  • Schoolboys in recruiting tug-o-war

The business of poaching/attracting schoolboy rugby players has reached enormous proportions in the Valke Rugby Union.
It has even reached the stage where a charge of kidnapping is reported to have been laid with the police against two members of the staff of Dr EG Jansen of Boksburg, the destination of two Under-14 schoolboys who are excellent rugby players.

The school from which they were ‘poached’ is Vereeniging Gimnasium, whose headmaster is Dries van Heerden, a well-known rugby man who at one stage was the chairman of South African Schools.

According to a report in Beeld newspaper, last Friday, January 17, at 16.00 two teachers from Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen came to the Vereeniging Gim’s hostel and went off with two Under-14 boys who are ‘[brilliant rugby players’. Nobody at Vereeniging Gim – not the housemaster or any other member of staff – had been told about the action.
According to Van Heerden, only the housemaster or the boys’ parents could give them permission to go out.
Apparently the vehicle arrived and within minutes the two boys got aboard and left.
Van Heerden said: ‘If something happens to the boys, we are in troiuble.’

The two boys concerned were ‘discovered’ by Vereeniging Gim in Stellenbosch in 2013 and started at Vereeniging Gim in 2013. Gim paid the boys school fees and boarding fees in 2013, a bursary dependent on performance.
According to the Gim Director of Rugby, Doom Gouws, Gim intended doing the same this year.

One of the two members of staff who picked the boys up, Uwe Sauer, was the boys’ coach at Vereeniging Gim last year, but then moved to EG Jansen, where he is coaching the Under-15 team this year, the age group into which the boys fall.

According to Sauer, the boys had wanted to move to EG Jansen last year, but he had told them to stay put – but they could contact him later.
He said that on January 17 he already had the written permission from the parents for the change to be made.

The principal of EG Jansen, Leon de Beer, said that the housemaster was not available at the time of the incident and that there was nobody who could give them an exeat.. according to him, the boys would live with an (unnamed) member of staff.

Natasha Andries, the mother of one of the boys, claimed that she had sent Vereeniging Gim a fax saying that she wanted her son to move to EG Jansen as he had been unhappy from the start at Gim.
    She said: ‘Nobody was kidnapped.’

Van Heerden said that the parents would be expected to pay back the school and hostel fees.

  • Rugby Goggles available

The International Rugby Board, which approves what players wear or disapproves of something that players wear or want to wear, has approved has approved the use of a particular kind of goggles for those with seeing problems who have problems with their vision.

It sounds exorbitant but the goggles have been especially designed with rugby in mind and has nothing in them which could cause hurt of any sort.

IRB’s head of technical services Steve Griffiths, a former Test referee, said: “Rugby is a Game for all and the IRB recognises that not everyone who needs corrective glasses can wear contact lenses, particularly children, and so we have been collaborating with a leading manufacturer to design and rigorously test a pair of Rugby Goggles that will be safe and effective in a Rugby environment. We believe we have done that now and this trial is good news for anyone with eyesight issues who wishes to play the Game.”

The manufacturers are an Italian firm specialising in glasses for sportsmen and the goggles can be obtained only directly from them.

The approved Rugby Goggles are not available in retail outlets.

The goggles, which may be used at all levels of rugby, are on sale from 22 January 2014 and those who use them are expected to report on their use.

The new Rugby Goggles have been developed to enable people who require corrective lenses to wear goggles that are safe to themselves, their team-mates and opponents. They will also allow people with monocular vision or chronic eye conditions to wear them while playing contact rugby. The approved Rugby Goggles are not designed to provide extra protection for players with chronic eye conditions, but if such players consider them to be beneficial they can be worn for that purpose.

Features of the approved Rugby Goggles include high-speed impact resistance, anti-abrasion surfaces, anti-fogging, UV protection and a specially designed strap with no clips, buckles or sharp edges. Only those Rugby Goggles bearing the IRB trial-approved logo can be worn with referees empowered to make the necessary checks.

In order to qualify to wear the Rugby Goggles, the player will need the confirmation of an ophthalmologist (or similar medical professional) although Unions are required to participate in the trial before a player under its jurisdiction can participate in the trial.

The Rugby Goggles are only available in one size and are designed to fit anyone (by adjusting the headband).

The Rugby Goggles will not be provided with prescription lenses in them. Once the Rugby Goggles have been received, the player will need to take them to an optician and have plastic lenses inserted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If the player does not require corrective lenses, the player may remove the lens-insert in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and may use the Rugby Goggles as provided.

It is only through that feedback that the IRB can gather enough information to ascertain the longer-term suitability of Rugby Goggles for use in Rugby beyond the lifetime of the trial.

  • National coaching symposium kicks off 2014

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) hosts a ground-breaking national coaching symposium in Stellenbosch later this month where ideas will be shared between coaches from junior provincial to Springbok level.
All provincial coaches have been invited to the symposium – an initiative of SARU’s High Performance Department – which will run from 27 to 31 January at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport.
Seminars will be led by the three Springbok assistant coaches Johann van Graan, Ricardo Loubscher and John McFarland, as well as national coaching consultants Pieter de Villiers, Louis Koen and Chean Roux and SARU High Performance General Manager Rassie Erasmus and Willie Maree, SARU’s Technical Support Manager.
All facets of game play and preparation will be on the agenda as well as technical analysis.
“As far as we know, this is the first time we’ll host a national coaching symposium on this scale,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SARU.
“Our Springbok coaches will share their coaching philosophy and principles but we’ll also get feedback and see how our elite professional coaches can work together to improve our approach to the game on a nationwide scale.
“We’ve had a great response from the provinces to the initiative and have also invited the coaches of the four SARU Academies, established in 2012 in Border, Eastern Province, South Western Districts and Boland.”
The High Performance Department’s cooperation with the 14 provinces and the Vodacom Super Rugby franchises will be stepped up in the coming months when members of the Springbok coaching team and SARU’s Mobi-Unit visit the provinces to work with the players on the training field.
“We’ve worked really closely together with the Super Rugby franchises and the provinces since last year, and it’s something we want to increase this season,” said Erasmus.
“We’ve extended invitations to all the provinces and franchises and will assist them wherever they require us. This will include the Springboks’ Medical team, whose members are also available for assistance.
“I believe we have started reaping the rewards of closer cooperation between SARU and the provinces and that everyone can gain from working together. The Springbok coaches and the Mobi-Unit have put in a lot of very hard work for the benefit of rugby in South Africa and we’re very excited about the symposium and the coming months of working together.”

  • Kwaggas have impressive support team for 2014

Kwaggas have impressive support team for 2014

OuteniquaThe Kwaggas from Outeniqua in George was one of the top team in South Africa in 2013. The side’s coaching staff will be boosted by one of the best backline coaches in the country, Abre Minnie who moved back from Kimberley to George. Minnie coached the Griqualand West senior side in the Currie Cup as well as helped with the coaching of Noord-Kaap’s first XV. Minnie will be Outeniqua’s technical assistant.

The side’s head coach for 2014 is Pieter Cloete. Cloete, Martin Oosthuizen and Jacques Wolfaardt coached the side in 2013. Oosthuizen and Robert Gerber will assist with the coaching. Oosthuizen have coached Outeniqua’s first XV in 2004-05 and 2012-2014. Gerber played for South Western Districts. Cloete also coached South Western Districts Craven Week side from 2005 until 2008. The side was crowned unofficial champions at the 2008 edition of the tournament in Pretoria.

Besides Minnie the team also got former Springbok prop, Ian Hattingh as their scrum consultant. Hattingh matriculated at De Wet Nel THS in Kroonstad. Former Blue Bulles, SWD and Valke flyhalf Rynhard van As will assist the kickers, while Walter Lutcsh will take care of the conditioning.

The Kwaggas will play Boland Landbou, Garsfontein and Tranvalia at the Pukke Skouspel in Potchefstroom. The match against Garsfontein might the biggest challenge as Garsies is one of the up-and-coming powers in schoolboy rugby in South Africa. At Wildeklawer they will meet Grey College of Bloemfontein. After beating the side from the City of Roses last year at the Kearsney College Easter Festival this will be one of the top fixtures in the country for 2014. The Kwaggas also defeated Grey in 2004 under the captaincy of Jaco Colyn.
