Menlopark secures a comfortable victory in Pretoria derby

Menlopark is riding a wave of brilliant performances this season. On Friday night, they added another win to their record with a comfortable victory at Affies Meisies. Photo: Supplied.

Die Hoërskool Menlopark made their Friday night trip to Affies Meisies worthwhile by recording a comfortable 3-0 victory over the hosts. In wintry weather, the visitors delivered a polished performance.

“I am very happy with the result, earned on a cold night in Pretoria,” Brad Brook, the Menlopark coach, told SuperSport Schools News.

“It is always difficult playing away in a Pretoria derby. I was pleased with the girls’ performance.”

The conditions might have been on the chilly side, but there was nothing cold about the sides’ performances. Affies Meisies were intent on making full use of their home ground advantage, while Brook’s charges had set their sights on claiming the bragging rights. They were rewarded for their early pressure with a brilliant team goal in the first chukka.

The visitors built up from the back before moving the ball into the midfield, where Monique Gerber and Chanette Jansen van Vuuren had taken control of matters for Menlo. From the midfield, the ball was sent wide to Anja Steidler, who carried it well before sending a sharp infield pass to Katelynn Blokpoel, just outside the 23.

Deftly, the forward beat a couple of defenders before slipping the ball just out of the Affies’ goalkeeper’s reach for a cracking opening goal.

Stung, the hosts tried to respond immediately, but they were met by resolute defence.

Janse van Vuuren later extended Menlopark’s lead with a moment of individual brilliance. After picking up the ball just inside the Affies half, she beat a couple of defenders on her way to the Affies D, before firing the ball into the back of the net.

“There was some really good work from the rest of the team to lead her out into space, and open it up for Chanette to have a go,” Brook recalled. “It was a really good bottom corner, far post, finish.”

Kathleen van Rooyen extended Menlopark’s lead to 3-0 in the final chukka with a reverse stick shot after the visitors’ tight press had led to a turnover of possession.

The hosts pressed and prodded at Menlopark’s defence throughout the contest, but had limited success. When they pierced the backline, they found themselves denied by Annika Kloppers, who is enjoying a wonderful season between the posts for Menlopark.

Stellies survive Oakdale, Strand holds off Tigers

After an intense contest in which both sides tested the other’s set-pieces, Stellenberg High defeated Oakdale Landbou 15-13 in Riversdal on Saturday.

The much-anticipated lineout battle narrowly tilted the Jade Brigade‘s way, and it brought 8th-man Yanos Molnar a try shortly before the end of the first stanza.

Midway through the second half, the Farmers’ no. 8, Jacobus de Villiers, showed why he was selected for the SA Schools’ side in his Grade 11 year. Like a runaway train, inside the Stellies’ 22, he powered through three would-be tacklers to score a try.

The game was mostly about the battle between two potent packs, but it was ultimately the boots of the flyhalves that decided the outcome.

After the teams changed sides at 12-10 to the visitors, Oakdale flyhalf Caleb Williams succeeded with one of two penalty kicks in the second half, while Stellies’ flyhalf Ethan van Biljon secured the visitors’ only three points after the break with an accurate penalty strike.

Both sides demonstrated why they have been giant slayers in recent years. Their goals will be to maintain that consistency in future seasons.

In a cracking contest which went down to the wire, Hoërskool Strand edged out Hoërskool Tygerberg 24-22, with the home crowd letting out a sigh of relief after the full-time whistle blew.

It was a grungy and physical battle, with the Strand forwards scoring three out of their four tries. Lock Robert de Villiers, openside flank Josh Lourens, and eighthman Rohan Bezuidenhout all muscled their way through an aggressive Tigers‘ defence.

Behind the pack, scrumhalf Jason Hartogh used his insightful vision to dart through a space between the opposition defenders for a try, and flyhalf Leathon Lewis converted twice off the kicking tee for four crucial points.

After a 31-31 draw with Hoërskool Robertson last week, Tygerberg will be frustrated by such a narrow defeat away from home. They’ll be aiming to earn their first victory in five games when they next take on Hoërskool Bellville.

Bere se verdediging genoeg om Klofie-aanslag te oorleef, Parkies veg terug om Helpies om te dop

    Foto: Frans Lombard/Actionpix.

Sy senterpaar was uitstaande.

Sy oopkantflank, Siya Ncube, was net so uitsonderlik.

Rondebosch edges out resilient SACS, Niemand bags hat-trick for Gimmies

Since losing by a point to Stellenberg High in their opening game, Paarl Gimnasium has appeared to be near unstoppable. Photo: Paarl Gim Premium.

Rondebosch Boys’ High mustered a narrow 19-17 victory over SACS on the Tinkie Heyns Field in Cape Town on Saturday.

The hard-fought contest felt like two boxers slugging it out in the ring. It was raw and ferocious, with both sides leaving everything on the field.

At halftime, it was only 5-3 in favour of the hosts. The outcome was uncertain, and it stayed that way until the final whistle blew.

SACS threatened throughout the match, with flyhalf Jake Dave getting the ball out wide quickly. He also bagged himself 12 points through a try, a penalty, and two conversions, making him the highest individual points scorer of the contest.

Ultimately, ‘Bosch inside centre Andrea Mynhardt‘s try in the first half was the razor’s edge that separated the teams.

The tight southern suburbs’ derby demonstrated the importance of maintaining consistency throughout the 70 minutes, where every mistake or lapse in concentration could be highlighted as the mistake which cost one side victory.

While SACS didn’t do much wrong, Rondebosch didn’t make that one mistake, which could so easily have cost them the game against the battle-hardened Newlands outfit, who fought tigerishly to the final whistle. Instead, they showed courage and persistence to grind out a win.

Paarl Gimnasium extended their winning streak to eight consecutive games with their 64-15 success over the visiting Boland Landbou in a Paarl derby on Saturday.

Openside flank Corné Niemand bagged himself three tries in a brilliant individual display and team performance from Gimmies, and Gim’s electrifying fullback, Thomas Saunders, opened the taps to scoot over for a couple of tries of his own.

The hosts were dominant in pretty much every aspect of the game, and their 49-point victory was a worthy follow-up to their 80-29 win over the Farmers last year.

Boland Landbou find themselves in a similar boat to Milnerton High and Hoërskool Durbanville this season. None of the three has been able to replicate their usual win records. Then, again, a closer look at their fixture lists reveals a challenging list of opponents.

The Farmers showed some fight, and hooker Adrian le Roux and openside flank Jacques Bester both scored tries from blindside runs after picking the ball up from rucks inside the opposition 22.

It was another good day for Gimmies, but another tough day for Boland Landbou, who will aim to get back to winning ways against SACS next Saturday.

  • Wynberg’s maul rolls against Bishops, Bellville beats Milnerton

Wynberg’s maul rolls against Bishops, Bellville beats Milnerton

Heavy hits and hard carries made for an entertaining southern suburbs derby between Bishops and Wynberg Boys’ High. Photo: Zaahid Appoles.

Just as they did against Rondebosch Boys’ High four weeks ago, Wynberg Boys’ High used the rolling maul to secure a southern suburbs’ derby victory, outscoring Bishops 38-20 on the Piley Rees on Saturday.

Down by only two points, at 10-12 at halftime, the hosts were in the game. However, hooker Ridhau Johnson scored a hat-trick off the back of rolling mauls, once again demonstrating how lethal Wynberg could be from the lineout, and the visitors went on to claim a comfortable victory.

Bishops showed some fighting spirit and replied with tries from outside centre Eljaron Geduld and substitute back Elihle Tsobo.

While the home side entertained with some silky hands among their backs, it was ultimately the Wynberg forward pack that stole the show and won the game through their cohesion.

Next Saturday, the challenge will be even tougher for Bishops, who take on an in-form Paarl Gimnasium.

After starting their season with five straight losses, Hoërskool Bellville earned their third victory in a row, winning 27-20 at Milnerton High.

Outside centre Caylem du Plessis showed good composure to finish two tries against a rushing Millies‘ defence. Flyhalf Marno Botes also had a good game. In addition to his playmaking responsibilities, his seven points off the kicking tee, from two conversions and one penalty, proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Millies’ flyhalf Chadlin Sellidon caught the eye, scoring 10 points, crossing for a try while also adding a conversion and a penalty.

Unfortunately, for the home team, his creative spark wasn’t enough to quell the Bellville effort, with the visitors ultimately doing enough to get the win.

Next weekend, Milnerton’s quest for a first win of the season – they mustered a 15-15 draw with Brackenfell among their seven defeats – continues next Saturday against Hoërskool Strand.

Hoërskool Swartland has failed to score 30 points or more only once in their seven wins this season. They scored more than double that, putting the biggest total of their 2026 campaign on the scoreboard on Saturday in a resounding 61-28 victory over Hoërskool Robertson in Malmesbury.

Robbies showed fight, running in four tries, all converted, but their defence had few answers to the home side’s offensive questions.

Hooker Winsor Solomon dotted down twice, while seven others also found their way over the try line. It was an all-round effort from the hosts, who played arguably their best game of the season in front of their home crowd.

Swartland faces a serious challenge next Saturday when they take on HTS Drostdy, another team whose attack has been lighting up opponents.

  • Foote, Norton proud of Junior Bok fightback as they capture maiden u20 TRC title

Foote, Norton proud of Junior Bok fightback as they capture maiden u20 TRC title

Junior Springbok coach Kevin Foote and skipper Riley Norton praised the SA u20 side for fighting back from three tries to one down to draw 29-29 with New Zealand in their final match of the 2026 Under-20 Rugby Championship at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqberha on Saturday.

South Africa fought back to hold a 22-15 lead at halftime in a thrilling encounter, which was staged in front of 18 100 people.

Speaking to the media after the match, Foote said: “We had moments where things didn’t go our way, but what stood out was the fight in the group and the resilience to keep coming back. That’s what you need in games like this, especially on occasions like these.”

Foote felt the Junior Boks showed clear development in their physicality and kicking game compared to previous encounters with New Zealand.

“Twelve months ago, we came here and didn’t kick particularly well. This time our kicking was mature, contestable, and it allowed us to play in the right areas of the field. There’s been real growth in our game.”

However, Foote admitted breakdown efficiency and ball security were areas where they could be better: “We probably turned over the ball too easily at times, and that’s something we’ll definitely work on. Against a team like New Zealand, you get punished if you’re not clinical.”

Captain Riley Norton, who had another solid game at No 5 lock,  echoed his coach’s sentiments, particularly around the tense closing stages: “Those last 10 minutes were hectic. Momentum kept swinging, and that’s where you learn the most,” Norton said. “We made a few simple errors and lost shape at the breakdown, and that gave them chances.”

Despite that, the Junior Bok skipper stressed the value of the tournament experience: “These are exactly the kind of pressure situations we’ll face at a Junior World Cup. You have to stay composed, control what you can, and trust your systems.”

Both Foote and Norton agreed that while the draw was bittersweet, the broader objective had been achieved.

“We’ve won the tournament, we’ve tested our depth, and we’ve learned a lot about ourselves,” said Foote. “This experience will serve us well going forward.”

Foote was also quick to credit the passionate Eastern Cape public for their role in the tournament’s success.

“To have over 40 000 people through the turnstiles across the three rounds is simply incredible,” he said. “From the moment we arrived, Gqeberha made us feel right at home.

“The energy in the stadium was incredible, and that support – right up until the final whistle of today’s game – was a massive factor for the boys. We are deeply grateful to every fan who came out to back us. They were truly fantastic.”

The SA u20s finished the tournament unbeaten, and with 13 points, after they and NZ both earned three points from the closing game – two points for the draw and one bonus point for scoring four tries each. Both Australia and Argentina finished on seven points.

Mphahlaza, the captain of Middies, produced a King Price King of the Match performance as the home side comfortably clinched the Middelburg derby, newly incorporated into the King Price Derby Series, with a 26-10 win over the Rooi Bulle of HTS Middelburg on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides started slowly and nervously. However, Mphahlaza’s vision led to the Suzuki Game Changing Moment of the Match, which ended with right wing Kgontse Masilela rounding off a fluent Middies‘ backline move.

His counterpart on the left wing, Kgotso Pheta, matched that try-scoring feat just before the final whistle, diving over in the corner to ensure the Rooi Bulle’s defeat.

Much of Hoërskool Middelburg’s attacking dominance was made possible by another standout performance from their tighthead prop, Dewald du Toit. He was a key contributor to Middies’ 26-25 victory over Die Hoërskool Menlopark in the opening round of the Virseker Noordvaal Cup last week, with his relentless work earning his side a decisive penalty, which was a deserved reward for an outstanding 70-minute performance.

Despite being starved of possession and momentum, HTS Middelburg’s inside centre, Nathan Janse van Rensburg, delivered a strong performance in midfield. His industrious defensive work, in particular, made him stand out, and his efforts were ultimately rewarded with the visitors’ only try of the match.

Rooi Bulle flyhalf, Ruan Janse van Rensburg, converted the try and also slotted a penalty to account for the visitors’ other five points.

Bishops‘ head coach Ryan Julius believes his side’s 4-0 victory over their southern suburbs’ rivals Wynberg Boys’ High will add fire to their belly for the rest of the season.

Bishops delighted their home supporters by delivering one of their best performances of their 2026 campaign at the Woodlands AstroTurf on Friday evening.

The Bish-Berg derby, as it’s known, has delivered some cracking contests over the past couple of seasons, with the teams sharing the spoils more often than not.

Last year, it was Wynberg, though, who had the edge, winning the games 3-1 and 3-2, respectively.

Replicating that feat this season was always going to be a tough task for coach Devan Stanton‘s side, especially considering how much the Bishops’ team has grown over the past 12 months.

They went into the clash on the back of a commendable seventh-place finish at the Hibbert Shield, while Wynberg was eager to bounce back after going 2-3 down against Fairmont High in their most recent outing.

Bishops controlled the match early on and made life tough for the visitors, boosted by the roaring crowd on the sidelines. They built up early momentum and turned that into goals.

Max Morgan led the way with a brace, while experienced campaigners, Luc Dicey and Callum Anderson, also got their names on the scoresheet.

“The Wynberg match is always a very interesting fixture with lots of emotions,” Julius told SuperSport Schools News.

“With that said, I think my boys executed the tactical game plan exceptionally well through each quarter.

“They implemented what we trained this week to perfection and played with immense freedom.”

At the Hibbert Shield, one of the most noticeable improvements from Bishops was their ability to move the ball quickly and play on the counter while keeping their defence tight. They continued that trend against Wynberg.

“I think they were in sync, shared the ball between the team, and defended incredibly well, too,” Julius said.

“As a coach, I would say it was the closest to being the most complete performance we have had.”

Bishops is next in action at Paarl Gimnasium, and coach Julius admitted there’s more his charges need to improve.

“We realise we still have a lot of work to do,” he said. “That leaves us thirsty and hungry to achieve more, and that’s very encouraging for us.”

Stellenbosch hosted a 19:30 kickoff on Friday evening, with Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) welcoming Hoërskool Durbanville for the first time in 30 years. That’s as far as PRG’s welcome extended, though, as they overpowered Durbies 64-19.

Gerrit Bekker, at blindside flank, and hooker Chris Meyburgh scored two tries each for the Maroon Machine. Both also made big contributions on defence and deserved to get onto the scoresheet.

Durbies struggled to keep up with the pace Ou Polla’s Boys set. By halftime, they were 0-31 down, and needed to change their approach. After the interval, they responded with quicker line speed on defence, which limited the hosts’ opportunities to finish out wide.

Durbanville’s efforts were rewarded with two tries from their powerful left wing, Kyle Doyle. He and utility back Farrel-Leigh Dido were the two opposition players able to outmuscle and outpace the Paul Roos defence, which is how they scored their tries.

The Maroon Machine dominated the set-piece battle, however, and that meant they enjoyed a surfeit of possession as a result.

In the second half, they also outscored Durbanville five tries to three, sealing a comfortable victory by 45 points.
