  • Helpies sal titel teen Lichtenburg in Virseker Beeldtrofee verdedig

  • Jansies bespreek plek in Beeldtrofee-eindstryd

  • SA Schools team secures whitewash in U19 Series

SA Schools coach Lance Sendin on Saturday lauded his team’s character as a last-gasp try secured them a 13-12 victory against England in the final round of the U19 International Series at Paarl Boys’ High to secure a whitewash in the tournament.

In a strange twist to the final day’s play, a missed conversion by the SA Schools A team, meanwhile, saw them go down 17-18 against Wales. In the opening match of the day, Italy defeated France 30-21.

“The guys hung in there against England and showed guts and good character,” said Sendin. “The players became men today because this was a hard-fought Test match. The victory was also just reward for all their hard work, and I am very proud that they finished the tournament unbeaten.”

Erasmus, meanwhile, admitted that his team was not at their best against Wales and said: “I am very disappointed, we didn’t play as well as we wanted to. But looking back at the tournament as a whole, it was a fantastic opportunity for the players to measure themselves against international competition.”

The SA Schools team struck first in their clash against England with fullback Gianni Lombard slotting over a penalty goal in the 17th minute, after missing an earlier attempt. This lead, however, was short-lived as England scored a try from a pick-and-go compliments of No 8 Tom Willis.

Both teams were dealt a blow soon after as they were reduced to 14 men, while England found themselves playing with 13 men for three minutes in the closing stages of the half as they received a second yellow card. The hosts, in particular, showed courage on attack as they ran hard at England, but mistakes at crucial times combined with the visitors’ tenacious defence left them trailing 5-3 at the break.

The second half was equally intense, but England used their powerful forwards well to force their way onto the front foot, and it paid off as Willis scored his second try to hand them a 12-3 lead. Lombard slotted over his second penalty goal in the 54th minute to reduce the deficit to 12-6, which put them within range of winning the match with a converted try.

And they did just that as captain Salmaan Moerat crashed over on the stroke of fulltime. The successful conversion by Lombard sealed the 13-12 win.

The first half between the SA Schools A team and Wales was tight as both sides tried hard to make their presence felt on attack and put their bodies on the line on defence. Each side lost a player to a yellow card during the first 15 minutes, but the SA Schools A team managed to score a try from a rolling maul compliments of flanker Francke Horn.

The home team, however, suffered a blow shortly before the break as flyhalf Tyrone Green was sin-binned, but their solid defence throughout the half limited Wales to only a penalty despite their determined efforts to cross the chalk.

Wales continued to threaten in the opening exchanges of the second half, which allowed scrumhalf Dane Blacker to dash to the tryline for an 8-7 lead while Green was still in the sin bin. SA Schools A fullback Austin Davids missed a penalty soon after, but Green pushed the side ahead with a stunning try after kicking the ball through and gathering to touch down. The remaining minutes were thrilling as Wales scored two tries, while Mark Snyman scored a vital try for the hosts in the last minute. The unsuccessful conversion, however, saw them go down 18-17.

    SA Schools 13 (3) England 12 (5)

SA Schools – Try: Salmaan Moerat. Conversion: Gianni Lombard. Penalty Goals: Gianni Lombard (2).

England – Tries: Tom Willis (2). Conversion: James Grayson.

Wales – Tries: Cameron Lewis, Corey Baldwin, Dane Blacker. Penalty Goal: Ben Jones.

  • SA Schools coaches opt for continuity for U19 Series finale

SA Schools coaches opt for continuity for U19 Series finale

NewsU19 International Series CaptainsSA Schools coach Lance Sendin and SA Schools A coach Sean Erasmus opted for continuity in selection for their final Under-19 International Series matches at Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday against England and Wales respectively as they look to finish the tournament on a winning note.

Sendin made only two changes to his team, with Paarl Boys prop Reece Bezuidenhout and HTS Middelburg flanker JC Pretorius earning starts in place of Nathan McBeth and Charl Serdyn respectively.

Erasmus, meanwhile, made an injury-enforced change to the SA Schools A team for their clash against Wales, with winger Ayabonga Oliphant coming in for fullback Abner van Reenen, who is nursing a quadriceps strain.

This resulted in two positional switches to the team, with Austin Davids moving from wing to fullback, and Tadendaishe Mujawo starting on the right wing to make place for Oliphant on the left wing.

Sendin said it was tough to select his team for their closing match against England as all the players in the squad had immense potential.

“It was really difficult to select this squad, but we opted for the player combinations we thought would be the best to execute the game plan we would like to play against England,” said Sendin. “With only two changes, we will have the luxury of continuity in selection, which will be good against the physical and determined English team.

They have suffered defeats in both their matches up to now, so we are expecting them to give their all to finish the tournament on a winning note. But we are equally determined to complete the tournament unbeaten, so it will be a good test for both teams.”

Erasmus, who is also the Paarl Boys’ High 1st XV coach, meanwhile, said the continuity in selection in the SA Schools A team was driven by the desire to reward the players who guided them to a 53-14 victory against England on Tuesday.

“We felt that it was important to reward the players for the good form they showed against England, and hopefully we will be able to build on that this week,” said Erasmus. “Our focus at training has been on getting our game plan to function smoothly and improving our accuracy. Wales are a good side and they very are clinical in their approach, so we will have to be at our best to beat them.”

France and Italy will kick off the day’s action at Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday when they meet at 11h15.

All three matches will be broadcast on channel 198, SuperSport’s pop-up channel.

  • Historical Overview – Boland Landbou vs. Oakdale Landbou

The second to last game of the season’s Premier Interschools Derby’s takes place on Saturday the 20th of August when Boland Landbou hosts fellow agricultural school Oakdale from Riversdale for their annual interschools.

The two schools have been playing each other on yearly basis since 1992 and this year they will meet for the 23rd time. The first few meetings were very close and home ground advantage played a huge role. It was only in 2001 that an away team won for the first time when Boland Landbou with a certain Derick Hougaard at pivot, took the honours 15-0 in Riversdale.

For the next eight years Boland dominated the Interschools and Oakdale only managed one win which was in 2005. The score on the day was 8-6 in a very hard fought game in Riversdale. The 2009 Interschools was abandoned due to flooded fields at Oakdale. Home ground advantage has been key in the past five years and this might may well continue in 2016.

At the moment Boland hold the overall upper hand by winning fourteen of the games while Oakdale have won eight, with one draw.

Magwala was also picked for the SA Schools A team.

Oakdale from Riversdale is having a stellar season having played fourteen matches and only losing three. The three defeats came against arguably the three strongest schoolboy teams in SA at the moment in Grey College, Paarl Boys High and Paarl Gymnasium.  Their best wins for the season were against highly rated Paul Roos and Outeniqua.

    HOër LANDBOUSKOOL BOLAND PROFILE

Boland Landbou is an Afrikaans agricultural high school that was established in 1962 in Paarl.  All the boys are hosted in hostels and there are no day learners. The Boland Agricultural Union already started campaigning for an agricultural high school in the Boland area in the early 50’s and in 1953 the then Administrator, Mr JO du Plessis in principle approved the establishment of such a school. The Department of Education formerly approved the request in 1956 and the agricultural union was tasked to find a suitable farm to host the school on. Factors that they had to consider were, distance to nearest Town, availability of power, postal distribution, water availability, size of the farm to be able to do diverse farming.

The farm “Langerug” in the Agter-Paarl area was eventually identified as the most suitable for this venture and in 1957 it was bought by the Provincial Administration for R150 000 from Mr F Hauptfleisch. By 1959 the final planning was done and building started in early 1960. The union opted for the name “Hoër Landbouskool Boland” and it was dually accepted by the Superintendent-General of Education Mr DJ Liebenberg. In 1961 the first Principle was appointed in Mr C. du Toit (Vonk) van der Merwe, who was still at Augsberg Agricultural at that stage.

On 22 January 1962 the school opened its doors for the first time and with a brand new staff Mr van der Merwe laid the foundations for the excellent institution this school has become.

Boland Landbou rugby produced their first Springbok in 1984 when prop Attie Strauss was picked for the tests between South Africa and the South American Jaguars.

They produced a further three Boks in Lock Hottie Louw (2002), Prop Deon Carstens (2002) and Flyhalf Derick Hougaard (2003). The latter becoming the darling of Loftus and the Blue Bulls with his match winning boot in the mould of their beloved Naas Botha.

Old boys Hottie Louw and Deon Carstens have returned to help their Alma Mater in matters of rugby and both have coaching roles at the school. It is indeed great to see that they are ploughing their experience back into the school and its learners.

    HOëR LANDBOUSKOOL OAKDALE PROFILE

Established in 1928, Oakdale Agricultural High School is well known countrywide for its high standard of agricultural training. Classes are small to ensure that every learner receives individual attention. A mere 80 boys are enrolled annually and applications always exceed this figure.

High marks in Natural Science and Maths, as well as an interest in fauna and flora, are requirements for acceptance, and learners come from all over the Cape, as well as the Free State and Gauteng. All teaching venues have computers and data projectors and there are also two fully equipped computer education help centres with eighty computers. In addition, the school has effective maths and reading help centres.

In the early 1920’s, the Department of Agriculture earmarked the farm “Oakdale” as a potential training farm for returning war veterans, but this never materialized. Instead it was approved in 1927 as ideal for the establishment of an agricultural school and 200 merino sheep, eight mules and four jersey cows were purchased. The school officially opened in 1928 with six boys, three from the old Transvaal and three from the Freestate. The only living space available was the old original farmhouse. In 1930 a new hostel was built that could house forty-two learners and the old farmhouse became the school building.

In 1941 the two Victorian side wings were demolished to build two much bigger wings, that is still in standing today. One was used as the hall and the other as classrooms. The latter is the Fanie du Toit Centre today.

The hostel was made bigger in 1942 and again in 1948 to be able to host the 108 learners of the time. In 1957 a second hostel for seniors was built and the school can now house around 300 boys.

Oakdale produce to date three Springbok rugby players in Flanker Pedrie Wannenburg, Centre/Flyhalf Meyer Bosman and Lock Johann Muller.

  • SA Schools teams show their class at Bishops

A Schools coach Lance Sendin and SA Schools A coach Sean Erasmus praised their teams for their strong performances on Tuesday in the second round of the U19 International Series at Bishops in Rondebosch, Cape Town, which earned them rewarding victories against France and England respectively.

The SA Schools team overcame a determined challenge by France for a 42-3 victory, while the SA Schools A team outscored England eight tries to two for an emphatic 53-14 victory. The victory for the SA Schools team followed on their 23-17 win against Wales last Friday.

In the opening match of the day Wales defeated Italy 41-15.

“I am very proud of the guys,” said Sendin. “We dominated up-front against a strong French pack and this created opportunities for the backs to attack. It was also pleasing to see how the backs used the ball, so we will take several positives from this game.”

Erasmus was equally pleased with his team’s performance and said: “Everyone did their bit on the field and it paid off with a quality performance. Our attack and defence was solid, which is really pleasing.”

The clash between the SA Schools team and France was bruising as both teams put their bodies on the line on attack and defence. France slotted over an early penalty, but the hosts soon found their rhythm on attack and took control of the match. This earned them back-to-back tries by winger Muller du Plessis and captain and lock Salmaan Moerat in the first 21 minutes.

France tried hard to hit back, but the defence shut them out. The SA Schools team, meanwhile, made good use of their chances, which allowed Moerat to add his second try shortly before the break as he crashed over the line following several phases to hand his team a 21-3 lead.

The home team picked up where they left off in the second half as Moerat drew the defence and passed out wide to wing Mike Mavovana, who touched down four minutes after play resumed. They were, however, dealt a blow in the 54th minute as Moerat was sin-binned for tackling a player without the ball. But this did not deter them as flyhalf Damian Willemse held off the defence to score their fifth try. The closing stages of the match were hard-fought, but Du Plessis broke through for his second try in the dying minutes to seal a 42-3 victory.

The SA Schools A team, meanwhile, were in fine form against England as they applied pressure on attack and defence from the outset. This approach paid off minutes into the match as centre Janco van Heyningen scored following a set move from a scrum, while fullback Abner van Reenen slotted over a penalty goal minutes later for a 10-0 lead.

England ran hard at the hosts, but their efforts to cross the tryline were denied by the tenacious defence. An intercept allowed winger Austin Davids to touch down for their second try, while hooker Schalk Erasmus added another from a rolling maul soon after as England were reduced to 14 men.

England hit back with a try on the stroke of halftime after stringing together phases and running hard on attack, which reduced the deficit to 22-7.

But the floodgates opened for the hosts after the break as they ran circles around England to score four tries within 20 minutes compliments of winger Tadendaishe Mujawo, Erasmus, lock Ryno Pieterse and Ayabonga Oliphant to stretch their lead to 46-7.

England responded with their second try, but this was cancelled out by the hosts’ eighth try out wide by Pieterse, which proved to be the last points of the match, and earned the SA Schools A team a 53-14 victory.

The final round of matches will be played at Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday.

School of Rugby Rankings – 15 August 2016

SOR NuusThere was noe movement in School of Rugby’s top ten in this week’s edition of the rankings. Second ranked, Grey College of Bloemfontein, recorded a comfortable 39-10 victory over Glenwood in Durban without their five national schools’ players.

Grey College also will play Louis Botha on Tuesday in a qualification match for the Kovsie competition’s Shimla-league. Paul Roos Gimnasium suffered a 22-32 defeate against Boland Landbou.

This victory strengthened Boland Landbou position in the eighth spot on the rankings.

It is important to take into consideration that School of Rugby’s ranking system only takes into account the performances each team produced thus far in the season and not the potential we might believe each team has.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously.

  • SA Schools teams named for Bishops battles

SA Schools coach Lance Sendin has made six changes to his side for the second round of matches in the U19 International Series at Bishops in Cape Town on Tuesday, while his SA Schools A counterpart Sean Erasmus made wholesale changes to his team, with only four players retaining their places in the starting line-up.

The SA Schools team will face France at 16h00 on Tuesday, while the SA Schools A team takes on England at 14h30. In the other clash Wales and Italy will go head-to-head at 13h00.

Sendin made six changes to the starting team that defeated Wales 23-17 at City Park Stadium on Friday, with the three changes in the backline seeing Manuel Rass getting a run at outside centre, Muller du Plessis starting on the left wing and Richman Gora running out at scrumhalf. They replace Wandisile Simelane, Sihle Njezula and Rewan Kruger respectively.

The changes to the forwards will see hooker Daniel Jooste replacing Pieter Botha in the front row, while Ben-Jason Dixon will join forces with captain Salmaan Moerat in the engine room in place of PJ Steenkamp, and No 8 Khwezi Mafu takes over from Khanya Ncusane.
“It was important to maintain some form of continuity in selection after building good momentum in the opening match against Wales, but at the same time we wanted to give some deserving players a chance to start,” said Sendin.
“France will test us as they showed against England last week, and they will be high on confidence after winning their opening game, so we have to be focused throughout the match. It is also vital that we use our point-scoring chances effectively.”
Erasmus, meanwhile, named a new-look team for their clash against England, with only four players –fullbackAbner van Reenen, wing Austin Davids, captain and centre Louritz van der Schyff and flank Athi Magwala – retainingtheir places in the run-on team. The SA Schools A side came up short against Italy on Friday, going down 23-20.
Two changes were injury enforced, as lock Jaco van Tonder and No 8 Jessie Johnson have been ruled out of action for two weeks after suffering suspected concussions on Friday. Paarl Boys High flank Francke Horn and Monument lock Ruan Vermaak have been called into the squad.
Horn has been named in the starting line-up, while Vermaak will warm the bench, while flyhalf Tyrone Green and scrumhalf Zinedine Booysen will form an exciting new halfback combination. Affies prop Cabous Eloff and hooker Schalk Erasmus will partner with KES tighthead prop Keagan Glade in a new front row.
Erasmus’ team also features a new lock pairing of Juan van der Mescht and Ryno Pieterse.
Commenting on the changes to his team Erasmus said: “We wanted to give all the players a chance to start in the first two matches, but we also have to select the team that is best suited to what we plan to do against the opposition, and we believe this team is the best to take on England,” said Erasmus.
“We have named a bigger pack to counter the threat posed by the England forwards, and to give us more stability in the set pieces. We also have to be switched on defensively as we are expecting England to run hard at us.”
The final round of matches will be hosted at Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday.

Die Virseker Beeldtrofee vir Makroskole sal vanjaar by Garsfontein, Monument, EG Jansen of Waterkloof staanplek kry.
