  • Speedy Van der Walt bag two records during Tuks Top 10

Speedy Van der Walt bag two records during Tuks Top 10

If Armand van der Walt (Garsfontein) can build on his performances thus far early in the schools’ athletics season we could possibly have a new South African Junior record-holder in the 100 metre sprint.

Van der Walt set a new meeting record of 10.35 seconds for boys u19 in this number during the annual Tuks Top 10-meeting hosted by Prestige College in Pretoria on Wednesday. The previous record also belonged to a Garsie with Thembo Monareng (10.38) setting it back in 2017.

The SA Junior-record belongs to Thando Dlodlo (10.11) who set it back in 2018. It was bettered in 2020 by Pututshedso Maswangane (10.06) but according to the latest ASA South African Annual it is yet to be ratified.

Dlodlo represented Prestige College and Monument during his school career.

Van der Walt’s performance in the 200m was even more impressive as he dashed over the finish line in only 20.60 seconds to set another new record. The record belonged to Paul Maluleka of Klerksdorp (21.44) since 2015.

The South African as well as African Junior record for this item belongs to Clarence Munyai with an excellent time of 20.10 seconds which he set in 2017.

Van der Walt might be built perfectly for the longer 400 metre sprint. Only time will tell if he will make the transition.

Affies’ Henco Lamberts (u17) produced the best performance of the day in the field when he won the shot put with an attempt of 19.52 metres. It brought him and his team a maximum total of a 1 000 points.

The record for this item however still stands behind Burger Lambrechts jr. of Garsfontein. He won this event back in 2015 with an attempt of 19.75m.

Wesley Badenhorst of Waterkloof also produced a sterling performance in the discus for boys u17. He won the item with a throw of 59.24m. This collected him an impressive 969 points. The record is still save as Werner Visser of Zwartkop set it at a monstrous 60.48m back in 2015.

Lamberts (52.65m) collected the bronze medal in this event. Badenhorst took the silver behind Lamberts in the shot put with an attempt of 17.68m.

Johannes Morepe of Vorentoe won the 1 500m for boys u19 in a new record time of 3 minutes and 51.74 seconds.

Morepe had to settle for second place in the 3 000m as Corné de Fouw of Monument was in top form as he won the race in 8:19.12. De Fouw’s performance was the best by a senior track athlete while he also bagged the Senior Victor Lodorum for his performances during the meeting.

De Fouw came second in the 1 500m in 3:53.92.

A youngster who performed well was Brandon Matthews (u15) of Transvalia. He won the shot put for his age group with an attempt of 18.14m with the 4kg weight. Another impressive performance was produced in the shot put for boys u16 with Menlopark’s Aiden Erasmus winning the event with an attempt of 18.38m.

Parkies’ Chris Swanepoel (u15) made the discus land for the first time at 62.54m locking in 990 points for his team. Danie Strooh of Ermelo won the discus for boys u19 with an attempt of 54.20m.

Affies won the boys team section as their ten athletes accrued an average of 904 points per athlete. Grey College of Bloemfontein came second (834) with Menlopark (814) bagging the third position.

STELLENBOSCH. – A new champion will be crowned at this year’s Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week here.

The Southern Superstars secured a bonus point victory over the Western Legends during the penultimate round to move to the top of the standings.

They have the same log points as the Northern Champions who experienced some tense moments in their 6-run victory over the defending champions, the Coastal Conquerors.

The Central Gladiators who are one point behind the two log leaders also have an outside chance to walk away with the spoils on Sunday. But both of the log leaders need to lose their respective matches.

The Superstars and the Champions will have to make sure of a victory in their final match and if they are able to bag a bonus point it might be enough to be crowned champions.

The Champions will face the Eastern Warriors in their final match. The Warriors are still searching for their first victory during this year’s tournament. In their final clash, the Superstars will have to secure a victory over the Conquerors to stand a chance to bag the title.

The Champions were only able to accrue 162 runs in their clash against the Conquerors. Jake Carstens (5/44) picked up a five-wicket haul to keep his side’s hopes up. He received some excellent support from Romashen Pillay (3/34).

It was only Christiaan du Toit (49) and Dewan Marais (28) who managed to provide some resistance with the bat in hand.

The left-arm orthodox spin bowler Divan Engelbrecht (5/32) then produced a match-winning performance with his five-wicket haul to keep them in the match and the title race. Engelbrecht removed Pillay (39) and Carstens (0) in successive deliveries in the 27th over.

Fast bowler Tristan Luus (3/26) showed some nerves of steel as he caught Jonathan van Zyl (50) from his own bowling to leave the Conquerors seven runs short of a victory.

The Superstars secured a bonus point victory over the Western Legends in the penultimate round. They reached 286 runs in their innings thanks to half-centuries by Maahir Jospeh (56) and Abdullah Bayoumy (50).

The Legends’ Tumelo Makume (4/26), Dakalo Leketa (3/29), and Rico Fryer (3/47) produced some good bowling.

The Legends were however placed under pressure early when the south African Schools’ captain, Juan James (2/18), picked up two wickets in the first over of their innings. The SA u19 fast bowler Liyema Waqu (3/42) then caused even more damage.

The Central Gladiators defeated the Eastern Warriors by seven wickets. Their fast bowler Kwena Maphaka (5/43) was the shining star with his five-wicket haul.

Richard Seletswane (61*) and Thebe Gazide (52) also made valuable contributions towards the victory with their half-centuries.
