    Puntemakers:

Garsfontein 90 (36) – Drieë: Junaide Stuart (3), Junade Pasensie (2), Aiden King (2), Stephan Pretorius (2), James Schnetler, Jacques Swarts, Luann Olivier, Aiden Holtzhausen, Wian van den Berg. Doelskoppe: Junade Pasensie (10). Menlopark 14 (7) – Drieë: Ruan Strydom, Logan Botha. Doelskoppe: Andru Kuhn (2).

Nelspruit 33 (10) – Drieë: Ronaldo van Rensburg, Vaughn van Zyl, Lindani Ndlela, Jordan Pretorius. Doelskoppe: John Duncan (2). Strafdoele: Duncan (3). Marais Viljoen 15 (5) – Drieë: Brandon Els, Tyron Bouw, Weon van der Vyver.

Grey High School and Selborne College asserted their supremacy in the Eastern Cape, picking up victories over St Andrew’s College, and Cambridge High School respectively over the weekend.

Grey travelled to Makhanda for the clash and won 2-1, while Selborne thumped Cambridge 6-0 away from home.

Those results were expected, as they have been the standout teams in the province this year, although St Andrew’s has not been far behind them. In fact, all three posted perfect records at the Tony Godding Festival at the start of the season.

Grey and Selborne are unbeaten this season in their respective regions and, despite both tasting defeat at the Hibbert Shield earlier this month, they have continued to make good progress.

Heading into the clash in Makhanda, coach Andrew Beynon’s Grey side had racked up three impressive performances in succession, beating Queen’s College 6-0, Woodridge College 6-1, and Pearson High School 7-1.

St Andrew’s, who have enjoyed a strong season, were always going to ask questions of the Gqeberha side, and they made it tough on the visitors.

Grey, however, is a side that’s managed to find answers throughout their campaign, and they, once more, produced the goods when it counted, scoring through Logan Goddard-Ford and the lively Luke Tait.

Tait has been on a rich goal scoring run in recent matches, including scoring a hattrick against Queen’s on Grey’s reunion weekend. He’ll take that confidence into the Eastern Province A side, which is set to do battle at this year’s SASHOC National Week in Bloemfontein next month.

The clash was also Grey’s last of the term. Their next action is on 12 July, when they host York High School.

East London’s Selborne College comprehensively outplayed Cambridge High away from home.

Last week, coach KJ Friend’s side dominated Dale College, thumping the side from Qonce 10-1.

Against Cambridge, they picked up from where they left off. This time around, Waeden Plaatjes scored a hattrick, skipper Tre’ Gilbert contributed a double, and Kungothando Macanda added another to complete the 6-0 drubbing.

Selborne face a much tougher challenge next weekend when they take on St Andrew’s College.

    Other matches

On Friday afternoon, Woodridge College scored a 2-1 win over Victoria Park in the first match of the weekend.

Hudson Park, after a lengthy break, was back in action, and travelled to Komani to face Queen’s College.

That clash ended in a 2-2 draw, with Ayola Rubushe and the multitalented Dante May scoring for the East London side. Bevaneo Maytham and Brett Hoffmann struck for the home side.

Kingswood College also picked up an impressive win away from home, scoring five unanswered goals against Westering High.

    RESULTS

    Queen’s College 2-2 Hudson Park
St Andrew’s College 1-2 Grey High
    Cambridge High 0-6 Selborne College
Westering High School 0-5 Kingswood College

Paul Roos Gimnasium head coach, Michael Baker will feel a sense of relief after his side produced arguably their most clinical performance of the season to dismantle Wynberg Boys’ High 7-1 on the Maties Astroturf on Friday night.

The Stellenbosch outfit, who, by their standards, haven’t quite reached their full potential this year, looked like a different outfit in front of their supporters in their final match of the term.

They were ruthless going forward, capitalised on the large number of opportunities they created, and their defence was hardly tested.

The home side headed into the clash after picking up a 1-0 win over their rivals, Paarl Gimnasium, the previous week away from home.

Wynberg, on the other hand, had dominated their encounter against Durbanville, winning 5-1 on their home turf.

However, that was quickly forgotten, as the Cape Town side was put under pressure early on with Baker’s boys taking control of ball possession and territory.

Within the first seven minutes, PRG was awarded four penalty corners but failed to convert them due to poor execution. However, they made the fifth PC count, with their captain Reuben Sendzul calmly slotting to break the deadlock.

That was the only goal scored in the first chukka, and PRG went into the break knowing they should’ve scored more.

In the second chukka, the hosts turned up the tempo and were rewarded with three goals, which, essentially, put away the match.

First up, Joshua Smit found himself in space inside the circle. After receiving the ball, he danced his way past two defenders before placing the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0.

PRG were not about to rest on their laurels and soon after that it was the turn of Barend Geldenhuys to get his name on the score sheet.

Geldenhuys, who would’ve entered the clash gutted after failing to convert some good goal-scoring opportunities last weekend, looked sharp, and just before halftime he doubled his tally to see his team cruising at 4-0 to the good at the interval.

In the third chukka, the Stellenbosch side maintained their intensity and they quickly made it 5-0 through Keith Siebrits, before Sendzul, via another penalty corner drag flick, made it 6-0, much to the delight of those in maroon blazers.

Wynberg mustered a consolation goal through a penalty stroke, scored by Dayle Gertson, after PRG goalkeeper Beor van Reenen fouled a Wynberg player inside the circle.

Paul Roos, though, had the final say, with Louán van Zyl completing the scoring.

With no goals in the fourth chukka, the match ended 7-1, and in the process, PRG recorded their biggest winning margin in the Western Cape league so far this season.

Baker’s side takes a break for exams and provincial action for some of the players until 12 July. Then, they face a big return clash against South African College High School (SACS) in Stellenbosch.

Earlier this season, Paul Roos won 6-5 from the penalty spot in the final of the Hibbert Shield against SACS. However, in a more recent derby match, SACS thumped the Stellenbosch side 6-2.

Wynberg faces the same SACS’ outfit next weekend in a southern suburbs’ derby, which promises fireworks.

    Other matches

SACS and Bishops Diocesan College were, meanwhile, convincing winners on Saturday, outplaying DF Malan and Stellenberg High respectively.

After scoring 11 goals against Stellenberg last weekend, SACS returned to action at home and, this time, overwhelmed DF Malan 8-0.

Litha Kraai scored five goals in last week’s win, and this time around netted four. Matthew Jones contributed a brace, while Aiden Hughes and Cohen Williams completed the scoring.

At Stellenberg, Bishops continued their fine form, outscoring the hosts 6-1.

David Handley bagged a double, while Adam Giggle, Albert Steyn, Joshua Mettler, and Andrew Raubenheimer also scored.

With that win, Bishops remains unbeaten in the Western Cape, and they have scored a total of 17 goals in their past three matches against Stellenberg (6-1), Paarl Boys’ High (6-0), and Fairmont High (5-0).

In Paarl, coach Jacques Grobler’s Paarl Gimnasium side got back to winning ways, beating a resilient Parel Vallei 4-2.

Somerset College ended their term’s schedule with a 4-0 win over Bridgehouse, while a testy clash between Paarl Boys’ High, and Rondebosch was called off at half-time with the sides level at 0-0. What might the repercussions be of that decision?

    Western Cape Results

    Durbanville 3-0 Westerford
    SACS 8-0 DF Malan
    Somerset College 4-0 Bridge House
    Stellenberg 0-6 Bishops
Paarl Boys’ High 0-0 Rondebosch Boys’ High
Paul Roos Gimnasium 7-1 Wynberg Boys’ High
    Paarl Gimnasium 4-2 Parel Vallei

  • Parktown outplays St Benedict’s as 100-cap duo stars

Parktown's resurgence continued on Saturday as they withstood a stiff St Benedict's challenge to add another win to their season's tally.
Parktown’s resurgence was reaffirmed on Saturday as they withstood a stiff St Benedict’s challenge to add another win to their season’s tally.

On a busy hockey weekend for Gauteng schools, Parktown Boys’ High‘s impressive season continued to gain steam as they edged out St Benedict’s College in an entertaining derby clash in Bedfordview.

There were five goals scored, with the visitors claiming a 3-2 victory, thanks to a penalty corner from Ryan Venter, a brilliant field goal from Miles Makudo, and a penalty stroke from Robert Bailey.

Commenting on the contest, Parktown coach Kyle Reddy said: “The game was hard fought. St Benedict’s did well to push us, but we stuck to the plan and kept knocking at the door and eventually got the late winner. Brilliant team effort!”

Saturday’s game also saw two of the Parktown boys achieve significant personal milestones, with Ryan Venter and Nicholas Townsend picking up their 100th caps.

“I’m proud of these two young men,” Reddy said. “From being young players in the first team in grade 10, they have grown into phenomenal hockey players.

“I’m glad Ryan could get a goal to mark this occasion, Nicholas was unfortunate not to get a goal, but his effort won us the penalty stroke that ultimately won us the game. Shows what key players they have been and continue to be for Parktown,” he added.

King Edward VII (KES), meanwhile, broke open a tight stalemate to secure a 1-0 victory over Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in Johannesburg.

It took until there were seven minutes remaining in the contest for KES to find the winner, with a PC bringing them the all-important only goal of the match.

Meanwhile, St John’s College came back from 0-2 down to hold Jeppe High School for Boys to a 2-2 draw at Jeppe.

The Zebras scored one in each of the first two chukkas to lead 2-0 but St John’s found a reply just before half-time to pull within one. Five minutes from the end of the contest, they converted a penalty corner to snatch a hard-fought draw.

In a big clash of Pretoria schools, Garsfontein and Menlopark played to a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, Pretoria Boys High repeated that score in their match at Michaelhouse.

St Stithians, playing in Pietermaritzburg, claimed a 3-2 win over St Charles College, and St David’s Marist Inanda ran out 2-0 winners over Waterkloof.

    RESULTS

St Benedict’s College 3-2 Parktown Boys
    King Edward VII 1-0 Affies
Jeppe High School for Boys 2-2 St John’s College

It must have been a conflicting day for the Badenhorst family as the home team’s exciting young inside centre, Sam Badenhorst, starred in their victory with two great tries.

Badenhorst’s father, Aldi, captained the Wynberg Boys’ High first XV in 1990 and was the school’s head prefect. His uncle, Charl, was the deputy head prefect in 1992 and also captained the first team and, before them, André Badenhorst, Sam’s grandfather, was the head prefect and captain in 1963.

Sam Badenhorst has already represented South Africa at an international level. He was a member of the SA u18 Sevens team which won bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in 2023 and has been one of the unsung heroes in this year’s Paul Roos squad.

The Maroon Machine‘s big hooker, Altus Rabie, also crossed for a brace of tries as they kept their perfect record for the season alive.

The scoreboard does not give a complete reflection of the game, however.

Wynberg played some fine rugby to make the mighty side from Stellenbosch sweat in the first half, with their captain Aden da Costa leading by example and setting the tone with an early try.

His opposite number, Paul Roos’ captain Riley Norton, returned the favour in the final moments of the first half to give his side a 26-20 lead at the break. Norton was also prominent in the second half as PRG surged to a decisive 50-25 win.

The big loosehead prop, Ben Matthews, got the last word in for Wynberg, with the final try, but by then the home team had already ensured they would win for an 11th straight time this season.

Wynberg flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed, impressed once again, along with the speedy wing, Albert Louwrens, who scored a double for the visitors.

PRG flyhalf Joshua Dampies also had another excellent day, contributing 15 points off the kicking tee while ensuring his side played on the front foot.

Next term, the Maroon Machine still has to get through Oakdale Landbou, Bishops Diocesan College, Stellenberg and Boland Landbou before a big showdown against their rivals from Bloemfontein, Grey College, in August.

It’s a tough run of fixtures to close out the season, but Paul Roos hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down and it will take a huge performance to stop them this year.

Meanwhile, Paarl Boys’ High came out on top in a thriller against Rondebosch Boys’ High.

Boishaai centre Viaan Mentoor starred, contributing 16 points through a try, a penalty and four conversions.

David Simon enjoyed a memorable game in combination with his fullback, Dylan Miller, as the duo scored all 28 points for Rondebosch and got their side to within eight of the Boishaai total.

The Paarl boys held a 31-16 lead with 10 minutes to go but the visitors lifted the tempo at the end of the game to score twice and get within striking distance.

For the hosts, Shane Lee Simonse and Janeal Davids looked dangerous every time they were afforded space, and their big forward pack did well to stand up to the challenge from the Cape Town side. The return of Justin Amos to the ‘Bosch lineup helped them keep the Paarl Boys’ High pack under pressure.

Rondebosch takes on Bishops Diocesan College in their final outing of the term next weekend and would like nothing more than to return to winning ways with a victory over their arch-rivals.

  • Northwood wins on Old Boys’ Day, while Michaelhouse draws with PBHS

In an entertaining clash, Michaelhouse and Pretoria Boys High shared the spoils in Balgowan.
In an entertaining clash, Michaelhouse and Pretoria Boys High shared the spoils in Balgowan.

Northwood put on a spectacular show for their old boys, scoring a 2–1 win over Maritzburg College in a humdinger of an encounter, while Michaelhouse shared the spoils with Pretoria Boys High School, with the teams playing to a 1-1 draw on the Punchbowl Astro on Saturday.

As they have done consistently so far this season, Kyle Emerson’s charges sought to impose themselves early in their encounter, and they took the fight to Northwood. They were confident on the ball and dominated possession. Earlier in the season, Maritzburg College was merely good at retaining possession but did not make circle entries or create enough chances. Against Northwood, they did so and found an early goal.

Northwood could have gone 0-2 down a few times in the contest. A second goal would have buried the hosts but, thankfully for coach Justin Collins, the Knights’ defence held firm.

“They outplayed us in the first half and put a lot of pressure on us in many phases. Credit to Kyle Emerson for the good tactics,” Collins said after the match.

When they emerged for the second half, Northwood was a different outfit. They were better tactically and were able to pressure their visitors for longer periods, while also creating chances. One of those chances resulted in a goal by Trent Jessop, with the equaliser giving the home side renewed hope that they could turn the match around all the way and not settle for a draw.

Andrew Deeb then struck to edge Northwood ahead.

“Credit to my support staff for putting the right plans in place. When our first goal went in, we knew we were going to turn the tide.

“I am proud of the guys for staying involved as long as they did and for showing belief in the way they did.

“We conceded short corners but defended well. The guys controlled their emotions in difficult periods. It was a nice win for the old boys,” Collins said.

In the KZN midlands, Michaelhouse dominated the early exchanges of their match against PBHS. Nick Bérichon’s charges took to the astro with a clear plan, one based on clean connections, and those clean connecttions created a first-half goal from Murray Hall-Jones, who converted a penalty corner variation.

“We just wanted to move the ball very quickly. We feel like we can open any opposition when we do so,” Bérichon explained.

Despite trailing 0-1, PBHS took control of the second half, thanks to some outstanding work in the midfield, which saw the visitors wrestle control of the game. “We didn’t manage their midfielders as well as we would have wanted. I think that’s where they took control. We found ourselves stuck in deep defence, defending for long periods. That’s something we need to work on,” Bérichon said.

The visitors created their fair share of chances in the second half but converted only one of those into a goal, with Marco Upton converting a penalty stroke to level matters.

Michael Upton was for Pretoria Boys High's goal scorer in their draw with Michaelhouse.

From then onwards, the visitors controlled the flow of the game. While coach Jacques Klopper was disappointed that his charges were unable to convert most of the chances they created, the PBHS coach was happy with his team’s ability to bounce back.

“It was also a good experience for the boys. They get to travel and see other parts of the country, make new friends, and different provinces play a different brand of hockey, so they learn the game from a different angle,” Klopper reflected on the derby experience.

After a fairly slow start, Affies stepped up a gear in the second half of their game against King Edward VII (KES) on Saturday, producing a clinical display, to claim a 52-26 victory in Johannesburg.

KES scored the first try of the day, within the first five minutes of play, when their big 8th-man and captain Kebotile Maake excellently charging down an attempted clearance kick from the boot of Reuben Pienaar. He gathered the ball to score with ease and gave the hosts an early advantage.

Affies, though, have shown themselves to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the 2024 season, and while KES held their own in the first 20 minutes, they were hard pressed to keep with a barrage of attacking plays from the Wit Bulle.

The side from Pretoria struck back late in the opening stanza, scoring two tries in quick succession, through scrumhalf Zirk Meyer and wing Eagan Roux, which helped the visitors edge ahead at the break. At halftime only four points separated the sides, with Affies 18-14 to the good.

In the second half, however, they came out all guns’ blazing, pushing deep into KES territory, while dominating the battle for possession. By increasing the pace of the game, Affies were able to showcase their attacking abilities, which led to a 34-point boost on the scoreboard.

The Wit Bulle impressed with their ball handling. There was no better example than when Eagan Roux scored his second, following a brilliant offload from fullback Ruben Groenewald, after the ball had been moved gracefully down the backline.

Affies favored the left-hand side of the field, probing away there until it brought them a try from Nico Grobler, which echoed Roux’s earlier effort.

KES added a further 12 points in the second half, with their prolific wing Haniel Monkoti finishing the day with another hat-trick. He’s been a regular on the score sheet, week in and week out, and will surely be in the running for a Craven Week place.

Fly half Vusi Moyo converted one out of his two opportunities in the second half but was a little out of his groove. However, a fine penalty in the first half, from a difficult angle, from in front of the Affies’ supporters, highlighted his ability.

His opposite number, Reuben Pienaar has shown up well against KES in the past and he was on song once more against the Red Army, tallying 22 points, which included four conversions, three penalties and a try. He also orchestrated the Affies’ backline with precision and directed play well with crisp passes and strategic kicks.

The mid-year exams are approaching, but Affies faces Die Hoërskool Menlopark next weekend and they will be eager to build on the momentum they’ve accrued in an impressive season. They’ve lost only three times, to the top three teams in the country – Paul Roos Gimnasium, Grey College and Paarl Gimnasium – by a combined total of just 10 points.

KES will put their rugby campaign on hold until 13 July, when they face Pretoria Boys High for a second time this season. They won the first meeting, in Pretoria, 24-14.

Scorers: King Edward VII 26 (14) – Tries: Kebotile Maake, Haniel Monkoti (3). Conversions: Vusi Moyo (3). Affies 52 (18) – Tries: Eagan Roux (2), Zirk Meyer (2), Nicolaas Grobler, Ruben Groenewald, Ruben Pienaar. Conversions: Ruben Pienaar (4), Penalties: Ruben Pienaar (3).
