Roux shuffles Junior Boks for Georgian challenge

NewsGJuniorBoksTeamJunior Springboks coach Chean Roux made nine changes to his team to face Georgia in their second World Rugby U20 Championship pool match at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi on Sunday, as the side prepares for another physical encounter.

Roux has made seven personnel changes and two positional switches.

Manie Libbok moves from fullback to flyhalf, where he will partner with scrumhalf Embrose Papier, who replaces the injured Rewan Kruger, while Wandisile Simelane will start in the midfield alongside Damian Willemse.

Yaw Penxe retains his place on the right wing, with Gianni Lombard taking over at left wing.

Up front flanker Len Massyn has been included in the loose trio with captain Ernst van Rhyn and Juarno Augustus, who scored two tries against France in their opening match.

In the front row, Kwenzo Blose will start alongside hooker Johan Grobbelaar and fellow prop Carlű Sadie, while lock Reinhard Nothnagel will take over from Ruben van Heerden, who took a knock against France.

Prop Gerhard Steenekamp, flanker Zain Davids, centre Stedman Gans and flyhalf Curwin Bosch, who started against France, have been included on the bench.

“We looked at Georgia’s strengths and weaknesses and also at the rest of the tournament, with the players’ workload recently, and we assembled our team accordingly,” said Roux. “We believe these are the best combinations for this game.”

Roux expected a physical onslaught from the hosts, Georgia, who went down 37-26 against Argentina in their opening match, but he said his team was ready for the challenge.

“They are a physical side and they have a great scrum, so we have to match them up-front,” said Roux. “They have come a long way in the last few years so we need to be up for it tomorrow.”

The match will kick off at 16h00 SA time and will be broadcast live on SuperSport 1 (Channel 201).

The Junior Springboks will face Argentina in their final round-robin match on Thursday, 8 June. The semi-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, 13 June, and the Final for Sunday, 18 June.

Junior Springboks to face Georgia in the World Rugby U20 Championship:

15 Jeanluc Cilliers (Xerox Golden Lions), 14 Yaw Penxe (EP Kings), 13 Wandisile Simelane (Xerox Golden Lions), 12 Damian Willemse (DHL Western Province), 11 Gianni Lombard (Xerox Golden Lions), 10 Manie Libbok (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 9 Embrose Papier (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 8 Juarno Augustus (DHL Western Province), 7 Ernst van Rhyn (captain – DHL Western Province), 6 Len Massyn (Xerox Golden Lions), 5 Reinhard Nothnagel (Xerox Golden Lions), 4 Salmaan Moerat (DHL Western Province), 3 Carlű Sadie (DHL Western Province), 2 Johan Grobbelaar (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 1 Kwenzo Blose (Toyota Free State). Replacements: 16 Gerhard Steenekamp (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 17 Daniel Jooste (DHL Western Province), 18 Wikus Groenewald (DHL Western Province), 19 Hendre Stassen (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 20 Zain Davids (DHL Western Province), 21 Francois de Villiers (Cell C Sharks), 22 Stedman Gans (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 23 Curwin Bosch (Cell C Sharks).

Kloof se Blou Tornado waai sterk teen Affies

Uys, Willams to join Junior Boks in Tbilisi

JuniorSpringboksMuller Uys (loose forward) and Jondre Williams (scrumhalf) will join the Junior Springboks in Tbilisi, Georgia, as injury replacements for the Nama Xaba and Rewan Kruger respectively.

Xaba (ankle) and Kruger (hamstring) were injured against France in the Junior Boks’ opening World Rugby U20 Championship clash on Wednesday, and will return to South Africa on Saturday.

Uys and Williams, who were both members of the Junior Springbok training squad in the lead-up to the tournament, will depart for Georgia on Saturday and are set to arrive in the country’s capital on Sunday.

“It is very unfortunate to lose players to injury so early in the competition but injuries are part of the game,” said Junior Springboks coach Chean Roux.

“I feel for the players because they have been working very hard to toward this goal for several months, and now they have to return home after the first match.

“That said, we are gaining two quality players in their places. Muller and Jondre have trained with us since the first training camp in Stellenbosch early in March, so they are familiar with our structures and systems, and their team-mates, which will make it very easy to slot in.”

The SA U20s returned to the training field on Friday to prepare for Sunday’s clash against Georgia at the Avchala Stadium following a recovery day on Thursday, and the determination in the squad to deliver a strong showing on Sunday was clear.

“We know what we are capable of as a team and we are looking forward to taking to the field against Georgia,” said Roux.

“We are obviously expecting a tough challenge against a physical team playing in front of a passionate home crowd, but we know what we need to do as a team, and we will give everything to achieve that.”

Roux will announce his match 23 to face Georgia on Saturday. The match will kick off at 16h00 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport 1 (Channel 201).

The Junior Springboks will face Argentina in their final pool match on Thursday, 8 June. The semi-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, 13 June, and the Final for Sunday, 18 June.

    Voorskou – 2017 – Affies vs Waterkloof

Klofies het teen dieseldfe spanne so bietjie meer as Affies gesukkel.

  • Stick takes the positives from SA U20 draw against France

Stick takes the positives from SA U20 draw against France

JuniorSpringboksJunior Springbok backline coach Mzwandile Stick focused on the positives from the team’s 23-23 draw against France in their opening World Rugby U20 Championship match in Tbilisi, Georgia, and said good player management was vital ahead of their second clash against the hosts on Sunday.

The coaching team reviewed the match against France on Thursday morning, while the players had a morning gym session followed by early afternoon massages to boost their recovery.

“The clash against France was tough game for both teams,” said Stick.

“The French played very well, and their forwards and halfbacks in particular, adapted well to the wet conditions. We also adjusted according to the weather conditions, and I have to compliment Curwin Bosch and Manie Libbok for getting us in the right places in terms of territory.

“If one looks at the statistics, we had 56% of the territory, but we didn’t convert it into points, which is something we need to improve on going into the next game.

“The other positives were our set pieces, and especially the way the scrummaged against France. Anything can happen in wet conditions, so it was great to see how physical our forwards were, while we also looked good at the breakdowns.

“One of the things we need to work on going forward is to try to get the ball to the wider channels. We tried to do it a few times against France, but we lost the ball. So we will certainly look to tighten the screws in the next few days.”

There were a few niggling injuries in the team following the physical encounter, but Stick said they would only have clarity on the status of the injuries later on Thursday.

“Nama Xaba was limping during the game and Rewan Kruger suffered a hamstring injury, while a few other players are also nursing bumps and bruises. But we will have to wait for our medical team to provide clarity on the seriousness of the injuries,” said Stick.

With only three days to prepare for their second clash against Georgia, who went down 37-26 against Argentina in their first match, Stick said good player management would be vital to ensure that the team is fresh for the next match. “We made sure that we did all the hard work back home because we knew that there would be a quick turnaround between matches,” said Stick.

“But that said, good recovery will be essential. Every game we play now will be like a final. Georgia played well against Argentina, and the home crowd here is very passionate, so we have to step up our performance against them.”

  • Roux praises Junior Bok character to secure draw

Roux praises Junior Bok character to secure draw

JuniorSpringboksJunior Springboks coach Chean Roux praised his team’s tremendous character to secure a 23-23 draw against France with a converted try in the dying seconds of their opening World Rugby U20 Championship match at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia on Wednesday.

A try in the final minute by Junior Springbok No 8 Juarno Augustus and a successful conversion by flyhalf Curwin Bosch saw the teams finish the clash tied at 23-23.

“It was nerve-wrecking, but I had confidence that we could score in the end,” said Roux.

“I knew that if we get ball possession late in the second half we would convert it into points, just as we did in the first half, because we had very little possession in the second half.

“The players showed tremendous character and that is fantastic in a World Championship.”

Roux singled out the team’s conditioning as one of the main positives in the match and said they would address the areas of their game that needed to improve in the next few days.

“The positives were that similarly to some of the warm-up games, we ended on a high note, so I think our superior conditioning pulled us through in the end,” said Roux.

“There will always be negatives if one doesn’t win a match. But I will have a look at the video to see what the negatives are and we will work on that.”

Augustus opened up the scoring in the second minute with a pick-and-go and the successful conversion and a subsequent penalty goal by Bosch pushed the team 10-0 up on the scoreboard. French fullback Romain Buros closed the gap to five points with a charge-down try in the eighth minute.

Roux’s team was dealt a double blow soon after as winger Wandisile Simelane was sin-binned for tripping, and nine minutes later prop Gerhard Steenekamp also received a yellow card for infringing at a breakdown, which forced the team to play with 13 men. The opposition capitalised on this as hooker Florian Dufour crossed the chalk in the 28th minute to push his team into a 12-10 lead.

The SA U20’s, however, sustained the pressure applied by France well for the rest of the half and managed to maintain the two-point deficit going into the break.

France struck first in the second half with a try by Baptiste Couilloud, while flyhalf Romain Ntamack slotted over back-to-back drop goals, while Bosch slotted over two penalty goals for South Africa to trail 23-16 early in the fourth quarter.

The Junior Boks continued to fight until the final minute as they retained possession and applied pressure. A yellow card for France at the death, however, saw them opt for a lineout and this patience paid off with a try for Augustus, which Bosch converted for the draw.

    Scorers:

South Africa 23 (10) – Tries: Juarno Augustus (2). Conversions: Curwin Bosch (2). Penalties: Bosch (3). France 23 (12) – Tries: Romain Buros, Florian Dufour, Baptiste Couilloud. Conversion: Romain Ntamack. Drop Goals: Romain Ntamack (2).
