The Sharks and DHL Western Province this past weekend gained invaluable momentum in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship as they registered important victories to keep up with the pace-setters as the pool stages approaches a close.
The Sharks hopped into second place on the standings above the MTN Golden Lions, although the Johannesburg team has a game in hand, and Western Province moved up into fourth place following victories this past weekend. With only five weeks of matches remaining and six teams still in the running for semifinal places, these victories will be invaluable.
The Sharks defeated the MTN Golden Lions 25-9 at Ellis Park, while DHL Western Province registered a 45-36 victory against the Leopards in Potchefstroom and the Toyota Free State edged Border 28-20 in Bloemfontein.
MTN Golden Lions 9 (6) The Sharks 25 (20)
At Ellis Park the Sharks outscored the MTN Golden Lions three tries to none, with the home side having only three penalties to show for their efforts. Sharks flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis was in particularly good form and scored points in every possible way. His personal tally of 15 points included a try, two conversions, a penalty and a drop goal, which assisted in placing his team on the front foot. While the Lions will be disappointed with their defeat they produced a solid second half display and did well to shut out the Sharks. But unfortunately they struggled on attack as they battled to breach the visitors defence.
Scorers:
MTN Golden Lions 9 (6) – Penalties: Brandan Hewit (3). The Sharks 25 (20) – Tries: Jean-Luc du Plessis, Michael Cloete, Thembalethu Williams. Conversions: Du Plessis (2). Penalty: Du Plessis. Drop Goal: Du Plessis.

The teams were neck-on-neck in the first half with the Leopards taking a 26-24 lead, but three tries to two by Western Province after the break and better goal-kicking allowed the Cape side to secure their third victory of the season.
The Leopards, however, managed to secure a bonus point for racking up more than four tries.

Leopards 36 (26) – Tries: Andries du Plooy, Dean Stokes (2), Lloyd Greeff (2), Roche Steenkamp. Conversions: Lourens Boddington (3). In Bloemfontein, the Toyota Free State built up a 14-3 lead thanks to two first-half tries. But Border showed great determination to make their presence felt in the second half, which paid off as they outscored the Free State three tries to two. The Bloemfontein team’s flyhalf Pieter Jordaan also did his bit to secure the victory as he slotted over all four conversions to add to his two tries, to keep his team ahead on the scoreboard.
Scorers:
Toyota Free State 28 (14) – Tries: Louis Venter, Marthinus Oosthuizen, Pieter Jordaan (2). Conversions: Pieter Jordaan (4). Border 20 (3) – Tries: Athenkosi Mabinda, Conor-Terrah Brockschmidt, Johannes Jonker. Conversion: Werner Barnard. Penalty: Werner Barnard.
The DHL Western Province Under-21 team this past weekend extended their lead at the top of the log in the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship to nine points to boost their home semifinal hopes as the countdown begins to the final stages of the competition.
The second-placed Vodacom Blue Bulls, however, have a game in hand, which could allow them to reduce the gap. But with the third-placed Sharks and fourth-placed Toyota Free State Cheetahs also having played eight matches, Western Province are in a comfortable position with four matches remaining in the round-robin stages.
In the weekend’s matches, DHL Western Province registered their third 50-point score in eight matches as they thumped the Leopards 54-35 in Potchefstroom, the MTN Golden Lions defeated the The Sharks 39-31 at Ellis Park and Toyota Free State beat Border 45-29 in Bloemfontein.
Leopards 35 (16) DHL Western Province 54 (28)
In Potchefstroom, Western Province were in fantastic form from the outset as they scored two tries in six minutes early in the first half, which demonstrated their attacking prowess. By half time they had secured their bonus point try, indicating that they were on track for a big win. Leopards flyhalf Warren Gilbert, however, kept his team in the match as he slotted over two penalties and a drop goal to add to a try by Marnus Tack to secure 16 points in the first half.
The visitors continued their dominance on attack in the second half, which earned them another four tries and increased their total for the match to eight. Lapses on defence, however, allowed the Leopards to cross the tryline three times in the second half, which earned them a consolation bonus-point try.
Scorers:
Leopards 35 (16) – Tries: Eugene Pettit, Jaco Grobler, Marnus Tack, Ryno Smith. Conversions: Warren Gilbert (3). Penalties: Warren Gilbert (2). Drop Goal: Warren Gilbert. MTN Golden Lions 39 (19) Toyota Free State 31 (18)
A superior try tally combined with a good kicking day for MTN Golden Lions fullback Marais Schmidt guided the Johannesburg team to victory against The Sharks at Ellis Park. The first half was hard-fought despite the Lions scoring three tries to the Sharks’ two, as Sharks flyhalf Robert du Preez kicked two penalties to trail the home team 19-18 at the break.
The Lions built on their strong display in the second half as they scored another two tries to only one by the Sharks, while Schmidt slotted over two penalties to cancel out an extra two by Du Preez. This was sufficient to seal the victory for the Lions.
Scorers:
MTN Golden Lions 39 (19) – Tries: Damian Engledoe, Harold Vorster, Jacques Nel, Marais Schmidt, Stephan de Wit. Conversions: Marais Schmidt (4). Penalties: Schmidt (2). Toyota Free State 31 (18) – Tries: Alcino Izaacs, Allan Dell, Dylan Nel. Conversions: Duncan Campbell, Robert du Preez. Penalties: Robert du Preez (4).
Toyota Free State 45 (14) Border 29 (15)
Toyota Free State, meanwhile, bounced back from a 15-14 deficit in the first half against Border to claim their fifth victory of the season and remain in fourth position on the log. Both teams dotted down tries in a close first half, but an additional penalty by Border handed them an edge on the scoreboard.
Three tries in 16 minutes for the Free State after the break pushed them into a comfortable lead. Border fought back hard and tightened up their defence, resulting in a tense final quarter, in which the teams each scored another two tries. The defeat for Border marked their eighth in as many matches, although they earned a bonus point for scoring four tries.
