey festival, the St Andrew’s netball festival, Premier Interschools netball and rugby, the Border Rugby Day, KZN schools football and the Gauteng Development League (GDL).

The GDL is especially appealing and will include age group football matches across 34 weekends from March to November. Comprising 18 clubs and schools, including teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, plus schools like Rosina Sedibane from Centurion, they will compete in nine head-to-head fixtures across a number of age groups per week.

In addition to the legacy content to be found on the linear channel, the all-new SuperSport Schools vodcast (a podcast that contains video content) will be broadcast. It touches on a variety of school sport subjects and leans towards being entertaining and informative.

Given the wealth of extraordinary achievements that occur on a weekly basis, often in remote areas and small-town schools, the new channel will also seek to highlight these for viewers who may otherwise have missed them.

The channel goes live at 8am tomorrow and will be available to subscribers from Premium to Access.

Jeppe crowned Johnny Waite Knockout champions for the first time since 1989

    PHOTO: Theo Garrun

Jeppe High School for Boys is the new Johnny Waite Knockout champions after defeating Helpmekaar-kollege yesterday by 69 runs in the final.

It was only the second Johnny Waite-title that Jeppe bagged since their first which was won back in 1989. It was also Jeppe’s first appearance in the final of the prestigious competition since 2003.

It was Helpmekaar’s first appearance in the final of the competition.

Back in 1989 Jeppe defeated St John’s College in the final with probably one of South Africa’s best cricket umpires ever Cyril Mitchley as the coach. Jeppe’s resident cricket professional, Roland Blanks, was also part of the victorious team of 1989.

Jeppe got off to a superb start in the final against Helpmekaar thanks to a 99-run opening partnership between Tshepo Stafa (53, 35b) and Kyle Jackson (48, 35b).
Jayden Brooker (23) also added a valuable 23 runs to help the champions reach 153/7 in their allotted overs.
Helpies was bowled out for 84 runs with Luke Cannon (2/7), Sipho Potsane (2/8), Ryan Hartcourt-Baldwin (2/11) and Stafa (2/14) all troubling the batsmen. Hartcourt-Baldwin was the hero in the semi-final victory over King Edward VII as he picked up a hat-trick of wickets.
Stafa was named Player of the Match for his performances with the bat and ball.
Jeppe’s second stringers also came out on top in their final to bag a unique double.

    Summarised Scorecard:

Jeppe High School for Boys 153/7 (Tshepo Stafa 53, Kyle Jackson 48, Jayden Brooker 23; Tjaart Mentz 2/40); Helpmekaar-kollege 84 (Henricus Meyer 30; Luke Cannon 2/7, Sipho Potsane 2/8, Ryan Hartcourt-Baldwin 2/11, Tshepo Stafa 2/14, Jayden Brooker 2/21). Jeppe High School for Boys won by 69 runs.

Fichardtpark will face Hoërskool Diamantveld of Kimberley in the main match of their annual Nashua Sports Day in Bloemfontein.

The main match between Fichies and Diamonds will also double-up as a Wesgrow League match. In this year’s Wesgrow competition all the schools will face each other during the season. In previous editions the schools were divided into two groups.

The clash between Hoërskool Sentraal  and Hoërskool Noord-Kaap also promises to be produce some exciting rugby.

Sentraal is coached by two former internationals in Hendré Fourie (England) and Braam van Straaten (South Africa). The Tralies has some rebuilding to do after a couple of difficult years on the rugby pitch.

Northerns got left out of Wildeklawer for 2023 as well as the Wesgrow league. So they have a point to prove this season. They will attend Menlopark’s 60th celebration festival in place of Wildeklawer.

Another highlight during the rugby matches of the sports day will be between Jim Fouché and Marlow Landbou of Cradock. These two schools have faced each other regularly in the past with the clashes mostly being tightly contested.

  • Two former SA Schools’ captains make their test debut against Windies

Two former SA Schools’ captains make their test debut against Windies

Two players, Tony de Zorzi (King Edward VII) and Gerald Coetzee (St Andrew’s School) made their test debuts for the Proteas during the first test against the West Indies at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

De Zorzi continues KES’ impressive cricketing pipeline which produced South African test cricketers like Graeme Smith, Quinton de Kock, Stephan Cook, Neil McKenzie, Ali Bacher, Adam Bacher and Dane Vilas.

De Zorzi captained the SA Schools’ side back in 2015, while also leading the national u19-side in his career. Coetzee is also a former SA Schools’ captain as he led the side in 2018.

Coetzee is Saints in Bloemfontein’s first South African test cricketer since Peter Carlstein who represented the national side between 1958 and 1964. The last test player before Coetzee, who represented Saints, is however former England captain Joe Root.

Root played for Saints in 2009 as part of an exchange program between the school and Yorkshire Cricket Club.

The duo, De Zorzi and Coetzee, is the first new caps that Shukri Conrad handed out as Protea coach as he starts his career in this new role. Conrad is a seasoned coached who had success at franchise level with the Lions as well as the Cape Cobras.

Conrad himself representend the national schools’ side of 1984 which was captained by Darryl Cullinan (Queen’s College). That year’s SA Schools’ team included players like Alan Donald (HTS Bloemfontein), Clive Eksteen (Northcliff), and Meyrick Pringle (Kingswood College).

Conrad made the Western Province side from the Avendale Cricket Club.

The test against the Windies that started today also saw a new Protea test captain in Temba Bavuma. He is an old-boy of St David’s Marist in Inanda, Johannesburg.

Grey College will be satisfied with the performances of their teams over the weekend at the 30th annual Hester van der Walt Sports Day hosted by President Steyn at the Gonval Store Park just outside Bloemfontein.

With a total of 60 rugby teams across all high school age grades playing on the day, this event was the perfect way to kick off the 2023 rugby season, allowing the respective coaches to evaluate their players and test out different combinations.

Grey College opted to use the event as part of their trials, fielding three teams on the day. Coach Jannie Geldenhuys and co will be happy with the performances put in by the boys with Grey’s experimental teams all winning their matches.

The senior players from Grey who were absent, fulfilling their summer sporting duties, will have some serious competition when they return to the squads.

Grey College’s provisional first team faced Griffons champions, Hoërskool Trio, for the first time in the penultimate match of the day.

Trio had the dream debut season in 2022, playing their first match ever at the President Steyn Sports Day against Jim Fouché, losing 20-3 in that game, but evolving over the course of the season to ultimately beat JF in the Kovsie League’s Shimla final 22-19.

Grey, however, proved too powerful for the newcomers, beating them comfortably by 38-10.

Vincent Wolhuter (fullback), David du Toit (flanker), Marno Stopforth (lock) and Pieter van der Merwe (Center) all crossed the try line in the first half, with Heinz Stockenström (flyhalf) adding two conversions. Louis Boshoff from Trio managed to convert a penalty to get his team on the board.

As expected, Grey made use of their bench to give all their available players some valuable game time. JJ Theron, Jean-Henri Smit, Martin Botha and Erich Visser all came on in the second half and continued applying the pressure.

Erich Visser also played earlier for the second team, excelling in both games.

Trio scored the first try of the second half, with Haaron Kabeya dotting down the ball behind the try line and Louis Boshoff adding the conversion to raise Trio’s score to 10.

Kabeya produced another couple of moments of magic but the visitors from Kroonstad just didn’t manage to converts these into points on the scoreboard.

As the replacements from Grey began making an impression on the game, however, the boys from Bloemfontein regained control.

Grey College’s second team overpowered HTS Louis Botha by 88-0.

Grey’s third team faced Sentraal’s first team in the opening match of the day, beating the Tralies 26-7.

Sentraal opened the scoring when winger, Pat Cloete, pinched an intercept in the seventh minute and scored. Grey was able to level the scores in the dying moments of the first half.

In the second half, Grey scored three unanswered tries and took control of the game.
