This year’s edition of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament in Cape Town will feature an astounding 96 teams and over 300 hockey matches.
The event, one of the biggest Easter hockey festivals in the country, features both boys’ and girls’ teams, and runs from Wednesday, 2 April, to Saturday, 5 April.
The tournament includes teams from South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, which ensures interesting contrasts in playing styles.
Eight venues will be used for the jam-packed programme, including the Hartleyvale A and B turfs, Western Province Cricket Club‘s two fields, Pinelands High School, Rustenburg Girls’ High, Wynberg Girls’ High, and Herschel Girls School.
“We are excited for this year’s tournament. It’s an exciting time to be hosting the event again,” tournament director Robert Goslett told SuperSport Schools Plus.
“This year is unique and different,” he explained. “We have a different pool structure, which makes the competition exciting.”
The organisers have moved away from the traditional five-teams-in-a-pool formula and have instead opted for a quicker group stage and knockout rounds.
For 2025, there are 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ pools, with only three teams in each pool, and two group matches on the opening day.
After day one, the teams will move into the Cup, Plate, Shield, Super Bowl, Bowl, and Silver sections, depending on their results.
This year, though, Somerset College will be in Johannesburg to contest the St Mary’s Hockey Festival.
The absence of both defending champions adds intrigue to the event with the knowledge that new winners will be crowned.
Some of the front runners in the boys’ section include Worcester Gimnasium, Stellenberg High School, Fairmont High School, and Namibia’s Windhoek Gimnasium.
Some of the Western Cape’s hockey powerhouses have entered invitational sides, including Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), South African College High School (SACS), Rondebosch Boys’ High, Somerset College and Paarl Boys’ High.
Newcomers, Hoërskool Upington, will also hope to make their presence felt.
The girls’ section is wide open and unpredictable. Middelburg caused shockwaves last year, but they’ll also be missing the tournament, which further opens the door for different teams to take a crack at gold.
Among the quality sides in action are Stellenberg High, La Rochelle Girls’ High School, Wynberg Girls’ High, HoërskoolDurbanville, and Fairmont High, who impressed at the York High Festival over the past weekend.
Woodridge College, Stirling High School, Kingswood College, and Hudson Park will represent Eastern Cape interests at the event.
The international teams will also bring a different dimension to the festival. Do they have the firepower to go all the way and claim top honours?

Thirty-two of the country’s top hockey-playing schools will converge at St Mary’s Waverley, Johannesburg, for the prestigious annual Standard Bank St Mary’s Waverley Hockey Festival, which runs from 3-6 April.
The hockey showcase has come a long way since its modest beginnings. Only 12 teams participated in the inaugural event in 2000. It has since grown exponentially over the years to become, arguably, the most prestigious girls’ hockey event on the South African sporting calendar.
Fifty-one festival participants have gone on to represent South Africa, and another two have donned the colours of Namibia, on the international stage.
The defending champions, Durban Girls’ College (DGC), will kick the festival off with a tie against Penryn on Thursday morning. Coach Chardinay Penniston‘s charges are aware that they carry a target on their back as the title holders. They are, however, not focusing on their previous success. It’s a new team and a new season, and they’re eager to write their own history at the event.
DGC is in Pool A and will face Die Hoërskool Menlopark, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Pearson High School, The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC), Somerset College, the St Mary’s Waverley Festival XI, and Penryn in the group stage.
The 2023 champion, Eunice High School, is bristling with excitement ahead of the festival. Coach Nika Coertzen‘s charges also begin their campaign on Thursday morning when they take on Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.
It will be the third match in Pool B, which also features, Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof, Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria (Affies),St Andrew’s School for Girls, Hoërskool Garsfontein,St John’s DSG, Roedean School, and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High.
The hosts, St Mary’s Waverley are on the hunt for their first title since 2011. They have lifted the trophy five times but there have been slim pickings in recent years. They’ll get Pool C’s action underway with a tricky test against Cape Town’s St Cyprian’s School, which has made a strong start to the season.
Standing in St Mary’s Waverley’s way in Group C are St Stithians College for Girls, St Mary’s DSG (Kloof), Rhenish Girls’ High, St Cyprian’s, Clarendon High School for Girls, Windhoek High, and Pretoria High School for Girls.
The seven-time winners, Oranje Meisieskool, are on the hunt for another trophy to adorn their resplendent trophy cabinet. However, they last lifted the title in 2022, so, given their record of success, it’s been a while since they came out on top. Coach Gys van Schalkwyk‘s charges face Durban’s Our Lady of Fatima in their opener.
Their opposition in Pool D includes Paarl Gimnasium, St Anne’s Diocesan College, Herschel Girls School, Paarl Girls’ High School, Collegiate Girls’ High School, Our Lady of Fatima, and Kingsmead College.

The mighty Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs, went down 1-2 to Remember Elite Sport Academy(RESA) in a shock result in the Gauteng Development League (GDL) on the weekend.
Playing away from home, coach David Mathebula‘s side was under the pump from the first whistle, with RESA making full use of their home-ground advantage.
Despite yellow cards to Kabelo Mofokeng, Samukelo Mthombeni, and Mandla Vilakati in the opening half, the hosts also found a way through the Amakhosi’s defence, striking twice before the break.
Onthatile Lemao netted in the second minute to set the visitors on the back foot before Banele Radebe knocked in a stunner in the 36th minute to give the hosts a two-goal cushion at halftime.
Chiefs fought until the end and were able to pull a goal back, but RESA came away with the win and the points after a committed performance.
In another big upset, the highly respected School of Excellence fell 0-3 to Joburg City. Last season was not one to remember for Joburg City, but it appears that they might have found their groove in 2025.
TS Galaxy put up a good fight but lost 0-1 to the defending champions, Highlands Park. Randburg AFC, after a win over Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, couldn’t pull off another upset and went down 1-2 to Mamelodi Sundowns.
In the big Pretoria derby, SuperSport United scored a resounding 3-0 win over Tuks, and Kathorus Hyper Academy lost 0-3 to Panorama.
RESULTS

Juan Martin netted for Jeppe in their 1-1 draw with Hilton College on day three of the Nomads Hockey Festival. Photo: Christo van Deventer
Grey College, Pretoria Boys High (PBHS), Wynberg Boys’ High, and Maritzburg College enjoyed comprehensive victories on Monday, the third and last day of the Nomads Hockey Festival, in Johannesburg.
Jeppe High School for Boys kept their unbeaten record intact, but so, too, did Hilton College, who held the hosts to a thrilling 1-1 draw.
Hilton, like Jeppe, opened their account with successive victories on the opening day before being held to a 2-2 draw by Pretoria Boys High on Sunday. They followed that with a superb 4-2 win over King Edward VII (KES) after trailing 0-2.
Monday’s showdown was a tightly contested affair it went down to the wire. Juan Martin gave Jeppe the lead from a penalty corner in the first chukka, and they led 1-0 at the break. Coach Siya Sityana’s boys created further opportunities to extend their lead but they failed to finish.
Hilton made inroads as the game progressed and fought their way back into the clash. In the final chukka, they received four short in quick succession but were unable to convert them. However, when they were awarded a penalty stroke after a superb run by Reagan Mudau, their captain Xavier Enslintook on the responsibility and sent the keeper the wrong way to level the scores.
Both teams had chances to seal the win later on, but it wasn’t to be.
While the last match of the day ended in a 1-1 draw, the first match on Monday was Wynberg Boys High against KES and it featured six goals.
Coach Ben Wiley‘s Wynberg troops had a challenging time at Nomads, but they ended their campaign with a confidence-boosting 4-2 win over the Red Sticks.
Ethan Daniels slotted a pair before Mustafa Kajee and Ethan Smith joined him on the scoring sheet.
Pretoria Boys High also bowed out in style at the festival after a win and a draw on day two. They claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Selborne College on Monday, with Ben Crew-Brown scoring the game-winner. His goal prevented Selborne, the winners of all five of their games at Nomads in 2024, from winning one in 2025.
Maritzburg College finished on a high note, beating St John’s College 1-0.
RESULTS
Wynberg Boys’ High 4-2 King Edward VII
Grey College 2-0 St Benedict’s College
Pretoria Boys High 1-0 Selborne College
Maritzburg College 1-0 St John’s College
Jeppe 1-1 Hilton College
A first visit to the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament will be an exciting learning experience for Pretoria’s Hoërskool Zwartkop. Photo: Hoërskool Zwartkop on Facebook.
Zwartkop Hoërskool is thrilled to be among the 96 teams that will be heading to the southern suburbs of Cape Town for the 2025 Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament.
Coach Connor Flowers‘ side will be making their debut at the tournament, which runs from 1-5 April.
Zwartkop’s Director of Hockey, Marthinus Gouws was excited about the school earning an invitation to the event: “This will be our first Belgotex,” he said. “We attended the Cape Town International Hockey Tournament in July 2024, and I believe our good showing at that event got us an invite to the 2025 Belgotex Easter Hockey Tournament.”
The Pretoria side has shown tremendous improvement in their game and has run up some big scores already this season.
They opened it with a big 13-0 triumph over Hoërskool Klerksdorp. In the past week, they outplayed Hoërskool Hugenote 7-0 in the pool stages of the NWU Prestige Sport Series and followed up with a 10-0 romp against Hoërskool Wagpos.
The competition in the Western Cape will, undoubtedly, be tougher, and Gouws said Zwarries will not set targets for themselves.
“Obviously, we would like to end up as high as possible at the end, but coach Connor and I believe in a game-for-game and quarter-by-quarter mindset. If we accomplish this, the rest will take care of itself,” he explained.
Zwartkop has built up a solid squad, including captain Handré Coetzee and vice-captain Roché Oberholzer, who have both been in the first team for three years and are closing in on 75 matches for the side. Douw Nel and Jordan Cooks, both in grade 11, are in their second year in the 1st XI.
Gouws said the quartet offers different qualities to the first side: “All four bring different personalities and playing styles to the team that complement each other, with a balance of natural defending and all-out flare.”
Zwarries have been drawn in Pool 10 where they will face Hermanus and Curro Durbanville. They open their challenge on Wednesday, 2 April, against Hermanus.
Gouws said he would have liked better preparation before the big event. He explained: “We are not where we should be as two of our games before this, our Klerksdorp and Wagpos games, were stopped at halftime as we were already up past 10 goals.
“The other game, against Hugenote, we won 7-0 with no real competition from them. I don’t want to sound or seem high, but they did not give us any realistic test in the game. It’s nothing against them or their schools, our hockey programme is just farther along than theirs.
“So, I am worried we might be entering this a bit under-cooked, but I feel we might just see real character come out in such times,” he concluded.
Puntemakers:
Menlopark 43 (19) – Drieë: Leskin Samuels (2), Juan Joubert (2), Declan Pelser, Ruan Strydom, Bladen Petersen. Doelskoppe: Andru Keun (4). HTS Drostdy 29 (19) – Drieë: Jacques de Klerk (2), Adrian Vergotine, Anwill Prins, Eugene Walker. Doelskoppe: Jano van Deventer (2).
