The 2025 schoolboy hockey season is heating up, and it will reach boiling point this weekend with three major tournaments bringing together many of the country’s best teams.

Jeppe High School for Boys will host the Nomads Hockey Festival, in Johannesburg, while Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) will welcome top teams to the Founders Festival, in Pretoria.

Durban will be treated to the Belgotex Sport Coastal Cup, and all the action will be live on SuperSport Schools.

The Nomads Festival features some of South Africa’s most well-established hockey-playing schools.

An abundance of talent will be on display at the Boden AstroTurf at Jeppe. We take a look at five players you should keep an eye on.

    Reagan Mudau – Hilton College

Reagan Mudau is a rising star within the Hilton College hockey fraternity. He was a strong performer in 2024, but he appears to have taken a further step forward and is coming into his own in 2025.

He is the co-vice-captain of the side with Matt Thomas, while Xavier Enslin leads the team.

Mudau has a sound understanding of the game, with a strong engine that enables him to work up and down the pitch. He is calm and collected with the ball and has the pace to eliminate opposing players.

His excellence was recognised when he represented the SA u17 team at last year’s Dato Miranwan Cup in Malaysia.

Recently, Mudau made a remarkable comeback after being sidelined for six weeks by injury, and he’s eager to make his mark at Nomads.

Gray van Heerden – Selborne College

Gray van Heerden is a prominent figure in Border Schools hockey and will captain Selborne College in 2025.

His leadership on and off the field has been instrumental in guiding the team through a series of successful matches in the early part of the season.

As a captain, he leads with confidence and inspires his teammates.

His skills and dedication earned him a place in the Border Schools Hockey Association‘s squad for last year’s SASHOC National Week, which was hosted in Bloemfontein.

He’ll set the example for a young Selborne outfit that would love to emulate the 2024 squad, which won all five of their matches at the Nomads Festival, in Pietermarizburg.

Ethan Kapanda – Jeppe High School for Boys

Jeppe centre-back, Ethan Kapanda, is an experienced first-team campaigner who will relish running out for his school on its home turf.

Kapanda has been described as a “strong and old, traditional defender”, who is rock-solid at the back, and always willing to go the extra mile for his teammates.

He has good distribution skills and is a regular goal-scoring contributor at penalty corner time with his drag flicks.

In 2024, he represented Southern Gauteng A at the SASHOC National Week. At the end of the tournament, he was named the Most Valuable Defender.

His leadership skills are visible both on and off the field, which is reflected in the respect his teammates have for him.

Zachary “Zach” Gibbon (Wynberg Boys’ High)

Wynberg Boys’ High is the only Western Cape side heading to Nomads this year, and they’ll be led by Zach Gibbon.

He is one of a small number of players to return to the Wynberg first team, which bade farewell to eight players at the end of last season.

Unfortunately, Gibbon was out injured for much of the 2024 season. He missed out on the Nomads Festival but represented Western Province u18A at the SASHOC National Week. He was also included in the SA u17 side.

Gibbon is also an outstanding cricketer and will look to merge his skills and deliver cracking performances for the Cape side.

    Matthias Visser – Grey College

Visser is one of the most exciting schoolboy hockey defenders in South Africa.

The youngster, from Bloemfontein, enters another season with Grey College, and this year carries heavy responsibilities on his shoulders.

He is solid at the back, has great distribution skills, and can turn on the afterburners easily.

What makes him dangerous, though, are his drag flicks. He is the go-to man for Grey College at PC time and he rarely misfires.

Defending Visser’s powerful shot will be a challenge for the opposition at Nomads.

Ten schools from across the country will travel to Pretoria for the Founders Hockey Festival that will be hosted by Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) from Saturday, 29 March, to Monday, 31 March.

The hosting side’s coach, Colin Mendoza, said he was ecstatic to lead his boys for the first time in the prestigious event. He’ll be assisted by Jaydon Lincoln.

The Founders Festival takes place at u14, u16, and 1st team levels, with the u14 matches being played at Parktown Boys’ High and the u16 games at Pretoria High School for Girls. Day one will see 30 matches taking place.

In the senior category, Northwood School gets the action rolling with an early 07:30 meeting against Rondebosch Boys’ High School. They’ll be followed onto the Astro by St Davids’ Marist Inanda and Dale College, with a repeat of Gauteng versus the Eastern Cape when St Stithians College takes on Queen’s College.

The hosts will kick off their tournament run in the fourth fixture against Kearsney College. Last year, when they hosted the Founders Festival, the KwaZulu-Natal outfit recorded three wins and two draws. In 2025, they’re a young side, but they’re talented.

Mendoza reckoned the Founders Festival will be a tough challenge for all the participants: “I think it is one of the top boys’ tournaments in the country, established in 1982,” he said. “Most of the teams participating will be knocking at getting a top 10 ranking in the country.

“I am very nervous and excited. There are some good schools, and there will be some very hard games,” he told SuperSport Schools about Affies’ chances.

The Pretoria school’s preparations began only two weeks ago, so they’ve had to hit the ground running. However, Mendoza has confidence in his charges.

He explained: “Unfortunately, due to athletics, we only get to do trials at the beginning of March, which leaves very little time to get games in before Founders. So, the preparations were short, but I think the boys will be ready.  We had a few hard sessions, and the boys are looking good.

“Having to host two tournaments (the u16 boys will also be accommodated at Affies) made it a little harder. Jaydon had to step up a bit during prep as I have been busy with all the administration, organising the tournaments. He is an intricate part of the coaching staff.”

Mendoza expressed his appreciation of his number two’s support, adding: “He is a super kid. He currently plays at Tuks in their high-performance side, as well as for Northern Gauteng u21s.” Lincoln is a Jeppe old boy, and his father, Dave, is the Director of Sport at the Kensington school.

The 1st team festival will wrap up on Monday just before midday when Kearsney faces Paarl Gim.

The 11th NMI Toyota North/South tournament will, undoubtedly, feature many of South Africa’s most talented young rugby players in action. However, the battles in the midfield will be the “centre” of attention.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

It is, after all, in that department where the South African Schools selectors will have an abundance of exciting players to choose from, with players like AffiesNicholaas Grobler and Helpmekaar‘s Ty Ax eager to throw their names into the hat for the 13 jersey.

Thus far, however, it has been a two-horse race between Grey College‘s bruising Ethan Adams and Markus Muller, from Paarl Gimnasium, who both feature in SuperSport Schools Plus’s Five to Watch for the 2025 North/South Tournament.

    Ethan Adams – Grey College

Widely known as Ethan “The Tank” Adams, thanks to the popular voice of Johan “Spoed” Smith on SuperSport Schools commentary, Adams has been a massive figure, literally and figuratively, in the rugby giants from Bloemfontein’s backline. In 2024, when he was in grade 11, he was selected for the South African Schools side. His powerful runs in the midfield have made defending against the Grey side especially difficult. Alongside his effectiveness on attack, he doesn’t shy away from putting in some big hits on defence, too.

    Markus Muller – Paarl Gimnasium

The try-scoring machine from Paarl Gimnasium, Markus Muller, will seek to keep making the dive for five in his team’s two outings in Stellenbosch. In 2024, Muller followed in the footsteps of the famous Gimmies’ centre and Springbok captain, Jean de Villiers, when he became the second player from Western Province to make a South African Schools side from the Western Province XV team. His superb vision and big-match temperament will be one of the keys to Gim’s success at the Noord/Suid Tournament.

Ruben Groenewald – Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool

When speaking about a mature head on young shoulders, the Wit Bulle and Affies’ fly half, Ruben Groenewald, comes to mind. Possessing the vision of an experienced 10, Groenewald is the orchestrator of the Wit Bulle’s attack, especially with a dangerous midfield consisting of Divan Fourie and Nicholaas Grobler on his outside. He also possesses a well-considered tactical kicking game, which regularly turns the opposition around and puts Affies’ massive pack of forwards on the front foot.

Gert Kemp – Paul Roos Gimnasium

Talking about tanks, the hosts’ openside flanker, Gert Kemp, deserves a special mention. His high work rate all over the field is immense and that makes him a big weapon in the Maroon Machine‘s arsenal for a second consecutive year. He will give Garsfontein and Noordheuwel all they can handle at breakdown time. Kemp is proficient at creating turnover ball, and that skill makes Paul Roos very dangerous as they turn defence into attack.

Luan van den Berg – Garsfontein

One of the best scrummagers at the tournament this year, Luan “Proppie” van den Berg, will look to lead a dominant Garsfontein pack from the front row. He will be a strong contender for a place in the SA Schools side later this year and will be especially familiar to SA Schools’ scrum coach Cobus van Dyk, who is at the Noord/Suid Tournament with his Waterkloof side.

The 11th NMI Toyota North/South tournament will feature a tasty Western Cape flavour this year.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

The event has moved from Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies), in Pretoria, to Paul Roos Gimnasium, in Stellenbosch, and the newcomers include more newbies from the Western Cape, who will be in action on one of the biggest stages on the South African Schools circuit.

The North/South Tournament has also become a can’t-miss event for selectors ahead of the provincial season, which takes place in July. It’s also a showcase for many players who will earn selection for the SA Schools and SA u18 teams later in the year.

Parel Vallei, one of the newcomers from the Western Cape, makes their bow with an outing against a dangerous Mzwandile Mali XV side. The Eastern Cape team was selected at the Mzwandile Mali Rugby Festival in 2024 and has already travelled across the pond to test the strength of clubs in England. Melkbosstrand, another side from down south, will tackle the Mzawandile Magic.

The hosts, Paul Roos Gimnasium, ranked number one in South Africa in 2024, will get their challenge underway against the powerhouse Bere from Hoërskool Garsfontein. Both sides have clean records after two outings and will have to put it all on the line in a match that promises fireworks up front, especially with Paul Roos’ old-boy and Springbok lock, Andries Bekker, assisting with coaching the Bere’s lineout this year.

Paul Roos will take on Noordheuwel in the main match on the final day, which will also feature a rematch in the curtain-raiser between Grey College and  Jeppe High School for Boys, who sent shock waves through schoolboy rugby last season when they beat the Bloemfontein powerhouse at the festival. Garsfontein, meanwhile, will test themselves against Stellenberg‘s Jade Brigade in their second match.

The first day’s action will be highlighted by a high-intensity clash between Paarl Gimnasium and King Edward VII School (KES), which will see Gim’s robust offence challenged by a strong defensive outfit.

The penultimate day will also feature a scrumptious showdown between two of the countries’ big dogs, Hoër Jongeskool Paarl (Boishaai), and their old foe, Affies. It will be the first of Affies’ big clashes with the big four, which also includes Grey College, Paul Roos and Paarl Gimnasium.

Paarl Gimnasium’s boys’ first-team hockey coach, Jacques Grobler, believes his players have yet to hit their stride despite some positive results in recent weeks. It’s still early in the season.

Gim will make the trip up to Pretoria to take part in the Founders Festival, hosted by Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), this weekend.

The event, which runs from 29-31 March, features some of the country’s hockey powerhouses in action.

Grobler’s side has had adequate preparation for the festival, including taking part in two pre-season tournaments, before facing Somerset College.

They dominated their opposition at the Parel Vallei Hockey Festival, recording wins over Reddam House Constantia, Hoërskool Hermanus, and Worcester Gimnasium. More recently, they dismantled Somerset College 4-0.

Despite those promising results, Gim is yet to be tested properly, and Grobler believes there’s a lot of room for improvement.

“School hockey has its ups and downs, and the one thing I want to ensure is that we can adapt to the situations presented before us,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

“For us to do that, it comes down to educating the players so they can make the correct decisions on the field.

“We had a successful season in 2024, but now the task is to maintain the excellence and standards we have set.”

Gim has retained a huge chunk of their senior players from last season. In total, 10 players who turned out for the side last year, including new captain Juan Swanepoel, will don the jersey in 2025.

Grobler said one of his priorities is to have his team keep their game as simple as possible. “Our main priority is to stay humble and maintain a good attitude,” he added.

“Just because we enjoyed success in previous years does not mean this year will necessarily be the same. By being humble and hard-working, we will find the solutions to the problems we’ll face together.”

After the Founders Festival, the boys from Paarl will be in action in the second week of April on their home turf against the Founders Festival hosts, Affies.

They’ll face Grey College later in the month before shifting their attention to the Hibbert Shield and Western Cape matches.

Coach Grobler, who has years of experience coaching schoolboy hockey, is aware of the rapidly rising competition around the country.

“Look, the competition in the Cape and around the country is so tough,” he said. “Teams are analysing you and making plans on how to negate your strengths.

“The best thing for us to do is to stick to our processes, to do the work in advance, and then, on game day, maintain composure and a belief in the plan.”

Paarl Gim will be challenged by Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal opposition that they don’t usually face at Founders, and that provides them with a chance to test themselves and get out of their comfort zone.

On day one, they’ll open their campaign against Parktown Boys’ High at 11:50 before taking on St Stithians College later in the day.

When asked what fans might expect from his team, Grobler said: “I think that the parents and Old Boys, as well as all supporters, have been spoilt with some really exciting hockey the past few seasons, and we will endeavour to do the same.

“At the moment we have not hit our stride, but when we do, I believe everyone will be thoroughly entertained,” he concluded.
