    Beknopte telkaarte:

Dr. Malan 282/8 (Luka Pretorius 122, Jacques Nel 52, Qihan Swanepoel 24, Heinrich Jansen van Rensburg 23; Dave Pelzer 3/32, Jaco Botha 2/46); Heidelberg Volkskool 99 (Dandre Louw 53; Heinrich Jansen van Rensburg 6/25). Dr. Malan wen met 183 lopies.

Ben Vorster 201 (Njabulo Maseko 81, Wilhelm Brummer 42, Ekstras 38; Henco Britz 2/28); HTS Middelburg 203/8 (Armand Kotze 79*, Jaden Knoessen 45, Altus van Heerden 30*, Ekstras 24; Njabulo Maseko 2/34, Kulani Mnisi 2/37). HTS Middelburg wen met twee paaltjies.

The basketball season is in full swing, with schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape completing their third weekend of action. Many teams were kept busy at the American International School of Johannesburg‘s annual tournament, but some traditional derbies were played.

King Edward VII School (KES), one of Gauteng’s top basketball-playing schools, generated considerable excitement and enthusiasm as they hosted their first home games of 2025,  with the first team taking on St Peter’s College.

Unfortunately, lightning brought a premature end to the contest with KES 10 points to the good, leading 24-14.

In KwaZulu-Natal, Northwood School, one of the country’s elite teams in recent seasons – The Knights were remarkably dominant in powering their way to the St John’s Basketball Tournament title in 2024 –  recorded a commanding 76-53 win over Kearsney College at the SportZone in Botha’s Hill.

The visitors’ victory was built upon a one-sided first quarter in which they forced numerous turnovers to charge into a 20-5 lead.

Kearsney found their footing in the second quarter, but Northwood edged it 21-18 to take a 41-23 lead into the break.

There was no coming back from that 18-point deficit, but Kearsney tested the Knights, scoring only five points fewer than Northwood in the second half.

Simamukele Vacu dominated for the visitors, dropping 33 points on Kearsney, while Awande Chiliza added 16. Lwandile Njapha led Kearsney’s scorers, with 10 points, while Markus Wise and James Hastings-Brown had nine each.

St Charles College, another traditional basketball power, hosted Glenwood High School in the always-bouncing Samke Khumalo Arena and powered their way into triple figures, handing the Green Machine a tough 113-44 defeat.

The visitors swished the first three-pointer of the game through the basket, but they had trouble dealing with Saints‘ full-court press, which worked a treat for the home side, who created numerous turnovers and turned those into easy buckets.

Maritzburg College, fresh off scoring 118 points in a win over Glenwood last weekend, came close to another century of points.

Spurred on by their raucous supporters in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall, they blasted Michaelhouse 97-53. The Red, Black, and White took charge from the outset and were 44-29 clear at halftime.

College captain Nkhanyiso Ngcobo led from the front and was the leading scorer with 23 points.

Meanwhile, Hilton College enjoyed their home-court advantage and ran out the winners by 31 points over Clifton College.

In the Eastern Cape, Queen’s College and Grey High engaged in a fiercely contested clash. There was little to separate the sides, but Queen’s, eventually, pulled off a four-point win, triumphing 41-37.

    RESULTS

    Northwood 77-53 Kearsney College
    Hilton College 64-33 Clifton College
    Queen’s College 41-37 Grey High
    St Charles 113-44 Glenwood High
    Maritzburg College 97-53 Michaelhouse
King Edward VII 24-14 St Peter’s College

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Dinamika 189 (Jadin Schlebusch 43, Trent Shrives 31*, Kyle du Plooy 30, Ekstras 23; Zian Maritz 3/27, Ibrahim Haffejee 3/32, Byron Viljoen 2/32); Monument 107/2 (Logan Weetman 38*, Quinton Nel 28, Antonie van Niekerk 26; Jayden Smith 1/24). Monument wen met agt paaltjies, volgens die Duckworth-Lewis-Stern-metode.

Zwartkop 135 (WJ Esterhuizen 29, Dawid Hanekom 24, Vince Matraiotte 23, Ekstras 22; Dian de Villiers 5/17, Barto Oosthuizen 2/10); Midstream College 109 (Ryan Strauss 35, Dian de Villiers 25; Layton Wilson 5/21, Liam van Wyk 2/19). Zwartkop wen met 26 lopies.

Hoërskool Pietersburg 181 (AJ Galloway 80, Stephan Swanepoel 29; Jurgen Hesse 4/28, Douw Jacobs 2/27, Elje Kleynhans 2/53); Hoërskool Lichtenbrug 3/0. Wedstryd afgelas weens slegte weer.

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) clinched the ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament on Sunday in Bloemfontein with a battling 14-11 victory over Jeppe High School for Boys.

Affies, beaten in the final in the previous two years by Selborne College, was desperate to go all the way on this occasion and make it third time lucky.

They made a good start, scoring the first goal of the contest, but Jeppe quickly responded. By the end of the first chukka, it was 2-2.

Coach Lucky Letshabo‘s Jeppe side, then, hit the front, striking twice to open up a 4-2 advantage. It didn’t last long as Affies fought their way back and levelled.

At 5-5, Jeppe had an opportunity to hit the front, but they were denied by the Affies’ netminder.

Then, for the first time since the first chukka, Affies snatched the lead. Goals, suddenly, began to rain down. At the end of the third chukka, the Pretoria school had one hand on the trophy, leading 11-8.

With typical grit, Jeppe kept fighting until the end. They shared the honours in the last chukka, with both teams netting three times, but that left Affies the champions by a 14-11 margin.

In a high-scoring battle for third place, Northwood outlasted Reddam House Constantia 17-13, while Grey High School ended fifth after a second win over Maritzburg College, beating the KZN side 10-6. They had beaten them 14-6 earlier in the tournament.

Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) doubled up Stirling High’s score, recording a 10-5 win to place seventh. Glenwood House took ninth place after a hard-fought 11-9 victory over the hosts, Grey College, and Paarl Boys’ High enjoyed a 23-3 romp in their last outing against the Grey College 2nd team.

When one talks of dynasties in South African schools’ sports, Westville Boys’ High‘s swimming team is in the conversation for being the greatest of them all in a specific sport. Yet again, over the weekend, they proved themselves to be the best.

Only once in the last decade has Westville been defeated. That was by St Benedict’s College, and they beat Bennies when the schools went up against one another later that season. The Griffin‘s strength in depth has remained almost untouchable.

On Friday afternoon, both Westville and St Benedict’s were in action at the Affies Invitational Gala in Pretoria.

There, Westville was joined by fellow KZN schools, Durban High School (DHS), Maritzburg College, and Glenwood. The Gauteng contingent also featured Affies and Pretoria Boys High, while Grey College flew the flag for the Free State.

It was no surprise that Westville claimed victory, and they did it comfortably, scoring 419 points, with St Benedict’s, in second, on 366, followed by DHS on 296.

Further down the standings, in a great battle for fifth spot, Pretoria Boys High edged out their great rivals, Affies, by just two points.

Westville first contested the Affies Invitational in 2018. Since then, they’ve made the trip up to Pretoria only every second year to coincide with the hosting of the Alan Burt Gala in Johannesburg. In their four appearances at the Affies Invitational Gala, Westville’s record is a perfect four wins.

    5 Pretoria Boys High 255
    6 Affies 253
    7 Maritzburg College 210
    8 Glenwood 89

On Saturday, the action moved to St Stithians College for the Alan Burt Gala, with Westville, DHS, Pretoria Boys High, Maritzburg College, and Glenwood again in action. They were joined by Saints, Parktown, King Edward VII (KES), and St David’s Marist Inanda.

It was a different line-up but the same winner, with Westville powering their way to another emphatic victory. They finished 114 points clear of second-placed DHS, while St David’s placed third, only six points clear of Pretoria Boys High.

Further down the standings, St Stithians and Maritzburg College finished tied for sixth place, on 322 points.

It was a remarkable 17th win in succession in the Alan Burt Gala for Westville.

The Nkowankowa Hub, from just outside of Tzaneen, in Limpopo, created special memories on Sunday when they were crowned the Schools SA20 regional champions in Benoni.

The girls from up north twice defeated a strong Kwa-Themba Hub team and also beat the Shoshanguve Hub side on their way to lifting the winner’s trophy.

Nkowankowa won their first match against Kwa-Themba, from Ekurhuleni,  by five wickets, but it showed that if they met again in the final, it would likely be a cracker.

In the title game, Kwa-Themba received outstanding performances from Mpumelelo Mashilwane (34) and Nonkululeko Mahlangu (4/7), but Nkowankowa maintained their composure to claim victory.

Unfortunately for Kwa-Themba, Mashilwane’s fine innings represented 72 percent of their runs, and they mustered only 47 all out. Mahlangu tried her best to defend that small total, but Nkowankowa kept a cool head to chase it down.

The champions also blew Shoshanguve out of the water, winning by 33 runs. Pontsho Refilwe Mopayi, one of Nkowankowa’s standouts, wreaked havoc with a spell she will likely never forget. In just 1.4 overs, she snapped up five wickets – an average of one every second ball – while conceding only three runs.

Motlalepule Joan Sbele (2/9) and Respect Mabasa (2/11) also got in on the action as the side from Limpopo bundled out Shoshanguve for only 29 runs to book another face-off with the Kwa-Themba Hub in the final.

Inclement weather led to the title decider being played over 15 overs a side and Mapoyi was again in the thick of the action, capturing 2/12. Alicia Mukhandi Masela, with 2/14, provided good support as Kwa-Themba was limited to 60/7.

Try as they might, they couldn’t halt the Nkowankowa Hub’s bid for victory and Ripfumelo Faith Nkuna for her side in the 14th over.

    Summarised scorecards

    Final

Kwa-Themba Hub 60/7 (Mpumelelo Mashilwane 23; Pontsho Refilwe Mopayi 2/12, Alicia Mukhandi Masela 2/14); Nkowankowa Hub 61/5 (Ripfumelo Faith Nkuna 20; Nonkululeko Mahlangu 2/3, Seipati Moagi 2/11). Nkowankowa Hub won by five wickets.

    Round-Robin

Kwa-Themba Hub 47 (Mpumelelo Mashilwane 34; Respect Mabasa 2/15); Nkowankowa Hub 49/6 (Extras 15, Respect Mabasa 10; Nonkululeko Mahlangu 4/7). Nkowankowa Hub won by four wickets.

Nkowankowa Hub 62/8 (Extras 16, Respect Mabasa 12; Tintswalo Matjeke 2/6, Nokubong Mpanza 2/8) Shoshanguve Hub 29 (Lesedi Ndlovu 9; Pontsho Refilwe Mopayi 5/3, Motlalepule Joan Sebele 2/9, Respect Mabasa 2/11). Nkowankowa Hub won by 33 runs.

Hoërskool Waterkloof‘s wicketkeeper/batsman, Rico van der Walt ensured the Pretoria school shared the spoils against Grey College in Bloemfontein over the weekend.

On Friday afternoon, in the first of two matches between the schools, Grey College landed the first punch by winning the T20 clash.

The foundation for their win was laid by the home side’s batsmen, with all-rounder Daniel Hattingh and the opener, Christian Kind, starring.

Chasing 138 on what looked to be a challenging surface, the pair fought fire with fire and took the attack to the Klofie bowlers.

Hattingh led the way, smashing seven boundaries, three of which made ground for the first time on the other side of the rope, in a match-winning innings of 52 from just 40 balls.

Kind was also aggressive and asserted his dominance with six boundaries in his 37 from only 26 deliveries. The pair’s 50-run partnership broke the backbone of the chase and fuelled Grey’s charge to a four-wicket victory in the 18th over.

Van der Walt missed out in the T20, but he turned the tide for Waterkloof on Sunday. Fresh off of scoring a century against St Andrew’s School on Saturday, this time, with Waterkloof and Grey College playing a 40-overs-a-side game, he grabbed his opportunity with both hands and delivered another outstanding innings.

The visitors were set a target of 223 for victory after a well-rounded effort from Grey’s batsmen took the hosts to 222/6. Juan Maree sparkled lower down the order, top-scoring with 41 runs, but Van der Walt’s aggressive batting for Waterkloof stole the show.

Coming in with his side unsteady at 9/2, he teed off. He struck 12 fours and an astonishing eight sixes and played some delightful strokes to race to an unbeaten 128 from only 98 balls.

Juan Swart, who is only in Grade 9, showed against tough opposition why he is regarded as one of the best up-and-coming batting talents at schoolboy level in South Africa.

He provided Van der Walt with excellent support and made an unbeaten 42 in their 99-run partnership, which saw Waterkloof to a comfortable victory in the 34th over, with six wickets to spare.

    Summarised scorecards

    Friday – 31 January (T20)

Waterkloof 137/7 (Franco Schmidt 31, Jaydon Blom 21, AJ de Villiers 20, Ricardo Crous 20*; Henru de Wet 3/15); Grey College 138/6 (Daniel Hattingh 52, Christian Kind 37, Extras 23; Darius Maritz 2/13, AJ de Villiers 2/20). Grey College won by four wickets.

    Sunday – 2 February (40 over match)

Grey College 222/6 (Juan Maree 41, Henru de Wet 37, Daniel Hattingh 37, Christian Kind 36, Jaco Prinsloo 30*; Wian du Plessis 2/25, AJ de Villiers 2/35); Waterkloof 223/4 (Rico van der Walt 128*, Juan Swart 42*, AJ de Villiers 26; Sicelo Matayi 1/31). Waterkloof won by six wickets.

Three South African players -, Kayla Reyneke, Jemma Botha, and Nthabiseng Nini – were selected in the Team of the Tournament after the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup concluded with India beating South Africa in the final at the Bayuemas Oval, in Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday.

The team has representatives from six nations: South Africa, India, England, Australia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The champion, India, leads the selections, with four, while South Africa is a close second with three. England has two and Australia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka one player each.

Reyneke, South Africa’s captain, was named the captain of the side, following her outstanding campaign. The 19-year-old led South Africa with great aplomb. She, also, bagged 11 wickets in five games and oversaw South Africa’s dominant unbeaten run to the final.

The South African team kicked off its campaign with a 22-run win over New Zealand, then romped to a 10-wicket win over Samoa, and overcame Nigeria by 41 runs (DLS method) in the group stages.

The ladies in green and gold beat Ireland by seven wickets in the Super Six stage before their match against the USA was abandoned due to inclement weather.

Jemma Botha enjoyed a wonderful tournament with the bat. Her most important contribution came when she struck a match-winning 37 off 24 balls in the semi-final against Australia to propel South Africa into the final for the first time. She was selected to open with India’s Gongadi Trisha, the ICC u19 Women’s World Cup Player of the Tournament.

Fast bowler Nthabiseng Nini spearheaded South Africa’s bowling attack and was dominant in the powerplay. She finished the tournament with six wickets and was picked as the 12th player.

At the last edition of the ICC Women’s u19 T20 World Cup, held two years ago in South Africa, the home team’s journey ended in the Super Six stage after they narrowly missed out on a semifinal spot on net run rate. Nonetheless, they had Karabo Meso named in the team of the tournament.

The Team of the Tournament was selected by a panel comprised of commentators Julia Price, HD Ackerman, and Raunak Kapoor, along with Snehal Pradhan, the ICC Manager of Women’s Cricket.

The Rhenish Girls’ High School’s first hockey side enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in 2024 and laid claim to the number-one status in schoolgirls’ hockey in South Africa, but a new season and new challenges await.

The Western Cape side played a smart and exciting brand of hockey, which saw them record outstanding results throughout 2024.

Under the guidance of head coach Chris Gerber, Rhenish was close to unstoppable. They were fearless in attack and rock-solid defensively.

In the 50 matches they played, the Stellenbosch school scored a whopping 37 victories, just two losses, and 11 draws.

Captained by Leah du Plessis, at the end of the season the team won the prestigious Fairtree Super 12 title after finishing second at the All Girls Festival in Potchefstroom.

It was, however, in their weekly derby matches where Rhenish hit their stride and racked up bucketloads of goals.

They dominated the Western Cape, picking up wins over, among others, Paarl Girls’ High, Parel Vallei, HMS Bloemhof, and Herschel Girls School. Their only loss was against Paarl Gimnasium.

While it was an outstanding and memorable year for his team, coach Gerber knows success in 2024 does not guarantee success in 2025. “It’s extremely important for us to hit the reset button and start afresh in 2025,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“The girls have taken on the challenge as they know it will be an even more difficult season in 2025. However, we are excited and ready for the challenges we’re going to face this season.”

One of the positives for Rhenish heading into the new season is that they bade farewell to only one player at the end of last season, Kaitlyn van Binsbergen.

That means Gerber will have the luxury of working with an experienced squad that understands what it takes to be the best. They can’t wait to get the ball rolling, he said.

“It’s fantastic to have the bulk of the team ready for this year,” he enthused.

“It’s massive to build on the platforms of last year. However, it’s not going to be easy. Everyone has improved and is looking to take that challenge to us.

“The girls are very eager to get going and build on the success of 2024.”

The number-one status in the country comes with its challenges, and every team is now gunning for Rhenish.

Building on the systems already in place will be crucial, but the coach believes working on team culture and getting everyone aligned will stand them in good stead.

“I think the main thing for us is to build on our culture and take the fight to every challenge that may come.

“We need to adapt and be comfortable when things aren’t going our way. Every school will have its own focus points and ideas.

“We are only focused on what we are doing and how we can improve. We need to be able to execute our plans and ideas as best as we can but ultimately play as a team and work towards our goals.”

Another key area coach Gerber wants his team to focus on for the forthcoming season is defence. Last season, Rehnish conceded only 17 goals while scoring 160, which was made up of 92 field goals, 60 penalty corners, and six penalty strokes.

“Defensively, we need to be up for everything,” he said. “I think teams are getting much better with their defensive systems.

“We need to see how we can break those down to create more opportunities and make sure we put them away, either by getting a PC or taking the field goal opportunity.

“We are not focused on just getting PCs. Taking opportunities when they present themselves is our main focus,” he concluded.

Rhenish’s fixtures for the 2025 season are yet to be confirmed.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Montana 195/7 (Luca Bairos 54, Adriaan Nel 45*, Juvhanne Conradie 44, Marco Rudolph 29; Ettiene Smith 2/27, Kyle Wratten 2/30); Hans Moore 199/7 (Aiden Shaw 51, Xavier Coetzee 49, Zander Swart 24, Kenan Shaw 22*; Maans de Raubix 2/30, Wouter Kotze 2/49). Hans Moore wen met drie paaltjies.

Marais Viljoen 185/7 (Tiaan Hall 54, Abdullah Tadwala 35, Jaden Gavender 34, Ethan van Rooyen 21; Thloni Tabatha 3/40); Potchefstroom Gimnasium 174 (Divan van Eldik 37, Ruhann Steenkamp 32, Jahndré Coetzee 29, Ekstras 25; Marco Hoffman 3/22, Tristan Thom 2/9, Abdullah Tadwalla 2/25). Marais Viljoen wen met 11 lopies.
